which Ottawa university fits your degree plan?

Choose uOttawa or Carleton by comparing the same degree, its work route and any language option you want. uOttawa Computer Science offers a French Immersion Stream; Carleton's BCS offers streams after first year. For Fall 2027, January 15 is Carleton's Ontario application deadline and uOttawa's recommended date. Later program closing dates are separate.

Make the program comparison before the city comparison

Both universities are in Ottawa, but a city label says little about what you will study. Start with the full degree title and its required courses. Here we use Computer Science as a matched example because both schools offer it. If you want business, journalism or engineering, use a new pair of course lists. Do not borrow the CS average from this table.

uOttawa's Honours BSc Computer Science belongs to its Faculty of Engineering. That faculty name does not change the degree into a Bachelor of Engineering. Carleton offers a Bachelor of Computer Science with Honours and Combined Honours choices described on its program page. Similar subject names can still lead to different degree structures, electives and later options.

List the kind of problems you want to work on, then find the courses that teach those skills. Check the required first-year sequence and a sample upper-year path. A preference for artificial intelligence or software work is more useful when tied to actual course access. Avoid choosing from an unsupported claim that one whole university is better for every student.

Read the exact label beside an admission number

The uOttawa result selected for Ontario school applicants and English Computer Science shows an 80% minimum admission average. Places are limited. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. Keep that minimum label. It is not the average of students who got in. It does not promise an offer or tell you your odds.

Carleton's official 2027 viewbook lists an 80% to 85% minimum cutoff range for BCS. Its current Ontario page says ranges apply to both the overall and prerequisite averages. We fetched the current public form and attempted its program selection, but the response stayed unselected. The fetched viewbook names Fall 2027 and supplies the range, so the figure does not depend on that incomplete selector response.

This matters if your average sits near the range. A minimum from one school and a prior-cycle range from another cannot rank your personal chances. Check the live selector or ask admissions before relying on a close result. Use the uOttawa CS guide and Carleton CS guide for the dedicated routes, then verify any figure against its source and date.

Compare required maths and the language subject

uOttawa's selected CS result requires English or French 4U, Advanced Functions and Calculus and Vectors. It states a minimum combined 70% in the required maths courses. Your admission set still includes the prerequisites. You cannot simply choose your six highest electives and leave a lower required maths mark out of the calculation.

Carleton's current CS calendar requires Advanced Functions and Calculus and Vectors. Its general Ontario page sets a 60% floor for each prerequisite and recommends Grade 12 English for all degrees. The full OSSD and six-course rules also apply. Do not confuse an individual course floor with the higher average that a limited-enrolment degree may need for selection.

For another degree, build the subject list again. Carleton Commerce or a design program does not inherit the BCS requirements. Likewise, uOttawa language, arts and health routes may use different subjects or extra material. Check a planned course change against both choices before dropping it. A broad school comparison cannot replace that course-by-course eligibility check.

Decide whether French immersion is part of your goal

uOttawa offers a named French Immersion Stream in eligible English-language degrees, including Computer Science. The program page says required CS courses are offered in English and French. The stream is designed for students who studied in a language other than French and developed French as a second language. You choose this stream. Not every student has to study in French.

The immersion application process asks you to choose an eligible English program and add the immersion option. After an offer that includes the stream, you must show advanced French skills. Use the stated test route or an accepted external result. That test decides entry to the stream. It does not affect your place in the base degree.

Ask yourself whether you want to learn your subject partly in French and what support you would need. Do not choose the stream solely from a broad claim about jobs in Ottawa. This comparison does not establish a matching Carleton immersion credential or a job advantage. Compare the actual language study available in each degree and your willingness to take those courses.

Check how co-op admission is kept after high school

At uOttawa, eligible high school applicants can request co-op when applying. The current rule uses an 80% high school minimum to reserve a place. You must then meet the university grade rules to enter. Most programs require an 8.0 average at the specified early stage. That is a separate question from receiving a basic degree offer, even when the high school minimum happens to use the same number.

Carleton's CS calendar permits direct co-op entry but warns that required averages can exceed the ordinary minimum. Its co-op office also describes later entry points and a mandatory preparation course after admission. Check the work-study sequence for your own program. The office also posts dates for current students entering in Winter 2027. Those are not the dates for a Grade 12 student starting the next fall.

At either school, compare the work months, course progression, fees and rules for staying eligible. A co-op place is not an employer offer. You still apply for work and meet the employer's conditions. Budget for the search and for possible relocation rather than assuming every posted role will be nearby or every summer will produce the same pay.

Look past a stream name to later course access

Carleton says its Computer Science specialty streams are available after first year. That lets you examine a common subject base before narrowing the focus. Read the stream requirements and when courses run. An attractive stream title does not tell you how much of the degree is optional or whether you would enjoy the required mathematical and theoretical work.

uOttawa describes options, minors and a major alongside its CS degree and links detailed course sequences. Check the sequence for the version you would enter, including co-op or immersion if selected. A later accelerated master's route has its own conditions. It should not be presented as an automatic feature of every first-year offer.

Use those structures to test flexibility. If you change your mind after first year, which courses would still count and which prerequisites would you need? Ask the academic unit about any essential transfer or option. Neither university name guarantees unrestricted movement into every other program. Choose an entry route you would still value if the later change did not happen.

Compare like-for-like charges and housing

Carleton's 2026-27 Ontario table lists $10,772.94 for first-year BCS at full-fee status over Fall and Winter. It includes compulsory miscellaneous fees and U-Pass. Calling that amount tuition alone would overstate the tuition component and obscure what is included. Co-op and other personal costs can be separate. Use the Carleton cost guide for the categories.

uOttawa's selected public fee form lists $4,210.55 tuition per term for Ontario full-time CS in the first thirty-three-unit bracket in 2026-27. Two such terms calculate to $8,421.10, before ancillary charges. Add the listed student charges before comparing full costs. Use the uOttawa cost guide for the other charges. Neither school's current schedule confirms Fall 2027 prices.

Your housing plans can differ in the same city. Compare the residence offer, meal plan and travel from where you would live. Keep an award separate until eligibility and payment timing are clear. The uOttawa hub and Carleton hub link residence and financial support, which belong in the same household budget as the academic charges.

Use January planning without hiding later closing dates

Carleton lists January 15, 2027 for Ontario secondary-school applications. Its later general closing date serves a different row of the calendar. uOttawa recommends applying before January 15, while its selected CS result lists June 1 application and June 15 document closing dates for Canadian applicants. Those are not the international CS dates, which are January 15 and February 15.

uOttawa warns that available space and applicant group affect closing. A late closing date is not a reason to wait. Apply while there is time to fix a problem. Its general page also advises early document completion. Keep the recommendation, the program closing date and your portal's missing-document tasks in separate calendar entries. A single date labelled deadline can conceal those differences.

Use the uOttawa deadline guide and Carleton deadline guide when comparing the offers. Then choose on the full academic route, language plan and workable cost. If the preferred offer does not arrive, your next choice should still lead to a degree you want. There is no official city-wide admission number that can replace this comparison.
