Course requirements for BC students

SFU's general rule for BC students is at least five approved academic Grade 12 courses, including English Studies 12 or an equivalent. You also need at least 70% in Language Arts 11, English 12 or an equivalent.

For Criminology, the Grade 12 list names English Studies 12 and English First Peoples 12, plus other courses from SFU's approved academic list. There are no specific Grade 11 course requirements for the program.

SFU looks at all your approved academic Grade 11 and 12 courses, not only a top five or top six.

Course requirements for Ontario students

If you are in Ontario, SFU wants six Grade 12 U or M courses, including ENG4U with at least 70%. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences sets the same course rule for all its programs, including Criminology. The table above lists it.

SFU puts more weight on List A courses. That means your ENG4U, a 4U math or science, and a social studies course matter most.

Check your Grade 11 courses too. You need ENG3U, a Grade 11 math (MCF3M or MCR3U) and a Grade 11 science. Plan both years with our course planner.

The average you need

SFU does not publish a minimum average for Criminology. It publishes historical acceptance ranges from the past three years. For Arts and Social Sciences programs, from Anthropology to World Literature, the range is the low 80s for Canadians and permanent residents and the mid 80s for students on a student visa.

SFU says grades at or above these ranges do not guarantee an offer. Treat the low 80s as a guide. Our Top 6 average calculator gives you a quick check, but remember SFU looks at all approved Grade 11 and 12 courses.

No essay or supplement for Criminology

SFU's Criminology requirements do not ask for a supplemental application, essay or interview. The page notes a supplemental application only for the separate SFU-Exeter Accelerated Law program.

The Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarships do need an application and two references. That is for money, not for admission.

Declaring the major, and staying in it

Admission does not put you straight into the major. You are admitted to the faculty, then you apply for program declaration to the School of Criminology. To do that you need a minimum 2.25 CGPA after 31 lower division units, with at least a C- in each required course.

Those units must include CRIM 101 Introduction to Criminology, CRIM 131 Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, CRIM 135 Introduction to Canadian Law and Legal Institutions and CRIM 220 Research Methods in Criminology, plus 19 units toward group B courses.

To stay in the major you must keep a 2.25 CGPA. The calendar says students below 2.25 cannot enrol in any upper division CRIM course. Upper division access also needs 45 units and program declaration.

What you study

The BA needs at least 120 units, with at least 45 upper division units. Lower division work includes eight group A courses, such as CRIM 103 Psychological Explanations of Criminal and Deviant Behavior and CRIM 104 Sociological Explanations, and six group B courses, including SA 150 Introduction to Sociology and PSYC 100 and PSYC 102.

Group B also needs a statistics course such as STAT 203 and a philosophy course. Upper division includes CRIM 300W, CRIM 320 Quantitative Research Methods, CRIM 321 Qualitative Research Methods and CRIM 330 Criminal Procedure and Evidence.

SFU also lists joint majors that pair Criminology with Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, or Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies, plus certificates in Forensic Studies, Legal Studies and Police Studies.

Co-op

Criminology has a co-op program. The calendar says students alternate full-time study terms with full-time paid work terms, arranged through the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences co-op coordinators.

The CGPA and other entry rules for co-op sit on the Arts and Social Sciences co-op page, not in the calendar. Co-op needs its own online application. SFU's fee table lists co-operative education at $932.08 per term for domestic students.

Tuition for 2026-27

SFU charges by the unit. The Fall 2026 calendar, which covers the start of 2026-27, lists $220.61 per unit for domestic students in regular courses. Criminology courses are not in a premium fee group.

Our estimate: a 15 unit term would be about $3,309 in tuition, and two such terms about $6,618. We multiplied the published rate ourselves. It is not an SFU figure. Student fees, the U-Pass, books and housing are extra, and SFU sets new rates each year.

Scholarships

The Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship is worth $40,000, paid as 8 payments of $5,000. You need a minimum 90% average in the courses required for your program, strength in academics and activities, and two references due January 31, 2027.

SFU's dates page lists December 15, 2026 as the close of USES applications for Fall 2027. Apply early so your references have time.
