Carleton Residence Buildings Compared: 9 First-Year Houses, Rooms and 2026-27 Costs
First-year students at Carleton live in the nine traditional-style houses. The three suite-style buildings are for upper-year students. Every house has a mandatory meal plan and lists air conditioning. The real differences are the washroom setup, building size and whether there's an elevator. For Fall 2027, Carleton guarantees a traditional double room to eligible students admitted by May 31, 2027 who accept and pay the $700 deposit by June 7, 2027.

The nine first-year houses side by side
These figures come from each building's page on Carleton's housing site. All nine have a TV lounge and a study lounge on every floor, Wi-Fi and ethernet, and a mandatory meal plan. Teraanga Commons and the outdoor residence quad connect the 12 residence buildings.

What each first-year room type means
A standard traditional double has two beds, two desks and chairs, and a washroom shared with the room next door. Most first-year students live in one of these.
Glengarry has the most layouts. Its communal-washroom double has a sink in the room, with staff-cleaned washrooms on the floor. In a five-person pod, a first-year double shares a common area, one full bathroom and one half bathroom with three upper-year singles.
Lennox and Addington has doubles where the two roommates share their own ensuite washroom. Carleton's fee page says a limited number are also in Stormont, but the room-types page lists only Lennox and Addington. Rideau House pairs a first-year double with an upper-year single around a shared washroom.
Single rooms are mainly for returning students. You can request one as a documented accommodation, but it isn't guaranteed.
2026-27 costs by first-year room type
Carleton's fees are per person for September to April. They include the room, utilities, internet, the meal plan, the residence association fee and tenant insurance. The All Access meal plan comes with every traditional room. You can upgrade to All Access Plus for $200 more a year, which doubles your Dining Dollars. Carleton hasn't published 2027-28 fees yet.
| Room type | Where | 2026-27 total with All Access | Per term |

- Tenant insurance covers belongings up to $10,000 with a $500 deductible.
The Fall 2027 guarantee and how room selection works
Carleton guarantees a traditional double room to secondary school and CEGEP students entering first year in fall 2027 who get their offer of admission on or before May 31, 2027. You must accept the residence offer and pay the $700 Residence Advance Payment online by June 7, 2027. Ontario high school students must accept their offer of admission by June 1, 2027. If you miss the guarantee, you can still apply, but you won't be guaranteed a room.
Carleton's housing application page still shows the 2026 cycle, so use it as a guide to the order of steps, not the 2027 dates. In 2026, the Housing Portal opened February 2. Guaranteed students got a lottery time ticket by email by June 12. Selection started the week of June 15 and stayed open until June 30.
- Accept your offer of admission first, then wait for Carleton360 to show Applicant Acceptance. Carleton says this can take three or four days.
- In the Housing Portal, accept the residence offer and pay the $700 deposit through the portal, not your student account. The deposit is non-refundable.
- Click Save and Complete, then check your Carleton email for two messages: a receipt and a confirmation.
- Fill in the lifestyle questionnaire. You can form a roommate group or use suggested roommates, which include students of all genders.
- At your time ticket, the group member with the earliest ticket can pick rooms for everyone. If someone picks for you, you have 24 hours to accept.
- Special accommodation requests need medical documentation uploaded by the first-year deadline. A request doesn't guarantee a specific room.
How to rank the houses for yourself
Carleton doesn't name a best residence, and what's left depends on your time ticket. Decide on these points before selection opens.
- Budget: the Glengarry communal-washroom double is the cheapest first-year option at $13,802.36; the pod double is the priciest first-year double at $14,790.36.
- Stairs: Lanark and Renfrew have no elevators. Rideau lists 8 enhanced accessible spaces, and Dundas, Glengarry, Stormont and Lennox and Addington also list accessible spaces.
- Size: Lennox and Addington (717 residents) and Glengarry (614) are the big towers. Grenville, Russell, Lanark and Renfrew have fewer than 200 each.
- Extras: Rideau adds a fitness centre, half-court gym, community kitchen, games rooms, a multi-faith space and a low-sensory space for residence students.
- Laundry: Grenville and Russell have laundry on every floor; Dundas, Stormont and Lennox and Addington have it on the tunnel level.
- Support: the housing office is at 261 Stormont and Residence Counselling is at 131 Renfrew.
Year-round residence for international and nursing students
Since September 2025, international students can live in residence for up to 12 months a year for their whole degree, for up to five consecutive years. Your offer covers September to April. To stay May to August, apply for the summer extension in the Housing Portal each year, and you may have to move rooms for the summer.
Nursing (BScN) students have a similar 12-month option for up to four consecutive years.
