Course requirements

Carleton asks for an OSSD with six Grade 12 4U or 4M courses. For Health Sciences, three are set. You need Advanced Functions (MHF4U). You also need two of Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U), Earth and Space Science (SES4U) or Physics (SPH4U).

Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) is strongly recommended. Grade 12 English is recommended for all Carleton degrees, but it is not required here. Prerequisites must be at the 4U level, with no single grade below 60%. Grade 12 co-op credits don't count toward your six courses. Plan your courses with our course planner.

First-year Health Sciences includes biology, chemistry and calculus courses. So Biology, Chemistry and Calculus in Grade 12 are a smart choice, even when not required.

The 80 to 85% cut-off range

Carleton lists a cut-off range of 80 to 85% for Health Sciences. The range applies to your overall average and to your prerequisite average. Carleton sets the average each year, program by program. All programs have limited spots, and admission is not guaranteed.

The calendar adds that meeting the minimum only makes you eligible. Cut-offs can be higher than the minimum when demand is high. Carleton does not publish an acceptance rate for this program. Work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator. For what Carleton shares across the school, see our Carleton acceptance rate page.

No supplementary application

Carleton lists the programs that need extra material: Architectural Studies, Industrial Design, Information Technology (Interactive Multimedia and Design), Nursing, Music and Social Work. Health Sciences is not on that list. You don't write essays, record a video or take Casper for this program.

That means your grades decide your offer. Your Grade 12 marks in math and science matter most, since the range applies to your prerequisite average too.

First year and the five concentrations

The Honours BHSc is 20.0 credits. First-year core courses include Fundamentals of Health (HLTH 1000) and Health Science Communication (HLTH 1002). You also take Foundations of Biology I and II, General Chemistry I and II and Elementary Calculus I. You pick either economics or psychology as well.

Before second year you choose one of five concentrations: Biomedical Sciences, Disability and Chronic Illness, Environment and Health, Global Health, or Health Throughout the Lifespan. Later core courses cover pathology, epidemiology, immunity and social factors in health.

In fourth year you finish with a capstone. You can choose a group research project, a field placement with a research project, an honours thesis or a research essay.

Co-op and work experience

Carleton's co-op office lists the undergraduate programs with co-op. The Bachelor of Health Sciences is not on that list, so plan on no formal co-op for this degree. Neuroscience and Mental Health is on the list, if co-op matters to you.

The BHSc program page points to other work options instead. You can apply for a paid summer research internship or do research as part of your courses. The capstone can include a research field placement. Ottawa hospitals, research institutes and government agencies are close by.

Scholarships

If you are admitted for fall with an 85% average or higher, Carleton automatically considers you for a renewable Entrance Scholarship. You must come straight from high school or CEGEP. Carleton needs your full application and grades by June 15.

Prestige Scholarships are Carleton's top awards. They need a 90% average or higher, plus an application and reference letter by March 1. Carleton also has an Entrance Bursary, due June 30, for help with first-year costs.

Residence

If you are admitted to first year by May 31, 2027, Carleton offers you a place in residence. To keep it, confirm your offer and pay the $700 Residence Advance Payment by June 7, 2027.

For 2026-27, a double room with the All Access meal plan in a traditional residence costs $14,010.36 for fall and winter. A single room with the same plan is $15,830.36. Fees cover the room, internet, meals and residence association fees. Fall 2027 rates will be posted later.

For parents

Carleton posts a clear range for this program, and there is no supplementary application. That makes it easier to judge your child's chances than at programs like McMaster or Queen's. Grades in math and two sciences carry a lot of weight.

Plan the first-year budget as tuition plus residence. Using Carleton's 2026-27 numbers, $7,637.46 tuition and fees plus $14,010.36 for a double room comes to about $21,650. That is our arithmetic, not a Carleton figure. Mark May 31 and June 7, 2027 for residence.
