York Residence: Keele vs Glendon

Traditional Keele rooms use a required dining plan. Suite rooms make dining optional and include cooking equipment, but the equipment varies by building.

Bethune suites list a fridge/freezer, stove and microwave. Calumet suites list a fridge, freezer, toaster oven, microwave and hotplate. Pond suites list a fridge/freezer and stove; residents provide their own microwave. In every suite, students supply small appliances, cookware, utensils and cleaning supplies.

Pond is primarily prioritized for upper-year students. York's 2026–27 page says first-year students cannot list Pond as a preference unless Housing approves an accommodation-based exception.

At Glendon, traditional single and double rooms share community bathrooms. York describes these as lockable single-person toilet and shower spaces with shared sinks. Hybrid clusters contain two to four bedrooms and a semi-private bathroom accessible only to cluster residents.

York's Glendon pages use overlapping hybrid and semi-private labels. The profile describes a semi-private room as a single bedroom sharing an en-suite bathroom with one suite-mate, while its hybrid overview describes clusters of two to four bedrooms. The 2026–27 rate table separately names a Hilliard hybrid single with private bath and a Wood hybrid single without that label. Confirm the number of bedrooms and bathroom users shown in the specific offer.

York's kitchen and dining guidance also conflicts. The profile overview says hybrid rooms lack kitchen access and require dining. Its semi-private detail mentions a shared kitchen and a required dining plan. Hilliard offers paid limited kitchen access, while the 2026–27 table marks Wood hybrid dining as optional. Confirm the exact building, room, kitchen fee and dining requirement before relying on self-catering.

York's 2025–26 Keele application handbook associates communal washrooms with Bethune, Founders, Stong and Vanier, and shared single-occupancy washrooms with Calumet, Pond, Tatham Hall, Vanier and Winters. Because Vanier appears in both lists, confirm the bathroom layout attached to the offered room.

Both Glendon buildings offer traditional and hybrid rooms. The current rate inventory shows broadly overlapping room types, so the building name alone is less useful than the room and bathroom arrangement in the offer.

Accessibility creates a clear difference. York says Hilliard is fully accessible and has an elevator, while Wood has partial accessibility and no elevator. York lists Hilliard among the residences with accessible units, but features and placement depend on assessed needs and availability. Students must complete the Student Accessibility Services and Housing & Residence Life approval process rather than relying on a building preference.

Glendon's current residence profile says most rooms are singles. Double rooms are limited, while semi-private rooms are typically assigned to returning students. First-year applicants should therefore keep a traditional room outcome in their plan even when requesting something else.

York lets applicants state residence or building preferences but does not guarantee them. At Keele, an offer is for a space and accepted students later choose among available rooms through Room Selection. Glendon's prospective page says applicants may list up to two residence preferences.
