Ontario and Alberta course requirements
Ontario students need English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) and one approved course or option. MHF4U must be at least 70%. Approved courses include any 4U second language, MDM4U or MCV4U, a 4U social studies course such as CHY4U or CGW4U, ICS4U, SPH4U, a 4U fine art and any 4U course. Several 4M options also count, such as Science 4M and Business Studies 4M.
Alberta students need English 30-1, Math 30-1 at 70% or more, Biology 30, Chemistry 30 and one approved course. Only one of art, dance, drama or music can count, and you cannot use two courses in the same subject except the Grade 12 math courses. Plan your courses with our course planner.
These rows come from the Biomedical Sciences and Bioinformatics pages, which list the same courses. We could not find a separate Health and Society requirements page on UCalgary's site, so confirm that major's courses with UCalgary before you apply.

The high 80s estimate and how offers work
UCalgary lists an estimated competitive admission average in the high 80s, with supplemental consideration. That means your grades and your supplementary score are weighed together. UCalgary does not publish a BHSc cut-off or acceptance rate. Our University of Calgary acceptance rate page covers what it does share.
UCalgary reviews high school students in two ways. Early admission uses four approved Grade 11 courses and gives a smaller number of offers at a higher average. Standard admission uses five approved courses from Grade 11 or 12, with at least one Grade 12 course, and gives most offers. If you are admitted, you must finish your Grade 12 requirements and keep your admission average. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator, but remember UCalgary uses four or five program courses, not six.
The supplementary application
Every BHSc applicant must complete a supplementary application. You get the link only after you apply to one of the BHSc majors. It has four short essay questions with no right or wrong answers, and they are not a request for your resume. UCalgary says the answers must be completed by you and you alone.
UCalgary removes your name, gives your file a number and has three people score it blindly. The average score is used with your grades. The supplementary opened October 1, 2026 and is due March 1, 2027. UCalgary encourages you to submit early.

Three majors and what you study
The BHSc is an honours, research-intensive degree from the Cumming School of Medicine. Biomedical Sciences studies the pathways and mechanisms of health and disease, from a single cell to the whole body. Bioinformatics joins biology with computing. Health and Society looks at the social, political and economic factors that shape health, with a focus on equity and public health.
The degree is 120 credits over four years. First-year Biomedical Sciences students take Biology 211 and 213, Chemistry 201 and 203, Mathematics 265 (or 249 if admitted without Math 31), Physics 211 or 221, Medical Science 203 and 205, an English option and an open option. Upper years add research courses such as MDSC 507 and MDSC 528, where you work with a supervisor.

No co-op, but plenty of research
The BHSc pages we checked do not list a co-op option. Instead, UCalgary stresses lab work, tutorials and summer research studentships. Research courses let you earn credit under a faculty supervisor, with a limit of 6 units of MDSC 507 or 528 with the same person or topic.
UCalgary also says the BHSc is not a pre-med program. Its alumni go on to medicine, dentistry, law, pharmacy, optometry, veterinary medicine and graduate school. Career examples include epidemiologist, health economist, pharmaceutical research scientist and biotech founder.

Tuition and awards
UCalgary charges the BHSc at its standard rate for most faculties. For 2026-27 that is $738.66 per three-unit course for domestic students and $3,078.21 for international students. A full year of 10 courses is about $7,387 domestic or $30,782 international by our arithmetic, before general fees, books and residence.
Your entrance award application appears in your Student Centre 24 to 48 hours after you apply. One form covers all competitive entrance awards. The President's Admission Scholarship goes to students with a final admission average of 95.00% or higher.

Transferring in later
If you do not get in from high school, there is a small transfer route into Year 2. You need at least eight half courses, with four from the list required for your chosen major, and a GPA of at least 3.30. UCalgary calls this highly competitive and you must also write the supplementary. Seats are very limited, so treat this as a back-up, not a plan.

For parents
Your child needs strong marks in English, Advanced Functions, Biology and Chemistry, and at least 70% in MHF4U. The supplementary matters too, and UCalgary requires your child to write it alone. Mark March 1, 2027 for both the application and the supplementary, and May 1 for residence.
Students entering the BHSc must also meet an immunization standard, with details sent the summer before they start. Compare similar programs on our McMaster Health Sciences and Calgary Nursing guides, and read our University of Calgary guide.
