This primary matrix is intentionally limited to campuses inside municipal Toronto. Each row is a research starting point. Confirm the exact offered program and applicant instructions before acting.

Define Toronto before comparing universities
This comparison uses municipal Toronto as the primary scope. The three choices are U of T at St. George, Toronto Metropolitan University downtown, and York University's Keele campus. They share a city label but differ in campus form, transit patterns, housing markets, and Engineering entry structures.
York's Markham campus and Ontario Tech's North Oshawa campus are useful Greater Toronto Area alternatives, but neither is inside Toronto. Keeping city and GTA labels separate prevents a location search from turning into an arbitrary provincial list.
Check accreditation by program and cohort
The Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board accredits undergraduate programs, not an institution in the abstract. Search the exact program title and the graduation year expected for the entering cohort. A result for one discipline cannot be applied to every degree at the same university.
Architecture, Architectural Science, and Computer Science can be valuable degrees, but they are outside this Engineering-program comparison. Do not attach a CEAB claim to one of those routes unless the official database lists that exact credential and cohort.
Compare declared and flexible entry models
U of T's September 2027 choices are eight declared Core programs and Engineering Science. TrackOne is paused for 2027 and 2028. TMU lists named BEng programs plus an undeclared first-semester option. York Keele lists Engineering with seven current specializations.
Those structures are not interchangeable. Ask when the discipline becomes fixed, whether a later change depends on grades or capacity, which credits carry forward, and whether moving programs adds an academic term or year.
Read ranges as planning evidence
U of T publishes two current consideration bands across its nine 2027 starts. York lists a low-80s Engineering range and 70% prerequisite minimums. TMU establishes 70% top-six eligibility and encourages applicants with 80% or higher because demand exceeds spaces.
The definitions differ, so the numbers should not be sorted into an acceptance ranking. A minimum, prior competitive range, and faculty planning band answer different questions. None is an offer guarantee or an individual probability.
Separate supplements and application timing
U of T requires an Engineering Supplemental Application, two-to-four ranked preferences, and a current $43.86 Ontario assessment fee. Its public pages conflict on the exact timed-response format, so the Engineering Applicant Portal controls. U of T also publishes early and regular checkpoints.
TMU and York's standard Engineering pages describe academic selection without a general interview or portfolio. That does not permit applicants to ignore their portals. Special consideration, documents, language evidence, awards, and applicant-category dates can add separate work.
Compare work-experience structures honestly
U of T's optional PEY Co-op can combine a shorter summer term and a longer 12-to-16-month term. TMU's Chemical Engineering route has mandatory co-op, while eight other Engineering disciplines use a later optional co-op or internship application. York lists co-op as available for the Keele BEng.
Access to a portal or academic program does not secure employment. Compare when students apply, academic eligibility, fees, job-search responsibility, self-found job approval, international work authorization, relocation, and what happens after an unsuccessful search.
Audit curriculum, laboratories, and design
Open the academic calendar and course map for the exact discipline. Count required design courses, laboratories, programming, mathematics, science, capstone work, and technical electives. Then check which electives actually ran and which facilities students in that program can use.
A downtown brand name cannot reveal classroom scale, department culture, team access, research availability, or teaching sequence. Compare the evidence attached to the program, not a generic campus tour or university-level research headline.
Model commute, housing, and total cost
A commuting applicant should test the door-to-door trip at realistic class times. U of T St. George and TMU are downtown but use different building clusters. York Keele sits on Line 1 farther northwest. Transfers, late laboratories, winter reliability, and missed connections matter.
Add tuition, mandatory program and co-op fees, books, transit, food, residence or rent, deposits, insurance, and travel. Then model the housing effect of a longer work term. Published co-op earnings are not guaranteed income and should not erase an affordable backup plan.
Build a fit score without inventing a league table
Score the exact discipline and curriculum, entry certainty, work model, net cost, commute, housing, learning environment, and support on the same scale. Weight the categories before comparing offers. Keep the source URL and evidence date beside every score.
A fit matrix can show why one option works better for one applicant. It does not create a universal order. Recalculate after receiving the actual program offer, scholarship, residence result, fee assessment, and conditions.
