How concurrent education works at Lakehead
Lakehead says concurrent education lets you start your teaching career faster and earn two degrees at the same time. You study the program of your choice while also taking classes in the Faculty of Education. Then you spend two years only in the Faculty of Education so you can qualify for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers.
Your first education course is Introduction to Education. It looks at the theory and practice of teaching, how Ontario's public schools work and current issues in education. Your other first year courses depend on your partner subject.

Course requirements
Lakehead's general rules ask for the OSSD and six Grade 12 U or M courses, including the prerequisites for your program. Arts and Education pairings need ENG4U. Science and Education pairings need ENG4U, Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and two of Biology, Calculus and Vectors, Chemistry, Data Management, Earth and Space Science or Physics.
Lakehead lists the exact courses for each subject in a drop down tool on its program page. Check the one for your planned major, then build your timetable with our course planner.

The average you need
The minimum is a 70% overall average, worked out from your top six Grade 12 U or M courses. Lakehead says higher averages may be needed when there are more qualified applicants than spaces. It does not publish a competitive average or an acceptance rate for concurrent education.
Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a spot. Work out your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

Supplementary application
Lakehead's concurrent education page lists no supplementary form, essay or interview for high school students. You apply through OUAC and your marks decide the file.
Do not mix this up with the Bachelor of Education deadline of November 2, 2026. That date is for the consecutive BEd, which is for people who already have a degree.

Dates for Fall 2027
Ontario high school students should apply on OUAC by January 15, 2027. Lakehead makes decisions in rounds: an early round in December using Grade 11 marks, then March, May and a final round in July.
Applying early helps you reach the first rounds, which also matters for scholarships. See our Ontario deadlines page for other schools.

Teaching divisions and subjects
Primary Junior covers kindergarten to Grade 6 and is offered at Thunder Bay and Orillia. Intermediate Senior covers Grades 7 to 12. You pick two teaching subjects.
At Orillia, the Intermediate Senior subjects are English and History. Thunder Bay offers more: English, Environmental Studies, French as a Second Language, Geography, History, Math, Music, Indigenous Language, First Nations, Métis and Inuit Studies, Health and Physical Education, Science and Visual Arts, plus Social Sciences as a second subject only.

Accelerated five year option
Lakehead offers an accelerated route in English, History and Kinesiology. You complete a four year degree and the two year education degree in five years.
If you want to finish sooner, look at these subjects first. Ask Lakehead how the accelerated timetable fits with your teaching subjects.

Placements and co-op
Lakehead lists 105 days of student teaching placement over two years. Placements in China, the United Kingdom or remote Indigenous communities are possible. In the Primary Junior division, the PPOD stream places you off campus one day a week.
Concurrent education is not a co-op program. The practicum is the hands-on part of the degree.

Program length and provincial changes
Lakehead's concurrent and consecutive pages both describe two years of education study and 105 placement days. Ontario has announced changes to teacher education that some schools are using to shorten their programs.
Lakehead's pages do not yet mention any change. Since you would reach the education years around 2030, ask Lakehead to confirm the length before you accept an offer.

Applying from outside Ontario or as a transfer
Lakehead lists matching courses for every province. For Arts and Education, that is the Grade 12 English course in your province, such as English Language Arts 30-1 in Alberta or English 12 in Nova Scotia. Science pairings add Pre-Calculus and two math or science courses. The 70% minimum still applies.
College transfer students need at least one year of full time study and a 70% average. University transfer students need a 60% average and the program prerequisites. If you are missing a prerequisite, Lakehead suggests booking a meeting with an admissions officer to plan how to complete it.

Class sizes and faculty focus
Lakehead says its education class sizes are small, so you can get to know your professors. Electives include religious education and drama, with extra focus on children's rights, systemic violence and teacher mentoring.
Faculty research areas include early literacy and numeracy, math and science education, environmental education and Indigenous education. Thunder Bay also has Indigenous Education programs for students who want to work with Indigenous youth.

For parents
Lakehead posts a 70% minimum, but it can rise when demand is high. The campus choice matters, because Orillia offers fewer Intermediate Senior subjects than Thunder Bay.
