Courses you need
UPEI asks high school applicants for Grade 12 academic English, Grade 12 academic math, two Grade 12 academic sciences from biology, chemistry or physics, and one more Grade 12 academic course.
Take chemistry as one of your sciences. General Chemistry I (Chemistry 1110) is a required first-year course, and its prerequisite is Grade 12 academic chemistry or UPEI Chemistry 0001. Physics is the natural second science for statics and dynamics.
UPEI's equivalency chart lists Grade 12 4U math-based courses for Ontario students and says MDM4U counts only for arts, business and nursing. So plan on MHF4U or MCV4U for engineering. Map your timetable with our high school course planner.

The average you need
UPEI's rule has three parts. Your average over the five admission courses must be at least 70%. Your Grade 12 math must be at least 70%. No admission course can be under 65%.
UPEI does not publish an average of admitted engineering students. The 65% floor on each course matters as much as the 70% average, so a weak science mark can block you even with a strong overall average.
Check where you stand with our Top 6 average calculator. UPEI uses five courses, so also work out your five-course average by hand.

How the degree finishes
You complete the whole degree at UPEI. The program page and the 2026-2027 calendar both describe a degree that can be taken over a four-year or a five-year course plan, with 141 credit hours in total. Neither page sends students to another school to finish.
The name differs slightly between pages. The program page calls it the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design Engineering. The calendar's admission chapter calls it the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Sustainable Design Engineering). Both describe the same program in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering.
The UPEI pages we checked do not state the program's engineering accreditation status. If a licensed engineering career is your goal, ask the faculty about accreditation before you accept.

No essay or interview
Neither the program page nor the calendar lists an essay, portfolio, interview or supplementary form for engineering. Your grades in the five admission courses decide the offer.
UPEI's application page says some programs need extra documents, and you can see them in your application portal. Engineering is not on UPEI's list of programs with a different process.

Dates for Fall 2027
UPEI says applications for 2027-2028 open in September 2026. The pages we checked do not list a separate application deadline for engineering. They do list February 15 for nursing.
The key date for engineering is March 1. High school applicants should apply by March 1 to be considered for entrance scholarships, and the Entrance Award Cycle application form is due the same day. First-year course registration starts in March 2027.

What first year looks like
In the four-year plan, the fall term is Engineering Communications (ENGN 1210), Statics (ENGN 1230), Sustainability in Engineering Design (ENGN 1410), General Chemistry I, Calculus I (MATH 1910) and Linear Algebra (MATH 2610).
Winter adds Engineering Analysis (ENGN 1220), Materials Science (ENGN 1250), Computer Programming (ENGN 1310), Dynamics (ENGN 1340), Calculus II (MATH 1920) and Academic Writing. The posted matrix is the 2024-2025 version, so check the current one with an adviser.
Design clinics run through every year. First-year students work on design problems for community groups and businesses. You need at least 60% in each design clinic course to move to the next one. In years 3 and 4 you choose electives in Mechatronics, Bioresources or Sustainable Energy.

Co-op and industry placements
UPEI's 2026-2027 calendar lists co-op streams for subjects such as biology, business, chemistry and physics, but not engineering. Instead, the faculty runs an Industry Placement Program that tries to place students in engineering jobs with industry partners.
Placements can be up to 4 months in the summer, May to August. Students willing to defer finishing their degree by one year can take a longer placement of up to 16 months.

Tuition for 2026-27
UPEI's fee selector, approved for 2026-2027, shows engineering tuition of $4,065 per semester for Canadian students, based on 15 credit hours. That is $813 per 3 credit course. Engineering students also pay a $1,250 Engineering Professional Fee each year.
Our estimate for two full semesters is $8,130 in tuition plus the $1,250 professional fee, or $9,380 before other fees. The selector also lists a $294 fitness and recreation fee, a $107 technology fee and student union fees such as $328 health insurance and $186 dental insurance, which you may opt out of with proof of other coverage.
This is our estimate from UPEI's posted rates, not a UPEI figure. International students pay $9,718 more per year.
