Course requirements

uOttawa needs an Ontario high school diploma with at least six 4U, 4M or DU courses. For most engineering programs, five are set: ENG4U or FRA4U, MHF4U (Advanced Functions), MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors), SCH4U (Chemistry) and SPH4U (Physics). You need a combined average of at least 70% in the math and science prerequisites.

Software Engineering is different. It needs ENG4U or FRA4U, MHF4U and MCV4U plus one of SBI4U, SCH4U, ICS4U or SPH4U, with at least 70% in each. Biomedical Mechanical Engineering adds SBI4U. Grade 12 co-op and work experience courses don't count. Summer, online and private school courses do count if a recognized school grants the high school credit. Applying from another province or Quebec

The minimum average is the same across Canada, but the courses change. For Mechanical Engineering, British Columbia students need English 12 or Français 12, Calculus 12, Chemistry 12 and Physics 12. Alberta students need English 30 or Français 30, Mathematics 31, Chemistry 30 and Physics 30.

Quebec Secondary V students face a stricter rule. uOttawa asks for a combined 84% in the math and science prerequisites, not 70%, and may require up to two math make-up courses at the University.

Minimum averages, not cut-offs

uOttawa lists a minimum admission average for each program, rather than a range of admitted students. For Fall 2027 it's 75% for Multidisciplinary Design, 80% for most programs, 84% for Mechanical, 85% for Computer and 87% for Software Engineering.

Computer and Software Engineering are marked limited enrolment. uOttawa says meeting a minimum doesn't guarantee admission because some programs are more competitive. It doesn't publish an engineering acceptance rate. Check your average on our Top 6 average calculator.

No supplement, and the dates

uOttawa Engineering has no supplementary application, interview or test. Your prerequisite courses and average decide your file.

Applications opened on September 17, 2026. The deadline is January 15, 2027, and documents are due February 15, 2027. Engineering programs admit students in the fall only.

These requirements are for programs taught in English. uOttawa publishes French-language program requirements on a separate page.

Software, Computer Engineering or Computer Science

uOttawa's Faculty of Engineering also houses Computer Science. Software and Computer Engineering are accredited engineering degrees that lead toward a P.Eng. licence. Computer Science is accredited by CIPS but doesn't lead to a P.Eng. on its own.

Software Engineering focuses on building large systems with real users, with mandatory co-op. Computer Engineering mixes hardware and software, from processors to embedded systems. For the CS route, read our uOttawa Computer Science page.

Many programs also come as a dual fast-track degree with Computing Technology, which earns two degrees and saves one or two terms. You can add an Engineering Management option to most programs without extra time.

Co-op

uOttawa says its co-op program is the second largest in Ontario. You could graduate with 16 to 20 months of paid work. Work terms run four, eight or twelve months, depending on the program sequence.

For most programs co-op is optional. You can apply when you apply to uOttawa if your admission average is at least 80%. Then you normally need an 80% average in first year to keep your spot. You can also apply later with a 75% average. Software Engineering co-op is mandatory.

uOttawa says roughly 1,000 students are accepted to co-op each year, and the number for each program changes. You work in your field, earn a salary and write a report after each placement. If you join after starting your degree, the application deadline is September 30 for most programs.

Software Engineering students follow one of five set sequences of study and work terms. The default sequence applies unless you're hired for an 8 or 12 month term with one company, or need to study in the summer after first year.

Optional co-op costs $896 for each work term you're matched to a job in 2026-27. Mandatory co-op is $672 for each study term.

For parents

uOttawa is one of the more transparent schools: it publishes a firm minimum for every program. Treat Computer and Software Engineering as competitive, even above the minimum.

Co-op can cover a lot of the cost, but optional co-op is decided at admission and kept with an 80% first-year average. Ask your child whether they want it before they apply.
