Course requirements

uOttawa's requirements tool lists English 4U (ENG4U) or Français 4U (FRA4U), Advanced Functions 4U (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors 4U (MCV4U), and two of Biology 4U (SBI4U), Chemistry 4U (SCH4U), Physics 4U (SPH4U) or Earth and Space Science 4U (SES4U). You need a combined average of at least 70% across the math and science prerequisites.

If you don't have MCV4U, uOttawa says you can take a replacement course at the university the summer before or during your first term. It also says students with a strong background in biology, chemistry and physics tend to do better. First year includes biology, chemistry, physics and calculus courses, so taking all three sciences helps.

You need an Ontario high school diploma with at least six 4U, 4M or DU courses. All prerequisites must be 4U unless noted. Grade 12 co-op, career and work experience courses don't count. For the English prerequisite, uOttawa accepts ENG4U, EAE4U, EAL4U, ETS4U, EAC4U, EWC4U, FRA4U and FLO4U. Plan your timetable with our course planner.

The average you need

uOttawa lists a minimum admission average of 80% for this program. It says these are minimum requirements, and meeting them does not guarantee admission. uOttawa does not publish a past admitted average for Environmental Science.

uOttawa calculates your average from your top six 4U, 4M or DU grades, including the prerequisites. If math is required, it always uses the highest level of math you attempted. If you repeat a course, it uses your best mark. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

Dates and offer rounds for Fall 2027

uOttawa's requirements tool lists the fall application deadline for Canadian applicants as June 1, 2027, with documents due June 15, 2027. It shows admission as open.

Ontario high school applicants are reviewed in three rounds. Round one runs from mid-November to the end of January and uses your best five final grades from Grade 11 and 12. Round two runs from mid-February to mid-April. Round three runs from mid-May to August and uses six Grade 12 grades. uOttawa doesn't deny admission in the first two rounds, so an early application gives you more chances at an offer.

The late June deadline is for uOttawa itself. Check the OUAC dates for your other Ontario choices on our Ontario deadlines page. There is no essay, interview or supplementary form for this program.

What you study

The program combines biology, Earth sciences, chemistry and physics. First-year compulsory courses include BIO 1131 Introduction to Organismal Biology, CHM 1311 Principles of Chemistry, EVS 1101 Introduction to Environmental Science, GEO 1111 Introduction to Earth Systems, MAT 1330 and MAT 1332 Calculus for the Life Sciences, and PHY 1321 Principles of Physics I.

Later you choose one of three options: Conservation and Biodiversity, Global Change, or Environmental Geochemistry and Ecotoxicology. Required upper-year courses include EVS 3101 Environmental Issues, EVS 3120 Environmental Microbiology and EVS 4010 Field Course in Environmental Science. In your final year you do a research project or more advanced courses in your option.

uOttawa says the program is accredited by ECO Canada. It's offered in English and French.

Fieldwork is built in. EVS 4010 is a combined biology, geochemistry and hydrogeology field course focused on sampling soil, water, air and sediment. The program page says it runs two weeks at the end of August, outside Ottawa, and students pay fees for accommodation and transportation. Budget for that.

Co-op details

Co-op is optional. You can ask for a reserved co-op spot when you apply, if your admission average is 80% or higher. To keep it, you need a cumulative grade point average of at least 8.0 until you are formally admitted to co-op in second year. You can also apply once you're at uOttawa.

The Environmental Science co-op page asks for a CGPA of at least 6, all first-year courses done, and full-time study. Spots are limited, and the highest CGPAs are admitted first. In the default sequence, your first work term is the summer after second year, and you finish four work terms by the end of a fifth year of study.

Co-op fees are paid for the term before your first work term and for each work term. uOttawa lists $896 per fee for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Past employers include Environment and Climate Change Canada, Parks Canada, Natural Resources Canada and the City of Ottawa. Sample tasks include environmental site assessment, environmental audits, and collecting and analyzing data.

How it compares with other uOttawa options

Environmental Science asks for a broad first year: biology, chemistry, physics, Earth science and calculus are all compulsory at the 1000 level. If you'd rather focus on one science, the program page links to a side by side comparison of all uOttawa science programs.

If you're more drawn to human health than the natural environment, see our uOttawa Health Sciences guide. For a lab-heavy health science degree, see our uOttawa Biomedical Science guide.

For parents

The 80% minimum and the 70% prerequisite average are both published. Most students will want to clear both comfortably, because meeting minimums doesn't guarantee an offer.

The French immersion stream lets students take one third of their courses in French. Read our University of Ottawa guide for residence and campus context.
