Course requirements

York's Music page lists the same Ontario courses for the BA and the BFA: the OSSD, ENG4U and five more 4U or 4M courses. Both use OUAC code YH. BC students need English 12 or English 12 First Peoples and four more Grade 12 academic subjects.

Since only English is named, pick your other five courses for strong marks. Map them in our course planner.

The average you need

York says applicants with averages in the low to mid 70s or higher may be considered for Music. To keep your offer, you need a final average of 70%. York says the average is set each year for each program, some programs have limited enrolment, and admission isn't guaranteed.

York doesn't publish an acceptance rate for music, and your audition counts too. Check your average with our Top 6 average calculator, and see our York acceptance rate page for school-wide data.

The questionnaire and audition

After you apply on OUAC, you get a York reference ID by email in about 5 to 10 business days. You use it to log in to the AMPD supplementary application portal. First you fill in a short questionnaire about your background, goals and why you want the program. If you're drawn to composition, music education or ethnomusicology, say so there.

Then you choose an audition area: Classical, Jazz, World Music or Digital/Electronic Music. York says your choice doesn't limit what you study later. The audition takes 15 to 20 minutes. You play two contrasting pieces and talk about your musical knowledge and goals. You may be asked to name intervals, scales and chord types, sing pitches, and sight-read.

York's pages don't state a rule on outside help. The questionnaire should still be in your own words, and the playing must be yours. AMPD's portal says the system opens to Fall 2027 applicants by the last week of October.

Dates for Fall 2027

York's deadline page lists January 15, 2027 for Ontario high school students and March 24, 2027 for out-of-province and international students. The AMPD supplementary deadline for Music is February 5, 2027 for every applicant group.

York calls these dates for guaranteed consideration. It keeps reviewing applications until the program is full. York doesn't post audition dates on its public pages. You book your slot in the portal. Music also has Winter and Summer entry. For January 2027 entry to the BFA in Music, the supplementary deadline was November 9, 2026. Compare dates on our Ontario deadlines page.

What you study

Everyone takes a shared core in the first two years. Workshop in Musicianship I and II covers singing, composing, playing, listening and harmony. Musics and Cultures I and II looks at how music ties to identity, class and politics. You add electives on top.

Later you can focus on jazz and gospel, Western classical performance, world music, contemporary improvisation, composition, digital and electronic music, Black music studies, music cultures, or music education. Jazz and gospel students take private lessons, jazz theory and ensembles from Year 1. Sample courses include Master Class in Performance and Composing for Film.

BA or BFA

York offers Music as a BFA or a BA, both four years, under the same OUAC code. AMPD says students can take music studies courses inside the BFA, or move to a four-year Honours BA to focus more on musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies and music writing.

If you plan to teach, the Concurrent Bachelor of Education lets you start an education degree alongside your BA or BFA as early as first year. York admits to it based on grades, oral communication, experience and personal qualities suited to teaching. Music education courses also include classroom placements. Compare it with our York Concurrent Education page.

Co-op and placements

York's co-op page lists the faculties with paid co-op. AMPD Music isn't on that list. The Music program page lists practicum and project-based learning instead.

AMPD's experiential education page mentions co-op and internship opportunities, then lists program-based placements and internships, with a coordinator who helps you find them. Ask AMPD what's open to music students before you count on paid work terms.

Tuition for 2026-27

York lists approximate 2026-2027 tuition for most Arts and Sciences programs at $6,200 a year for domestic students and $40,000 for international students. That's based on 30 credits, or five courses a term. York says domestic tuition rose 2% from 2025/2026.

York doesn't publish a separate music figure on this page. It says actual fees are on its Course and Program Fees page. Under the OUAC steps, AMPD lists fees of $156, non-refundable.

York's Automatic Entrance Scholarship starts at an 80% admission average. The tiers are $1,000 at 80% to 84.9%, $1,500 at 85% to 89.9%, $2,000 at 90% to 94.9%, and $3,500 at 95% and up. York says the scholarship is renewable if you keep an 8.0 grade point average over at least 24 credits.

York also lists larger entrance awards, such as the President's Scholarships at $8,400 a year for four years. See our scholarship finder for more.

How York compares

York's published range, low to mid 70s, is lower than many Ontario music schools. York also covers jazz, gospel, world and digital music from first year. If you play classical repertoire and want a conservatory feel, compare U of T Music and Western Music.
