What Concurrent Education is

Concurrent Education, often called ConEd, is how Queen's trains teachers who start right after high school. You study for an honours degree and a Bachelor of Education at the same time. You graduate with both degrees and can apply to the Ontario College of Teachers.

Queen's says the program is being shortened to five years to match changes to teacher education announced by Ontario's Ministry of Education. It says students applying in Fall 2026 apply to this shorter program. That means students applying now, for Fall 2027 entry, should expect the five year version too.

Course requirements by program

Every Queen's applicant needs the OSSD and six 4U or 4M courses, including ENG4U. For ConEd Arts (QB), Arts French (QBF) and Music (QMM), the other five courses can be any 4U or 4M courses.

ConEd Science (QF) needs ENG4U, Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) and two of Biology, Chemistry or Physics at the 4U level. ConEd Kinesiology (QKF) needs ENG4U, MCV4U and SBI4U. If you are not sure which code fits your courses, check with our course planner.

The average you need

Queen's posts the minimum average that was needed to be considered for last September. For ConEd, that was the high 80s for Arts (QB), the low 80s for Science (QF) and Music (QMM), and the low 90s for Kinesiology (QKF). Arts French (QBF) is not listed on its own.

Queen's warns that these averages change each year and could be higher than what it posts. It does not publish an acceptance rate for ConEd. Work out your own number with our Top 6 average calculator, then aim above the posted range.

Supplementary application and auditions

Queen's says high school applicants to Concurrent Education do not need a supplementary application. The written supplement is for Consecutive Education, which is for people who already hold a degree. So your grades in the required courses decide your file.

Music is the exception. ConEd Music (QMM) applicants need a personal audition and an interview, the same as other Queen's music applicants. Book this early in the cycle so it does not clash with exams.

Dates for Fall 2027

Queen's opened applications for Fall 2027 on October 1, 2026. Concurrent Education uses the general deadline of March 1, 2027 to apply on OUAC. All documents and transcripts are due by March 31, 2027.

If you want to be considered for a Major Admission Award, Queen's recommends applying on OUAC by November 20, 2026. The award application itself closes December 8, 2026. For other schools' dates, see our Ontario deadlines page.

Teaching divisions and subjects

You choose a teaching division. Primary Junior covers kindergarten to Grade 6. Intermediate Senior covers Grades 7 to 12, and you pick two teaching subjects.

Queen's lists these Intermediate Senior subjects: Dramatic Arts, English, First Nations, Métis and Inuit Studies, French as a Second Language, Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Mathematics, Music, Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics), Social Sciences and Visual Arts. Your honours degree courses should match the subjects you plan to teach.

Placements and practicum

In years one and two you arrange your own community placements. In year three you complete a four week classroom practicum. In year five you complete a 13 week practicum in Ontario schools plus a two week alternative practicum, which can be anywhere in the world.

Queen's places teacher candidates with 28 publicly funded school boards across southern Ontario. The program has no co-op stream. Practicum time is the hands-on part of the degree.

How the five years are laid out

Years one to three run from September to May. You take education courses alongside your Arts, Science, Kinesiology or Music courses. Year four runs from September to April and is when you choose a track or concentration.

Year five runs from September to April in a block format. You move between blocks on campus and blocks in schools. The full degree rules are in the Queen's academic calendar.

Choosing the right OUAC code

Pick the code that matches the subjects you want to teach. If you hope to teach math or science in high school, ConEd Science (QF) builds those subjects into your honours degree. If you want to teach English, history or geography, ConEd Arts (QB) fits better. ConEd Arts French (QBF) suits students who plan to teach French.

ConEd Kinesiology (QKF) pairs well with Health and Physical Education, but it has the highest past average. ConEd Music (QMM) is for strong musicians who can pass an audition. Each code has its own course rules, so check them against your Grade 12 timetable before you apply. You can list more than one Queen's code on OUAC if your courses allow it.

How Queen's reviews your file

Queen's selects ConEd students on academic standing and the required courses for the code you chose. The undergraduate admission office handles your file, not the Faculty of Education. Queen's says it receives Ontario high school grades from OUAC by April 30, 2027, so your Grade 12 marks matter.

Because there is no written supplement, the best way to make your file stronger is to raise your marks in the required courses. Time spent volunteering with children still helps you later. Years one and two need community placements, and you arrange those yourself.

Tuition for 2026-27

Queen's lists 2026-27 domestic Education tuition at $199.91 per unit. For 30 units that is $5,997.30. With the student activity levy and ancillary fees, Queen's shows a total of $7,709.79 for the year. It notes an extra $30 in ancillary fees for ConEd students.

Arts and Science tuition for 2026-27 is $206.82 per unit, or $6,204.60 for 30 units, and $7,771.11 with fees. Kinesiology adds a $27 society fee. Which fee you pay in a year depends on the courses you take. Residence and books are extra.

For parents

ConEd is a long commitment, but it is now five years, not six. Your child earns two degrees and can apply to teach in Ontario at the end.

The Kinesiology version is the hardest to get into, with past averages in the low 90s. A safer plan is to apply to more than one ConEd code or school. See the Queen's admissions overview for more about the university.
