The average you need

The minimum admission average for Computer Science is 75%. That is higher than UNB's general minimum of 65%. UNB does not publish a competitive average above 75% or an acceptance rate for the BCS.

UNB's admission average is the average of the courses required for your program. When you have more than one course that could count as an elective, UNB picks the ones with the highest marks. This is different from Ontario's usual top six. You can still check your marks with our Top 6 average calculator.

Supplementary application

UNB's computer science pages list no supplementary form, essay, portfolio or interview. You apply online through UNB and your marks decide your file.

The one extra step that matters is the entrance scholarship application. It is separate from admission and is due March 1.

Dates for Fall 2027

UNB lists March 1 for undergraduate scholarship applications and March 31 as the general application deadline for the fall term. The deadline to accept your offer and pay the deposit is May 15.

UNB says it may still accept applications after these dates while seats remain. Apply early anyway if you want scholarship consideration. Compare other schools on our Canadian deadlines page.

Degree options

The Faculty of Computer Science in Fredericton offers the Bachelor of Computer Science and the Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering. It also offers a Diploma in Software Development.

Inside the BCS you can add a cybersecurity specialization. It mixes lecture and lab courses on information and network security with privacy, ethics and legal issues. There is also a combined master's accelerated program.

Concurrent degrees

UNB offers two five year concurrent degrees with the BCS. The BA and BCS lets you pick an arts major. The BCS and BSc lets you major in biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics or physics.

The main computer science page also mentions a concurrent option in geodesy and geomatics, but the concurrent degree page lists only the BA and BSc. Ask UNB to confirm before you plan around geomatics.

Co-op

UNB has an accredited co-op program for BCS, concurrent BCS and Software Engineering students. You apply to co-op in the first semester of first year. Co-op has four to six work terms, giving 16 to 24 months of work experience. With co-op, the degree takes just under five years.

You do not pay tuition during a work term, but there is a work term fee for each four month term. UNB says most co-op students graduate with little or no debt.

Fredericton or Saint John

This guide focuses on the Bachelor of Computer Science at UNB Fredericton, where the Faculty of Computer Science is based. UNB Saint John also teaches computer science and software engineering through its Faculty of Science, Applied Science and Engineering. The Saint John honours degree is called the BScCS.

UNB's admission requirements page lists Computer Science at both campuses. Confirm the Saint John course list and fee sheet if you plan to study there, since fees are posted by campus. You choose your campus when you apply, and you can contact the Faculty of Computer Science at fcs.inquire@unb.ca with questions.

Fast track to a master's degree

Strong students can join the combined master's accelerated program. It links your undergraduate honours thesis with graduate course work, so you can finish a Master of Computer Science within one year after the BCS.

You must be in the BCS honours program in Fredericton or the BScCS honours program in Saint John, with a CGPA of at least 3.5 after three years. Plan for honours early if research or graduate school interests you.

Not a fit for the diploma

UNB's Diploma in Software Development is not a high school option. It is a part time program for working age adults who are not in a degree, and it can be finished in 16 months.

High school students should apply to the BCS or to Software Engineering. Software Engineering is a separate degree with its own requirements, so compare both before you apply.

Entrance scholarships

UNB guarantees an entrance scholarship to high school students with a scholarship average of 80% or more who apply by March 1. The minimum awards are $500 at 80% to 84.9%, $1,000 at 85% to 89.9%, $2,000 at 90% to 94.9%, $4,000 at 95% to 99.9% and $5,000 at 100%.

Keeping your scholarship

UNB says every year is a fresh start for continuing students. To get ongoing support you need at least a 3.7 SGPA, 24 credit hours in the past year, and a new application between January 1 and April 15.

That is a high bar in a demanding program. Plan your first year course load so you can keep your marks up. If you join co-op, remember that work terms change when you are in class, so check how a work term year counts toward the 24 credit hour rule before you rely on renewal.

For parents

UNB's 75% minimum is clear, and there is no supplement. The two dates to watch are March 1 for scholarships and March 31 for the application.

Co-op can help pay for the degree, so ask your child to apply in their first semester. See the UNB university guide for more about campus life.
