Which economics program to pick
The department lists three four-year, 120-unit honours programs you can enter from high school. They are Honours in Economics, Joint Honours in Economics and Political Science, and Joint Honours in Mathematics and Economics. There is also a 42-unit major and a 30-unit minor that you add to another degree.
The department also points to three related honours programs: Economics and Public Policy, Environmental Economics and Public Policy, and International Economics and Development. This page covers Honours Economics and the math joint program. For the political science side, read our uOttawa Political Science page.

Course requirements
For Honours Economics, you need English 4U or Français 4U, plus Advanced Functions 4U. uOttawa strongly recommends Calculus and Vectors 4U. You also need an Ontario diploma with at least six 4U, 4M or DU courses. Grade 12 co-op, career and work experience courses do not count.
The math joint program adds Calculus and Vectors as a requirement. It also needs a combined 70% across your math prerequisites. If you do not have Calculus, the English page says you can take a replacement course at uOttawa the summer before or during your first term. Use our course planner to fit both math courses into Grade 12.

The average you need
The tool lists a 75% minimum for Honours Economics in English and 73% for the French program. For Mathematics and Economics, it lists 80% in English and 75% in French. uOttawa says meeting these minimums does not guarantee admission. It does not publish an admitted range or an acceptance rate for economics.
uOttawa uses your top six 4U, 4M or DU grades, including prerequisites. When math is required, it always counts the highest level of math you attempted. If you repeat a course, it uses your best mark. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

How the three admission rounds work
uOttawa reviews Ontario high school applications in three rounds. Round one runs mid November to end of January, using your best five Grade 11 and 12 grades. For programs with math prerequisites, all math grades count. Nobody is denied in round one.
Round two runs mid February to mid April, with six grades including at least two Grade 12 marks. Round three runs mid May to August, using six Grade 12 grades with your prerequisites. Denials and alternative offers go out in round three.

What first year looks like
In Honours Economics your first year has ENG 1100 and ENG 1120 for writing, ECO 1102 Introduction to Macroeconomics and ECO 1104 Introduction to Microeconomics. You also take MAT 1302 Mathematical Methods II, plus MAT 1300 or MAT 1308, and electives.
The catalogue says students thinking about graduate school should pick MAT 1300 or the MAT 1320 and MAT 1322 calculus sequence. In second year you take ECO 2150 and ECO 2151, the statistics and econometrics pair. Co-op students must take them in second year.
In the math joint program, first year math is heavier. It includes MAT 1320 Calculus I, MAT 1322 Calculus II, MAT 1341 Introduction to Linear Algebra and MAT 1362 Mathematical Reasoning and Proofs.

Co-op
Co-op is offered in Honours Economics and the math joint program. You can ask for a reserved co-op spot when you apply. That needs an 80% average or higher for students admitted to first year. To keep it, you need a CGPA of at least 8.0 until you are formally admitted.
If you apply later, the economics page asks for a CGPA of 6, first-year courses done, and ECO 2150 and ECO 2151 in second year. The deadline is September 30 of second year. Places are limited, and the highest CGPAs are admitted first. Work terms start in the summer after second year, and there are four in the standard sequence. Co-op fees apply from the term before your first work term.
Employers on the list include the Bank of Canada, the Department of Finance Canada, Statistics Canada, Global Affairs Canada and Scotiabank.

The math joint program is the step up. It adds Calculus, a 70% math average and an 80% minimum. Pick it if you enjoy proofs and want a strong base for graduate study in economics.

A naming difference to check
The admissions tool and the co-op page call the math program the Joint Honours BSocSc in Mathematics and Economics. The undergraduate catalogue page calls it the Joint Honours BSc in Mathematics and Economics.
The admission rules on the tool are the ones you apply under. Ask uOttawa which degree name will appear on your diploma if that matters to you.

Dates for Fall 2027
The tool lists a Fall 2027 application deadline of June 1, 2027 for Canadian applicants, with documents due June 15, 2027. Economics has no winter entry. International applicants to Honours Economics have May 1 and May 15, 2027. For the math joint program, the international dates are January 15 and February 15, 2027.
Offers start in mid November, so applying late means you miss the early rounds. For the OUAC equal consideration date, see our Ontario deadlines page.
