Course requirements

uOttawa needs an Ontario high school diploma with at least six 4U, 4M or DU courses. For Computer Science, three are set: ENG4U or FRA4U, MHF4U (Advanced Functions) and MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors). You need a combined average of at least 70% in the two math courses.

No science or computer science course is required. Grade 12 co-op and work experience courses don't count toward admission. Plan your Grade 11 and 12 courses with our course planner.

A 90% minimum with limited enrolment

uOttawa publishes a minimum admission average, not a range. For Computer Science it's 90% for Fall 2027, higher than every uOttawa engineering program, including Software Engineering at 87%.

The program is marked limited enrolment, and uOttawa says meeting the minimum doesn't guarantee admission. It doesn't publish an acceptance rate. Work out your own average with our Top 6 average calculator.

Applying from outside Ontario

Students from other provinces face the same 90% minimum with fewer set courses. In British Columbia you need English 12 or Français 12 and Calculus 12. In Alberta you need English 30 or Français 30 and Mathematics 31. Either way, the math course needs at least 70%.

Quebec Secondary V students have an 84% minimum instead, but their Sec. V math must also be at least 84%. uOttawa may ask them to take up to two math make-up courses, the summer before or during first year.

In English, in French or both

uOttawa offers Computer Science in English and in French, and all compulsory courses are taught in both. The French Immersion Stream is open to students in this program. French-language programs have their own requirements page.

Options include an Honours BSc with Specialization, with Management and Entrepreneurship or Data Science options, a Joint Honours with Mathematics and a Major. An accelerated stream lets you finish the Honours BSc and a Master of Computer Science within five years.

Students in other programs can add a Minor in Computer Science or a Minor in Computer Science for Scientists. These are only taken as a second discipline, with registration starting in second year.

What you study

The Honours BSc with Specialization is 120 units. uOttawa's calendar starts you with two introduction to computing courses, digital systems, technical report writing, Calculus I and II, linear algebra and discrete math for computing.

Later core courses include data structures and algorithms, programming paradigms, databases, computer architecture, operating systems, networking, formal languages and algorithm design, plus an introduction to software engineering. You finish with an honours project.

You also take 27 units of courses outside computing and math. uOttawa suggests business or science and humanities or social sciences, or a minor where you'd apply computing, such as Information Management Systems.

Computer Science, Software or Computer Engineering

Computer Science sits in uOttawa's Faculty of Engineering, in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. uOttawa says it covers programming, algorithms, AI and machine learning, cybersecurity and parallel computing.

It's accredited by CIPS but doesn't lead to a P.Eng. licence on its own. Software and Computer Engineering do. Software Engineering's minimum is 87% and its co-op is mandatory. Compare them on our uOttawa Engineering page.

Co-op

Co-op is optional in Computer Science. You can apply when you apply to uOttawa if your admission average is at least 80%, then you normally need an 80% average in first year to keep your spot. You can also apply after starting, with a 75% average, by September 30 for most programs.

Work terms are four, eight or twelve months, set by your program's sequence. uOttawa says roughly 1,000 students are accepted to co-op each year. Optional co-op costs $896 for each work term you're matched to a job in 2026-27.

Tuition and scholarships

uOttawa lists 2026-27 Computer Science tuition for Ontario students at $4,210.55 a term for the first 33 units, full time. International students pay $31,582.15 a term. These are tuition only, and 2027-28 rates aren't posted yet.

The uOttawa Admission Scholarship for 2027-28 is automatic for eligible Canadian students in direct-entry programs: $2,000 for an admission average of 90% to 94.9% and $3,000 for 95% or more. Estimate yours on our Top 6 average calculator.

For parents

uOttawa's Computer Science bar is high and published. If your child is close to 90%, Software or Computer Engineering at 87% or 85% is worth a look, with different prerequisites.

One upside of the high bar: a Canadian student admitted with a 90% admission average also meets the average for the $2,000 automatic scholarship. The Joint Honours with Mathematics and the Data Science program carry the same 90% minimum, so they aren't easier routes in.
