Course requirements from Ontario

Carleton asks for an Ontario diploma with six Grade 12 courses at the 4U or 4M level. Prerequisite courses must be 4U, with no single grade below 60%. Grade 12 co-op credits do not count among the six.

For the BA, the only required course for all majors, including Psychology, is English (ENG4U). For the BSc in Psychology, Carleton asks for Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and two credits from Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U), Earth and Space Science (SES4U) or Physics (SPH4U). Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) is strongly recommended. Carleton also recommends ENG4U for every degree.

Plan your Grade 12 timetable with our course planner. Taking MHF4U and two sciences keeps both the BA and the BSc open.

The 75% and 78% cut-off ranges

Carleton's requirements tool shows a cut-off range of 75% for the Arts (BA) degree and 78% for the Science (BSc) degree. Carleton says the ranges apply to both your overall average and your prerequisite average. It also says the average needed is set each year program by program, every program has limited enrolment, and admission is not guaranteed.

Carleton does not publish a separate cut-off or acceptance rate for Psychology. Treat the ranges as a minimum. Check our Carleton University acceptance rate page and use our Top 6 average calculator.

BA or BSc: which to pick

Both degrees cover the same core psychology. The BA adds electives in the social sciences and humanities. The BSc adds electives in the natural sciences. The calendar lists a 20.0 credit BA Honours, a BA Combined Honours, a 15.0 credit BA and a 20.0 credit BSc Honours.

Every student takes PSYC 1001 and PSYC 1002, Introduction to Psychology I and II, then PSYC 2001 research methods and PSYC 2002 statistics. Honours students can add one of five concentrations: Cognitive, Developmental, Forensic, Health, or Social/Personality Psychology. Carleton says its Mental Health and Well-Being stream is unique to Carleton.

Honours seminars and thesis

The calendar says Honours students need a Major CGPA of at least 9.00 to register in the fourth-year seminars and at least 10.00 to register in the thesis course.

If you plan on graduate school in psychology, aim for the thesis. Many Carleton students also volunteer in psychology labs, which Carleton lists as a way to gain research experience.

Sample courses and careers

Carleton's program pages list sample courses. PSYC 1001 surveys psychology as a natural science, including neuroscience, cognition and learning. PSYC 3402 Criminal Behaviour looks at offender assessment, types of offenders and how well treatment works. PSYC 3506 Cognitive Development looks at memory, thinking and language across the life span.

For careers, Carleton lists academic research, corrections, counselling, early childhood education, health and social services, human resources, marketing, mental health work, parole and probation, psychiatry, psychotherapy, public relations and teaching. Check what extra training each path needs before you plan your degree around it.

Carleton also points to its location in Ottawa, the national capital. It says government, community, health and research settings in the region can connect your studies to real work. Applied options include practicum courses and co-op placements in community agencies, government departments and the private sector.

Psychology co-op

Co-op is open to students in the BA Honours or BSc Honours Psychology program. You need third-year standing, PSYC 2001 and PSYC 2002 done by your first work term, and COOP 1000. You must keep an Overall CGPA and a Major CGPA of at least 9.50 through the degree.

You must finish three work terms to earn the co-op designation. The work term report course is PSYC 3999. The 2026-27 co-op program fee is $540.64 a term. Co-op is not part of your first-year offer, so strong marks in first and second year matter.
