Direct entry, four years

USask says you can enter the BEd directly from high school. The degree is 120 credit units: 60 in years one and two, 27 in year three, 3 in the spring after year three, and 30 in year four.

You choose a level. Early/Middle Years prepares you to teach Prekindergarten to Grade 8. Secondary prepares you for Grades 9 to 12. Either way, you pick two teaching areas. After graduation and a Saskatchewan teaching certificate, USask says you can teach any grade from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Course requirements

USask asks for one prerequisite from each of four areas: natural science, social science, math, and a second language or fine or performing art. You can be short in two of these. If admitted, you must clear them before second year.

Your average is worked out from five Grade 12 marks: one English, one math and three other approved subjects. For Ontario, the English can be ENG4U, and the math can be MDM4U, MHF4U or MCV4U. So plan on English and a math even though English is not listed as a prerequisite area. Use our course planner to check your Grade 12 mix.

The two USask pages word the Saskatchewan social science list slightly differently. The admissions tool adds Indigenous Studies 30. Confirm with USask if that is your only social science course.

The average you need

USask's 2027-28 rules set a 70% minimum on your five subject average. The admissions page calls 70% the expected target average for regular admission. That target is based on 2026-27 results and could be higher or lower for 2027-28. Admission is competitive, and applicants are ranked from the top down by average.

Early admission is different. If you apply by the early deadline with 75% or more, you are eligible for early admission. USask does not publish an acceptance rate. Work out your marks with our Top 6 average calculator, then use USask's five mark formula.

How USask uses your Grade 11 and 12 marks

If you apply early in Grade 12, USask may use Grade 11 marks to predict Grade 12 results when it cannot find enough Grade 12 marks. Your offer will then say you must keep a minimum average in your final Grade 12 marks.

USask rechecks your average on final marks to confirm you met that condition. It does not recalculate for a new decision. Keep your marks steady through the spring.

Optional statement, not an essay

Regular admission is 100% academic average. There is no required essay or interview. You may add an optional statement about special circumstances that affected your marks. You can also declare an equity category if you choose.

If you send an optional statement and might not otherwise be admitted, USask may ask for two references who can speak to your knowledge, skills and disposition. Write any statement yourself and keep it honest and short. Mature applicants who don't meet regular rules apply with a written request and a summary of work and life experience.

What the four years look like

Years one and two mix Education Learning Communities, education courses and your teaching areas. USask's sample Secondary first year with biology and chemistry includes Introduction to Education, literature and composition, general chemistry and Introduction to Canadian Indigenous Studies.

Secondary students complete 24 credit units in Teaching Area 1 and 15 in Teaching Area 2. Other required courses include EFDT 301, on educator identity, and EDST 321, a field experience course with weekly school visits.

Practicum, not co-op

The BEd has school practicums, not co-op. Early on you get pre-practicum field experiences in schools. In your final year you complete a 16 week extended practicum, EXPR 422, with a collaborating teacher, working up to a full teaching load.

USask also offers a practicum abroad in final year. Students who choose it complete a local practicum plus a six week practicum in another country.

Tuition for 2026-27

USask's own first year estimate for 2026-27 is $8,090 in tuition for Canadian students taking a full course load. Student fees add $1,331.66 and books about $1,500, for $10,921.66. International tuition is estimated at $39,156.

USask suggests budgeting $1,500 to $2,500 a year for books and supplies. Housing and food are extra. USask also notes a federal loan forgiveness program for teachers who work in rural areas and smaller centres.

Scholarships

USask gives 600 Entrance Scholarships of $5,000 a year to high achieving students in direct entry programs, including Education. You are considered automatically based on your admission average if you apply and send documents by December 1.

For larger awards, such as Best and Brightest scholarships worth up to $40,000 over four years, you also submit a separate scholarship application by December 15.

How it compares at USask

The BEd is one of several teacher education routes at USask. If you want to teach physical education in high school, the five year Kinesiology and Education combined program fits better. The Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP) and the Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program (SUNTEP) are separate routes with their own entry rules.

Compare our USask kinesiology page if you are weighing the combined program.

For parents

The 70% target is reachable for many students, but it is a ranking, not a promise. A 75% average and a December application give your child early admission and scholarship consideration at once.

Read our USask guide for campus and residence details. USask's catalogue lists the full 120 credit unit plan for each level, so you can see every required course before you apply.
