Course requirements

Memorial's general admission for Ontario students needs Grade 12 courses in five subject areas, including English (such as ENG4U) and math (MDM4U, MHF4U or MCV4U), with an overall average of at least 70% in those five courses. Engineering asks for more.

Students from outside Newfoundland and Labrador need a Grade 12 advanced math course with at least 75%. You must be eligible for first-year Chemistry 1050, which needs high school chemistry, and Memorial strongly recommends high school physics before Physics 1050. In Ontario terms that points to MHF4U or MCV4U, SCH4U and SPH4U. Plan your courses with our course planner.

Marks above 80%

Memorial says admission to Engineering One and to each major is competitive for a limited number of places. In general, it normally requires grades above 80% in high school advanced math, chemistry, physics and English. Meeting the minimums doesn't guarantee a place.

If you missed high school chemistry or physics but have strong marks in other sciences, Memorial encourages you to apply anyway: you can take introductory courses at Memorial and apply to Engineering One in a later semester. Work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

Engineering One and choosing a major

Engineering One covers math, physics, chemistry and engineering fundamentals and normally takes three semesters. To move into academic term 3 you need at least 55% in each of nine set courses and an overall average of at least 65% in them, within at most two years.

You rank your preferred majors by the first day of the spring semester. With an Engineering One promotion average of 80% or higher, you're guaranteed your first choice. Others are placed competitively. The majors are Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Ocean and Naval Architectural, and Process Engineering.

Co-op is built in

Every Memorial engineering student does co-op. The five-year degree alternates eight academic terms with at least four full-time, paid work terms, starting in second year, so graduates can have up to two full years of professional experience.

Memorial notes that its Ocean and Naval Architectural major is rated one of the top programs of its kind in North America and is the only one with mandatory co-op. The degree is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board, which meets the academic requirements for registration as a professional engineer (P.Eng.).

The seven majors

After Engineering One you specialize in one of seven majors. Civil covers structural design, infrastructure and environmental engineering. Computer covers hardware, software and embedded systems, and Electrical covers power systems, electronics and telecommunications.

Mechanical covers thermal systems, advanced manufacturing and dynamics. Mechatronics covers robotics, automation and intelligent systems. Ocean and Naval Architectural covers ocean system design, marine hydrodynamics and advanced marine vehicles. Process covers clean and green engineering and sustainable processing.

Memorial introduces each discipline during Engineering One so you can choose, and promotion to academic term 3 happens only in the fall semester.

Math placement and English

Students who've taken a differential calculus course can write Memorial's Calculus Placement Test. IB Higher Level Mathematics with a 5, or AP Calculus AB or BC with a 3 or better, earns credit for Mathematics 1000.

You must meet the Faculty of Engineering's English language requirements. Students who meet the general requirement through a test may also have to write an engineering e-proctored test, which needs scores such as IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 or CAEL 70 to qualify.

If you don't get direct entry

Students who aren't eligible for direct entry can take some Engineering One courses, or their prerequisites, at Memorial and apply to Engineering One in a later semester. Those courses include Mathematics 1000, 1001 and 2050, Chemistry 1050, Physics 1050 and 1051, and one first-year English course.

Engineering One has a time limit: six semesters for a fall start, five for winter and four for spring. Students are occasionally admitted beyond Engineering One with advanced standing, decided case by case by the Associate Dean's office.

Deadlines

Memorial's engineering deadline table now shows June 1 for fall entry, with the earlier March 1 date struck out. Late applications are considered as space allows. Winter entry closes October 1 and spring entry February 1.

March 1 still matters. High school students must apply by March 1 of their graduation year to be considered for early entrance scholarships, including the Transforming Our Horizons Entrance Scholarship. Memorial's general application opens September 10 for fall entry.

Tuition and scholarships

Memorial charges tuition per course. Under its current freeze, the fall 2026 rate for Newfoundland and Labrador and other Canadian students is $675 per 3-credit course, the same as 2025-26. International students pay $2,250 per course. The 4% annual increase planned for fall 2026 is on hold during the freeze.

Canadian students from outside Newfoundland and Labrador are considered automatically for the Transforming Our Horizons Entrance Scholarship, based on an early admission average of their best Grade 11 or Grade 12 math, science and English marks finished by the end of Grade 11. For the fall 2026 intake it ranged from $500 at 85% to $6,000 at 98% or higher, and it isn't renewable.

For parents

Memorial calls its tuition among the most competitive in the country, and co-op work terms are paid. The trade-off is a five-year degree and a move to Newfoundland and Labrador.

Apply by March 1 so your child is considered for the entrance scholarship, even though engineering applications are accepted later. The scholarship amount is guaranteed when the early offer is made.
