Course requirements

From an Ontario high school, Western asks for English (ENG4U), Biology (SBI4U), and one of Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) or Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U).

Western's general rules apply too. You need an OSSD (the Ontario Secondary School Diploma) with at least six Grade 12 U or M courses, not counting co-op, and at least 70% in each required course. Western also looks at all your Grade 11 U and M courses.

Chemistry (SCH4U) isn't required to get in, but Western says to take it if you want Health Sciences with Biology. It's the prerequisite for the first-year chemistry course that option needs. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The average guideline

Western lists an admission average guideline of the high 80s to low 90s for Health Sciences. It reflects Ontario high school students, and Western says an average in that range doesn't guarantee admission.

The first-year class is 450 students. Western doesn't publish a Health Sciences acceptance rate; our Western acceptance rate page explains what it does publish. Work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

How Western decides beyond the average

Western says its typical first-year class enters with an average of around 88%, and that grades in your required courses matter alongside the overall number. It also looks for consistent performance.

Western may ask for more information if your grades varied a lot between high schools, if you repeated courses with very different results, or to judge how demanding your courses were. If your grades don't reflect your potential because of barriers you faced, Western has equitable admission pathways and still encourages you to apply.

Health Sciences or Kinesiology?

Both sit in Western's Faculty of Health Sciences, and students often weigh them against each other. Kinesiology (OUAC code EP) lists a guideline in the high 80s, a first-year class of 335, and needs only English and Biology. Western recommends a Grade 12 math and Physics for senior Kinesiology courses, plus Chemistry, Calculus and Advanced Functions for its BSc.

Health Sciences (EW) has a slightly higher guideline, a larger first-year class of 450, and needs a 4U math. If you're unsure, compare the course lists and the options each program leads to before you choose your OUAC codes.

How to apply and key dates

Apply through OUAC with code EW by January 15, 2027 for equal consideration. Western lists no supplementary application or Casper test for Health Sciences. If you want to be considered for an Ivey Advanced Entry Opportunity, see our Western Ivey AEO guide.

Western's earliest response date for Ontario high school students is June 1, 2027. The residence placement questionnaire and prepayment are due June 3, 2027.

Choosing an option after you start

You don't pick the option on your OUAC application. You enter Health Sciences, take first-year courses such as Personal Determinants of Health and Biology for Science, then move into a module.

Health Sciences with Biology adds Functional Human Gross Anatomy and chemistry in first year, then biochemistry, cell biology and human genetics. Public Health covers epidemiology and population aging. Rehabilitation Sciences includes human physiology and the foundations of rehabilitation science. The general Health Sciences option is the most flexible, with majors, minors and honours specializations.

Internships and placements

Western lists co-op and internship as available for Health Sciences, mainly through work-integrated learning: experiential learning placements and internships, plus community engaged learning, study abroad and research.

The main placement course is for fourth-year students in a Health Studies honours module: 75 hours a term, about 6 to 8 hours a week, with a community partner, for 0.5 credit a term. Placements cover areas such as health promotion, health policy, rehabilitation and mental health. The Rehabilitation Sciences practicum runs September to April at Parkwood Hospital in London. Western says international students aren't eligible for a placement at this time. Coordinators help match you, many students find their own placement, and not every opportunity runs each year.

Western also lists $9,856 paid Undergraduate Summer Research Internships. Public Health's list of opportunities doesn't include placements or internships, so check that option if work experience matters to you.

Medicine, dentistry and rehab after Health Sciences

Tuition and scholarships

The Western Scholarship of Excellence, $6,000 in first year, goes to 250 students with top averages. For parents

Western Health Sciences is decided on grades, with a guideline in the high 80s to low 90s. If your child is aiming for medicine, Chemistry in Grade 12 keeps the Health Sciences with Biology option open.

A 90% average also brings an automatic scholarship. Compare Ontario health programs with an adviser if you want a balanced list.
