How you get into Computer Science at USask

USask offers Computer Science as a three year BSc, a four year BSc, a BSc Honours, a BSc Honours with a Software Engineering Option and a Double Honours. You can study full or part time, and start in Saskatoon, Prince Albert or off campus.

You apply to a Bachelor of Science program in the College of Arts and Science, not to Computer Science itself. USask says competitive selection for the Computer Science major takes place at the end of first year. The ranking is based on your average in the required computer science and math courses: CMPT 141 or CMPT 142, CMPT 145 or CMPT 146, and MATH 163 or MATH 164. USask does not publish a cut off for that ranking.

High school course requirements

Saskatchewan students need Foundations of Mathematics 30 or Pre-Calculus 30. USask recommends Pre-Calculus 30 for anyone heading to the Bachelor of Science. Ontario students need Mathematics of Data Management 4U or Advanced Functions 4U. Since first year Computer Science leans on calculus, MHF4U is the better pick if you can take it.

USask says you can be admitted with a math gap, but you should talk to the college after admission about how to clear it. USask also notes that the classes needed for admission are not always the classes you need for your degree. For example, you need high school chemistry to take first year chemistry. Plan your Grade 12 year with our course planner.

The 70% minimum and how USask counts it

The minimum admission average for the College of Arts and Science is 70%, for Saskatchewan and Ontario applicants alike. USask says applications are considered up to the deadline and offers are made on an ongoing basis until all seats are filled. If you may fall short, USask points to its Transition Entrance Program, called USTEP, or to special admission.

USask counts five marks: one English, one math and three other approved subjects, with limits on how many sciences, social sciences or arts courses count. From September to February 1 it uses your Grade 11 marks. From February 2 to June 30 it uses marks up to the end of Grade 12 Term 1. Offers made early say you must keep a minimum average in your final Grade 12 marks. Our Top 6 average calculator gives you a rough check, and our USask acceptance rate page covers what the school shares. USask does not publish a Computer Science acceptance rate.

Fall 2027 deadlines

For Fall 2027, USask lists a deadline of July 15, 2027 for Canadian applicants and May 1, 2027 for international applicants. For Winter 2028 the dates are December 1, 2027 and September 1, 2027.

The scholarship date is much earlier. To be considered for the $5,000 USask Entrance Scholarship, your application, fee, transcript and other documents must reach the Admissions Office by December 1. Seats are filled on a rolling basis, so applying in the fall of Grade 12 is the smart move. Compare other schools on our Canadian university application deadlines page.

First year courses

In first year you take the courses that decide your place in the major. The admissions page names CMPT 141 or CMPT 142, CMPT 145 or CMPT 146, and MATH 163 or MATH 164. The four year BSc catalogue lists MATH 163 or MATH 164 as a college requirement and CMPT 116 or CMPT 141 and CMPT 117 or CMPT 145 among the first major courses. Check the course list with the Arts and Science advising office before you register.

Because the major is competitive, strong marks in these three or four courses matter more than anything else you do in first year.

Co-op and the Professional Internship Program

USask Computer Science does not run a co-op stream with work terms built in from first year. Instead it has the Computer Science Professional Internship Program. Students work 12 or 16 months in a row, starting in May or September, before their final year. USask stresses it is not a summer job program. Past host companies named on the admissions page include IBM and SED Systems.

You must be declared in a four year or Honours Computer Science or Applied Computing major. Applications are taken from September 1 to 30, usually when you enter third year. Interns register in CMPT 401 to 404 and pay tuition and student fees for those terms. USask reports that 73% of internship students from 2021 to 2023 got job offers from their host company.

Tuition for 2026-27

USask charges tuition by the class, so your bill depends on what you take. For 2026-27 the tuition page estimates a full fall and winter course load in Science at $8,449 for domestic students. The Computer Science page shows $40,894 in tuition for international students.

With student fees of $1,331.66 and $1,500 for books, the Computer Science page totals one year at $11,280.66 for Canadians and $43,725.66 for international students. Housing and food are extra.

Scholarships and residence

USask Entrance Scholarships go to about 600 high achieving new students each year, at $5,000 each. Students in direct entry programs are considered automatically based on their admission average if everything is in by December 1. Offers go out starting in late April. You must take at least 18 credit units across fall and winter to be paid.

Voyageur Place is the main first year residence, with dorm rooms and three meals a day. Residence applications open in early November and run to May, and offers go out first come, first served. You can apply before you are admitted. USask does not state a first year residence guarantee.

For parents

A 70% offer to Arts and Science is not a seat in Computer Science. The real test comes at the end of first year, when your child competes for the major using a small set of course marks. Help them treat first year like Grade 12 all over again.

Apply by December 1 for the scholarship, and apply early for residence. See our University of Saskatchewan guide and compare other options on our computer science requirements across Canada page.
