BA or BSc

York offers Computer Science as a BA, a BSc or international versions of each (iBA and iBSc), all through the Lassonde School of Engineering. York says you can round out the BA with liberal arts courses, the BSc with science courses, or add language learning and study abroad with the international degrees.

The BSc needs one extra Grade 12 science, chemistry or physics. Otherwise the BA and BSc have the same courses, range and conditions. Pick the degree that fits the electives you want.

Course requirements

York needs an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. For every Computer Science degree you need ENG4U (English), MHF4U (Advanced Functions) and a second 4U math, either MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors) or MDM4U (Data Management). The BSc also needs SCH4U (Chemistry) or SPH4U (Physics).

No high school computer science course is required. Plan Grade 11 and 12 with our course planner.

The low 80s range and your offer conditions

York says applicants with averages in the low 80s or higher may be considered. That's the range to be looked at, not a promise of an offer. York sets the average each year.

Your offer comes with conditions. You need a final average of 78% across the required courses, a math average of at least 75% and no math prerequisite below 65%. If your grades slip, York asks you to email the Lassonde admissions team early.

York doesn't publish a Computer Science acceptance rate. See our York acceptance rate page for what it does publish, and work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

Applying from another province or the IB

Students in British Columbia and Alberta face the same low 80s range and 78% condition. For the BA you need your province's Grade 12 English and two senior math courses, plus two more academic courses. For the BSc you swap one of those for chemistry or physics.

IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma students need at least 30 points, both to be considered and to keep the offer. Out-of-province and international high school students apply by March 24, 2027.

What you study

York says you build foundations in programming, algorithms, data structures and systems through labs, team projects and supervised work. Hands-on learning starts early with project-based courses.

In upper years you can take faculty-supervised project courses on problems you help define. Paid summer research is open through NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards.

York lists career paths such as software and network developer, data scientist, cloud computing specialist, AI and machine learning developer, and human-computer interface designer.

York lists related programs you could apply to as well, including Computer Science for Software Development, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering and Computer Engineering. For engineering routes, see our York Lassonde Engineering page.

Dates and winter entry

Ontario high school students apply through OUAC by January 15, 2027 for a September start. York's page lists no supplementary application for Computer Science.

You can also start in January. The deadline for a Winter 2027 start is November 18, 2026. Out-of-province and international high school students have until March 24, 2027 for a fall start.

Co-op after second year

Lassonde co-op opens after second year, and you apply in year two. Placements are 4, 8 or 12 months, and past employers include Caseware, CIBC, IBM and SOTI.

Lassonde also runs an entrepreneurial co-op stream through its BEST program, where you build a business with a mentor during a work term.

For the co-op designation you complete two work periods separated by a study term, totalling 12 to 20 months. You need a CGPA of at least 5.0 and must return to full-time study after each work period. Lassonde charges a one-time $200 registration fee and $500 for each four-month work term.

Tuition and scholarships

York estimates 2026-27 Computer Science tuition at about $8,800 for domestic students and $38,000 for international students, for a full course load. York says domestic fees rose 2% from 2025-26. Supplementary fees and residence are extra.

York's Automatic Entrance Scholarship needs no application. Based on your final admission average, it pays $1,000 at 80% to 84.9%, $1,500 at 85% to 89.9%, $2,000 at 90% to 94.9% and $3,500 at 95% or more. It's renewable with an 8.0 GPA, worth $4,000 to $14,000 in total. York says it awards over $20 million in entrance scholarships and awards a year, and some, such as the President's Scholarships ($8,400 a year for four years), need no application.

For living costs, York estimates $9,000 to $13,000 for an eight-month residence room and $4,350 to $8,000 for a meal plan.

Science and technology students can also be nominated for a $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship, with school nominations due January 27, 2027. Check your average on our Top 6 average calculator.

For parents

York's Computer Science range starts in the low 80s, so it's within reach for many students. The conditions matter, though: a 75% math average with no math course under 65%.

Because the automatic scholarship starts at 80%, a student admitted with an 80% final average also qualifies for at least $1,000. Compare York with other schools on our computer science admission requirements page.
