Course requirements from Ontario

For the BA, York asks for English (ENG4U) and five more 4U or 4M courses. There is no math or science requirement for the BA. That makes it one of the most open routes into a psychology degree in Ontario.

For the BSc, York asks for ENG4U, a 4U math, one of Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) or Physics (SPH4U), and three more 4U or 4M courses. York's page says a 4U math, so it does not name one course. Confirm with York which 4U math courses count before you set your timetable.

Plan your Grade 12 timetable with our course planner. If you want to keep both doors open, take one 4U math and one 4U science so you can apply to the BSc as well as the BA.

The mid 70s average

York's program page says it considers applicants with an average in the mid 70s or higher for both the BA and the BSc. It also says you need a final academic average of 72% to keep your offer. That means a conditional offer can be cancelled if your final marks fall below 72%.

BA or BSc: which to pick

Both degrees sit in the Faculty of Health and use the same psychology courses. York calls its program the largest and most diverse selection of psychology courses in Canada. Topics include child development, social behaviour, memory and neuroscience.

The BSc asks for math and science in high school and suits students who like labs, the brain and statistics. The BA leaves more room for electives in the arts and social sciences. Pick the BSc if you think you might apply to medicine or other health programs later and want science courses on your record. Pick the BA if your strengths are in English, history or the social sciences.

York cites a top 5 in Canada and top 75 in the world ranking for psychology from the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. You can study full time or part time, and York lists Fall, Winter and Summer entry.

No supplementary application

York does not list a supplementary application for Psychology. Its supplementary deadlines cover programs like the Schulich BBA, Nursing, Social Work, Concurrent Education and the arts programs in AMPD. Psychology is not on that list, so your grades decide your offer.

After you apply, York sends an email that tells you how to upload any required documents through MyFile. Watch your inbox so you do not miss a request.

Faculty of Health co-op

Co-op is optional and paid. You do not apply to it from high school. To be eligible, you need at least 30 credits, the prerequisite course HH/COOP 2999, and at least 18 credits left in your degree. You need a GPA of 4.00 on York's 9.0 scale and 45 earned credits before your first work term.

Work terms last at least two terms, or eight months. Students in a 120 credit honours program can do 8 to 12 months. The prerequisite course has limited spaces on a first come, first served basis. Fees on 2026-27 rates are a one time $200 registration fee and $500 for each work term course. York says co-op positions are competitive and not guaranteed.

Research in first year

York's psychology department runs an Undergraduate Research Participant Pool. In HH/PSYC 1010, the first-year course, students can earn up to 4% of their final grade by taking part in research studies. In HH/PSYC 2030 they can earn up to 2%.

The program page also lists research labs, course based labs and community projects as applied learning options. Taking part early shows you how psychology research works and can help you find a lab for later research work.

Careers after a psychology degree

York lists counsellor, psychotherapist, psychologist, medical doctor, child and youth worker, policy advisor, human resources manager, marketing manager and teacher as possible paths. York notes that some of these need more training after your degree.
