How the concurrent BEd works

York's concurrent program lets you earn two degrees at the same time and become a qualified teacher in Ontario. You apply from high school to a York undergraduate program that is paired with the BEd. York says you finish your undergraduate degree first and then move into the Bachelor of Education.

The BEd is full time and runs during the day, Monday to Friday. York says you must be ready to be in class or in a practicum for the full day. It does not list the total number of years on its concurrent page, so confirm the length with the Faculty of Education.

Course requirements

York does not set one list of courses for the concurrent BEd. You must meet the admission rules for the undergraduate degree you choose. For example, a Science pairing needs the Science prerequisites, and an Engineering pairing through Lassonde needs the Engineering prerequisites.

This means your Grade 12 plan should start with the subjects you want to teach. Check the York program page for the degree you want, then plan your courses with our course planner.

The average you need

York does not post a single admission average for the concurrent BEd. Its Faculty of Education says students are selected on academic achievement, inclusiveness, experience and personal traits that fit teaching. So grades matter, but they are not the only factor.

York does not publish an acceptance rate for the concurrent BEd. Work out where you stand with our Top 6 average calculator, and compare it with the average for the York program you pair with the BEd.

The supplementary form

Every concurrent applicant sends a supplementary information form through MyFile. It has an experience profile, an experience summary, a personal statement and references. York charges a $50 non-refundable processing fee.

York's pages do not agree on the number of references. The Future Students page lists one letter of recommendation. The Faculty of Education page asks for two online letters of recommendation. Plan for two, and confirm with York before you ask your referees.

Dates for Fall 2027

Ontario high school students should apply on OUAC by January 15, 2027. York's deadlines page lists February 19, 2027 for the Concurrent Education supplementary form. The Faculty of Education page lists March 19, 2027. The Future Students program page lists March 20, 2027 for the form and fee, and March 19 in its deadline list.

These dates conflict. Send the form by February 19, 2027 so you are safe either way, and confirm with York. Out of province and international students also complete a Direct Entry Concurrent Form by February 1, 2027. See our Ontario deadlines page.

Keele, Glendon and French

Most concurrent students take the BEd at the Keele campus. Glendon students who are preparing to teach French as a Second Language can join a cohort held at Glendon. Glendon students who plan to teach other subjects take the concurrent program at Keele.

The Glendon French option prepares you to teach in French immersion, Core and Extended French at all levels. It requires a concurrent Glendon BA.

Specializations

York offers three BEd options. French as a Second Language is taught through Glendon. International Education lets you show you are ready to teach in Ontario and abroad. Jewish Teacher Education prepares you to teach in public schools and Jewish day schools at all grade levels, together with the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies.

These options are added to the BEd. They do not change the OUAC code you apply to. Ask about them once you are in the program.

Placements and co-op

York says BEd school placements can only be done with partner school boards in the Greater Toronto Area. Plan for travel across the GTA during practicum blocks.

York's Future Students page lists co-op among general hands-on options at York, but the concurrent BEd page describes practicum, not a co-op stream. Treat practicum as the hands-on part of the BEd.

BA Educational Studies is a different degree

York's BA in Educational Studies is a four year, 120 credit degree. It does not lead to teacher certification on its own. Graduates work in fields like policy, training, libraries and health education.

You can pair this BA with the concurrent BEd using code YEW. If you want to teach in a school, make sure you apply to the concurrent pairing and send the supplementary form.

Tuition for 2026-27

York lists domestic tuition of about $6,200 a year for most programs in 2026-27, based on 30 credits. It notes a 2% increase from 2025-26. York's page does not give a separate figure for the Faculty of Education.

Your fees depend on the faculty of your paired degree in each year. Add the $50 supplementary fee, books and housing to your budget.

How to apply step by step

Apply on OUAC. York emails you a student number so you can sign in to MyFile. Upload your documents and the supplementary form in MyFile, and pay the fee there.

York warns that late or incomplete applications, including supplementary forms, may mean a program becomes full. Start your personal statement in the fall so you have time to ask referees.
