Course requirements

Ontario students need Chemistry (SCH4U), Physics (SPH4U) and Advanced Functions (MHF4U). USask wants at least 70% in each. Saskatchewan students need Chemistry 30, Physics 30 and Pre-Calculus 30, also at 70%.

Calculus is not required. USask dropped Calculus 30 as a requirement in 2019 to lower barriers to engineering. If you take it anyway, USask says it can still count in your average when that helps you. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The average you need

USask posts an expected target average of 87%. It says students who meet it can expect a regular offer, based on last year's applicants. The target comes from 2026-27 results. The number for Fall 2027 entry could be higher or lower.

Admission is competitive, and meeting the target does not guarantee a spot. After the early deadline, USask ranks all applicants by average and offers spaces to the top ones. USask does not publish an acceptance rate for engineering. Estimate your marks with our Top 6 average calculator, then work out the five mark average below.

How USask works out your average

USask uses five marks: one English, one math and three other approved subjects. Of those three, no more than two can be natural sciences, no more than two can be social sciences or humanities, and no more than one can be an art. For Ontario, English is ENG4U and math can be MHF4U, MCV4U or MDM4U.

This matters for engineering. English counts in your average even though it is not a listed requirement. Between September and February 1, USask uses your Grade 11 marks where Grade 12 marks are not ready. From February 2, it uses marks up to the end of your first Grade 12 term. Any offer then has a condition based on your final marks.

Supplementary application

USask lists no essay, interview or Casper test for engineering. You are ranked by your admission average. Engineering is a direct entry program, so you can apply straight from high school.

Some seats are set aside for Indigenous applicants, who must verify membership or citizenship through PAWS. USask also runs access programs for Indigenous students who are missing a science course or are below the minimum average.

Dates for Fall 2027

The early admission deadline is December 1, 2026. Your documents are due the same day. If your average is 89% or higher by then, you are eligible for an early offer. The final deadline is February 15, 2027, with documents due March 1, 2027.

The application fee is $120 and is not refundable. USask uses its own application, not OUAC. Compare other dates on our Canadian deadlines page.

First year: RE-ENGINEERED

USask calls its first year RE-ENGINEERED. Instead of high stakes exams, you get more assignments and quizzes, so you can recover from a slow start. Daily tutorials are part of the schedule. Instead of final exams, you try the different branches of engineering in hands-on courses.

Courses run through fall and winter: Introduction to Engineering, Mechanics, Design, Engineering Mathematics, Electrical Circuits and Engineering Communication. You also take computer science, natural science and process engineering. All first years share the same lunch hour, and the school day starts and ends at the same times.

Choosing your major

You choose your major near the end of first year. USask has eight majors, all accredited by Engineers Canada: Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Engineering Physics, Environmental, Geological and Mechanical.

You can add options such as Mining, Petroleum or Bioprocessing in some majors. Certificates in Professional Communication and Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship can be taken with your degree.

Co-op internship

Co-op is optional. You first take an online Introduction to Co-operative Education course, usually in second year, after you choose your major. Your first work term can start in May after second year. Later terms run 4, 8, 12 or 16 months, starting in January, May or September.

You can earn up to 20 months of paid work. With 12 months or more, your transcript says Co-op Internship. USask says 66% of undergrads join, 79% of placements are in Saskatchewan, and the average monthly pay is $4,950. Co-op can add at least a year to your degree, and you pay tuition during work terms.

To stay in co-op you must keep good academic standing in engineering. You cannot be on a work term while you take your capstone design course. You also need at least 12 credit units left when you come back to class. Student loans can usually be put on hold during a placement, and scholarships stay valid.

Scholarships

USask gives 600 entering students a $5,000 USask Entrance Scholarship each year, based on admission average. You are considered on your own if you apply and send your documents by December 1. Offers go out by email from late April.

The Best and Brightest awards are worth up to $40,000 over four years. They need an admission application by December 1 and a separate form in PAWS by December 15. Competitive Entrance Awards need your admission application by February 15 and forms by March 1.

For parents

The December 1 date is the one to plan around. It is the early offer deadline and the key scholarship deadline. Missing it does not end your child's chances, but it can cost money.
