Course requirements
Carleton's calendar asks Ontario students for six 4U or M courses. They must include English (ENG4U), Physics (SPH4U) and Advanced Functions (MHF4U). Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) is strongly recommended.
Carleton does not list required art courses. Your creative skill shows up in the portfolio instead. Map out your Grade 12 year with our course planner.

The average you need
The calendar says an overall average of at least 70% is normally required. The admissions page calls the program competitive. Carleton does not publish an admission range, cut off or acceptance rate for the BAS on the pages we checked.
A 70% average meets the floor but will not stand out on its own. The portfolio is part of every decision. Work out your current number with our Top 6 average calculator.

Three majors
You pick one of three honours majors: Design, Urbanism, or Conservation and Sustainability. Design focuses on new buildings and spaces for communities. Urbanism looks at what shapes neighbourhoods, cities and landscapes. Conservation and Sustainability looks at protecting historic buildings and reusing them today.
Each major has 8.0 credits of core studio plus 8.5 more credits of requirements, inside a 20.0 credit degree. You send one portfolio even if you list more than one major.

The portfolio
Every BAS applicant sends a portfolio through SlideRoom. It has 4 to 8 pieces of original creative work as JPEG images. Drawings, collage, models, painting, craft, photography, digital work, sketchbooks and process work are all allowed. You also write a personal anecdote of up to 150 words, a preferred major statement of up to 150 words and a short essay of 250 to 300 words.
Carleton says all written and visual work must be your own ideas, practice and effort. You may not copy, trace or show group work as yours alone. AI images and AI written content may not be submitted. AI may be used only for early brainstorming. Work that is copied or made by AI will be disqualified. You also sign an Academic Integrity Declaration.

Planning your portfolio time
Carleton accepts a wide range of media, so you do not need formal art classes. Process work and sketchbooks are allowed, which means rough studies can count as long as they are yours. A piece can include several images, so you can show a model from more than one side.
Start collecting work in the fall of Grade 12. Keep dates and notes on how each piece was made. That makes the Academic Integrity Declaration easy to sign, and it helps you write the personal anecdote and the preferred major statement in your own words before the March 5, 2027 deadline.

Dates for Fall 2027
Ontario high school students apply through OUAC by January 15, 2027. Carleton lists March 1, 2027 for program specific application deadlines and March 5, 2027 for extra admission material. The BAS portfolio is due Friday, March 5, 2027.

Co-op is optional
The BAS has an optional paid co-op. The calendar says you need an overall CGPA of at least 8.0 and third year standing to join, and you must keep that CGPA. You need three work terms for the co-op designation. Co-op adds about one year to the degree.
Carleton's admissions page lists work terms of 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 months. Co-op is not automatic, so treat it as something you earn with strong grades in first and second year.

Staying in the program
To continue, you need a Major CGPA of at least 6.00. Students with 15.5 or more program credits and a Major CGPA under 6.00 must leave the program. The degree must be finished within seven calendar years.
Studio work is heavy, so plan your time from the first term. A strong start also keeps the co-op door open.
Study abroad and the path to licence
All three majors offer Directed Studies Abroad in third year. The BAS prepares students for a professional Master of Architecture or other graduate degrees.
The BAS itself is not a licence to practise. Students who want to become architects plan for a master's degree after the BAS. Carleton's school lists its accreditation details on its own site.
Tuition for 2026-27
Carleton's Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 fee table lists $11,316.96 for a first year, full time Ontario student in the BAS. That figure includes compulsory fees and the U-Pass. Architecture students also pay a $15 society fee and a $60 computer fee in the fall term.
Students from other provinces and international students pay different rates. Budget extra for model materials, printing and a capable laptop. Carleton does not post a supplies estimate for the BAS, so ask current students what they spend.
Entrance scholarships
Students entering from high school with 85% or more are considered automatically. A 95% to 100% average earns $3,000 a year, or $12,000 over four years. A 90% to 94.9% average earns $8,000. An 85% to 89.9% average earns $4,000. You renew with an annual GPA of 10.0, which is A minus.
Prestige Scholarships need 90% or more, an application and a reference letter by March 1, 2027.

For parents
The 70% floor is low, but the portfolio decides a lot. Your child must make every piece and write every word. Carleton bans AI made work and copied work.
