Memorial University Computer Science admission requirements: the 70% entry average, the A average major and the internship

You do not get into Computer Science at Memorial straight from high school. You start in the Faculty of Science with at least a 70% average in five Grade 12 courses. After about a year, you apply to the Computer Science major. Memorial says many more students apply than there are spaces. In recent rounds an A average was needed.

How the route works

Computer Science is one of more than 30 majors in Memorial's four year Bachelor of Science. You can also take it in a Bachelor of Arts. Memorial says direct entry to the Faculty of Science depends on meeting its general admission rules, including the right math and lab science courses.

Entry into a major normally needs at least 10 three credit courses, usually at the end of first year. For Computer Science you then apply to the department, and the spots are limited. The department offers a Major, an Honours program, a Minor, joint programs and the Co-operative Internship in Computer Science.

High school requirements for Ontario students

Ontario applicants need an overall average of at least 70% in five Grade 12 courses, with a pass in each. The five areas are English (such as ENG4U), math (MDM4U, MHF4U or MCV4U), a lab science (biology, chemistry, earth and space science or physics), a social studies or language course, and one elective at the 4U or 4M level.

Memorial notes that some programs are competitive and may need a higher average. For Computer Science, the first year math courses are calculus, so MHF4U and MCV4U are much better choices than MDM4U. Plan your year with our course planner and check your marks with our Top 6 average calculator.

Getting into the Computer Science major

To apply to the major you need 24 credit hours. These must include COMP 1001 and COMP 1002 with at least 65% in each, one of MATH 1000 or 1006, one of MATH 1090 or 1001, six credit hours of Critical Reading and Writing courses with at least three in English, and six more credit hours in any subject.

Selection is competitive. Memorial uses whichever is higher: your average across all Memorial courses, or your average in the best three of your last four full time semesters. The department says many more students apply than there are spaces. It says an A average was needed in recent rounds and is likely to be needed again. Memorial does not publish a Computer Science acceptance rate.

Application windows for the major

The department runs three rounds a year. For a fall start in the major, applications open March 1 and close at 11:59 p.m. on May 31. The winter round runs August 1 to 31, and the spring round runs November 1 to January 7. Late applications are not accepted. Decisions come about four to five weeks after the deadline.

What to take in first year

For the BSc, the department suggests English 1090 plus MATH 1090 or 1000 and COMP 1001 in your first semester. In the second semester take another CRW course, MATH 1001 and COMP 1002, plus electives. COMP 1003 is not needed before you apply to the major.

The department suggests taking COMP 1001 and COMP 1002 in different semesters because both have labs. Since the major is ranked on grades, a lighter, focused schedule can be smarter than a heavy one.

Co-op: the Co-operative Internship

Memorial Computer Science does not admit students to co-op from high school. Instead, the Co-operative Internship in Computer Science places students in full time paid jobs of 8, 12 or 16 months. It usually happens between third and fourth year. The Bachelor of Science page also marks Computer Science as a major with a co-op option.

The internship is run by the department, the Faculty of Science co-op office and employers. The page we checked does not list eligibility rules, deadlines or fees, so ask the department about them once you are in the major. Because the internship comes after third year, it adds time to your degree. A 16 month placement, for example, means you finish more than a year later than classmates who skip it, but you graduate with that paid, full time work experience on your record.

Fall 2027 deadlines

High school students applying for fall should apply by March 1 to be considered for early entrance scholarships. For Fall 2027 that means March 1, 2027. Memorial lists August 20 as the document deadline and September 9 as the date applications close. International students should apply at least 12 weeks before the term starts, and earlier is better because of study permits.

Tuition for 2026-27

Memorial charges by the course. Under its tuition framework, new students from fall 2026 pay $675 per three credit hour course if they are from Newfoundland and Labrador or elsewhere in Canada, and $2,250 if they are international. Memorial froze tuition for fall 2026, so the planned 4% rise did not happen. Ten courses come to about $6,750 for Canadians and $22,500 for international students, by our arithmetic.

Fees, books and housing are extra.

Early Scholar entrance awards

Canadian students from outside Newfoundland and Labrador are considered automatically for the Memorial University Early Scholar Program, based on their early admission average. For the Fall 2027 domestic intake, 98% and higher earns $6,000, 95 to 97.9% earns $2,000, 93 to 94.9% earns $1,000, 90 to 92.9% earns $800 and 85 to 89.9% earns $500. You must apply by March 1 of your graduation year.

For parents

A Memorial offer is an offer to Science, not to Computer Science. The real test is first year, when your child needs top marks in COMP 1001, COMP 1002 and math. The department says an A average has been needed recently.

Tuition is low for Canadians, which makes Memorial good value. Still, have a plan B major in mind. Read our Memorial University guide and compare other schools on our computer science requirements across Canada page.
