Course requirements
For direct entry from an Ontario high school, the University of Manitoba asks for a minimum 80% average over English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U) or Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) and Physics (SPH4U), with at least 70% in each.
Direct entry applicants have not attended a post-secondary school or have fewer than 24 credit hours. If you don't meet the requirements, UM suggests applying to University 1 or the Faculty of Science instead. Plan your Grade 12 courses with our course planner.

The 80% minimum
Unlike schools that publish a range, UManitoba states a minimum: 80% over the four required courses. It also says that when eligible applicants outnumber spaces, successful applicants need higher averages than the minimum, so 80% doesn't guarantee an offer.
UM doesn't publish an Engineering acceptance rate; our University of Manitoba acceptance rate page explains what it does publish. Work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

The common first year
Every student starts with a preliminary year of 13 courses common to all engineering programs. After first year you apply to one of five programs: Biosystems, Civil, Computer, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. You must get into one of them to finish the degree.
Entry to a program is competitive. It's based on a GPA calculated from your best eight grades out of the 13 first-year courses. The degree is planned as four years, and UM says it typically takes four to five.
Sample courses include Design in Engineering, Engineering Communication, Computer Programming for Scientists and Engineers, Electric Circuits, Structural Analysis and Machine Design.

How to apply
Apply online to the Price Faculty of Engineering. For fall direct entry, applications open in early September and close March 1. You may need to send transcripts, proof of English language proficiency and other documents.
If you're offered admission, you must accept in your applicant portal and pay an enrolment deposit by the date in your letter, or the offer lapses. Most UM programs don't allow deferrals, so you'd reapply for a later intake.

Co-op and the Industrial Internship Program
Every engineering student can choose to join the Co-op/Industrial Internship Program (Co-op/IIP) for paid, hands-on work experience. It's optional. Students who complete it have it noted on their degree parchment and earn credit toward professional engineering certification.
All Price Faculty programs are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, which meets the academic requirements for licensing as a professional engineer in Canada.

Engineering Access Program
The Engineering Access Program (ENGAP) helps Indigenous students get into, prepare for and succeed in the Price Faculty of Engineering. ENGAP students earn the same degree as other engineering students, with added resources and a supportive community.
UM notes strong demand across Canada for engineers with an Indigenous background, and describes ENGAP as a home away from home for its students.

The Faculty and its programs
UM calls the Price Faculty of Engineering Western Canada's oldest engineering school. It has five departments and more than 20 programs and options, and each of the five programs has its own focus areas, options and specializations.
The Faculty points to small class sizes and more than 25 extra- and co-curricular groups, including award-winning design teams. The University of Manitoba Engineering Society runs leadership, professional development and social events. CEAB accreditation also counts toward licensing in nineteen other countries through an international agreement.

Other ways in
Advanced entry is for students with 24 or more credit hours in another faculty at UM or another recognized school, including several required courses. Its fall applications open in early November and also close March 1.
Mature applicants, 21 or older with fewer than 24 credit hours, still need at least 70% in Grade 12 English, chemistry, physics and math and an 80% average over them. UM says that if high school applicants need a higher average than the minimum, the same higher average applies to mature students.

Tuition and scholarships
UM charges most undergraduate tuition per credit hour, based on the faculty that teaches each course. The 2026-2027 Engineering rate is $186.37 a credit hour for domestic students and $683.43 for international students. UM's estimate for a full fall and winter year in Engineering, including program fees, the U-Pass, gym and health and dental plans, is $9,700 for Canadians and $31,400 for international students.
New students are considered automatically for UM's General Entrance Scholarships when they apply and send transcripts. The Price Faculty lists nine entrance awards; several of the automatic ones need at least an 85% average in the courses used for admission.
To receive an entrance award you must be registered in both fall and winter terms with at least an 80% course load, or 24 credit hours. If you drop below that, UM can take back up to the full award. Awards that need an application, such as the Schulich Leader and BMO Leader of Tomorrow scholarships, have their own deadlines.

For parents
UManitoba is clear about the bar: 80% across English, math, chemistry and physics, with nothing below 70%. One weak Physics mark can make your child ineligible even with a strong overall average.
First-year marks then decide which of the five programs your child enters, so the competition continues after admission.
