Course requirements from Ontario

UVic asks Ontario students for Chemistry (SCH3U) and Physics (SPH3U) in Grade 11. In Grade 12 you need English 4U with at least 73%, Advanced Functions 4U with at least 77%, and either an approved 4U science or Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U). Add three more 4U or 4M courses.

Grade 12 Chemistry and Physics are not both required, but first year includes chemistry and physics courses, so taking them helps. Plan your Grade 12 year with our course planner.

Course requirements from BC and Yukon

In Grade 11, BC students need an approved English 11, Pre-calculus 11, Chemistry 11, Physics 11 and a social studies 11 or 12. In Grade 12 you need English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 with at least 73%, and Pre-calculus 12 with at least 77%. You also need an approved science 12 or Calculus 12, and an approved academic 12.

Alberta and other provinces have matching lists on the same UVic page.

The 85% estimated admission average

UVic's estimated admission average for Engineering is a minimum of 85%, based on the required Grade 12 courses. Software Engineering shows the same 85%. UVic says these estimates come from recent cycles and the real average may be higher because of competition and limited space. Meeting the minimums does not guarantee admission.

UVic doesn't publish an Engineering acceptance rate. Our University of Victoria acceptance rate page covers what it does share. Use our Top 6 average calculator to check your marks, but remember UVic uses its own required courses.

Software Engineering and choosing a field

High school students select Engineering: Year 1 entry (BEng). After one year of full-time study you declare a field: Biomedical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical or Software Engineering. Software Engineering leads to a separate degree, the Bachelor of Software Engineering (BSEng).

Placement depends on your grades, your ranked choices and the spaces in each program. To declare you need second-year standing (12.0 units), at least a C+ average and no grade below C in required courses. When a program has more demand than seats, placement goes by GPA. For students declaring in 2026, the portal opened March 2, 2026 and closed April 30, with results by May 31.

Expanded Qualifications

Engineering has no required supplementary application, interview or Casper test. Academic performance is the main criterion. UVic has an optional Expanded Qualifications category for a limited number of students graduating from Canadian high schools.

You only submit it if you are worried your grades may not be enough, and you must still meet the minimums. Engineering and Computer Science has its own documents for it.

How to apply and key dates

Apply through EducationPlannerBC. The fee is $89.50 if all your transcripts come from Canada. Most degree programs close January 31 for September entry. UVic lists these as annual fixed dates without a year, so for Fall 2027 plan on January 31, 2027.

Students who send grades by early December can be considered for early admission. Engineering also has a summer entry for high school graduates only, with a December 31 deadline. Some programs stay open after the deadline but can close without warning.

Required co-op

Co-op is mandatory for every UVic engineering program, including Software Engineering. You are enrolled automatically, with no application. You must complete four work terms and the ENGR 130 course on professional practice. UVic lists an average monthly salary of $4,205 for an undergraduate engineering work term.

You start paying the co-op fee in first year, in eight installments. UVic's two pages don't match. The co-op page lists $403.78 per installment for Canadian students and $848.37 for international students. The tuition estimator lists $412 and $882 a term. Please confirm the current amount with UVic.

Tuition and costs

UVic's tuition estimator, at rates in force May 1, 2026, lists $3,620 a term, or $7,240 for two terms, for Canadian students in Engineering and Computer Science. Year 1 international students pay $18,733 a term, or $37,466 for two terms.

Engineering Student Society, student society, athletics, bus pass, dental and health fees are extra. The estimate leaves out housing, food and books.

Entrance scholarships

UVic's entrance scholarships are automatic and based on your admission average. For 2027-28, Canadian citizens and permanent residents with 90% or more (or 32 IB points) get a one-time $1,500 to $5,000. International students with an A- or equivalent get a one-time $15,000.

What you take in first year

UVic's first-year planner for 2026-27 shows a two-term schedule. In fall you take CSC 110, ENGR 110, ENGR 130, MATH 100 or 109, MATH 110 and PHYS 110, for 9.0 units. In spring you take CHEM 150, ENGR 120, ENGR 141 (or CSC 115 for Computer or Software Engineering), MATH 101 and PHYS 111 (or a natural science elective for Software Engineering), for 8.5 units.

The summer after first year is either a co-op term or a term off. A three-term schedule is also offered, which may need you on campus in summer.

First-year residence

For 2027-28, UVic guarantees residence to students who graduate from high school in 2027, come straight from high school, apply to UVic by January 31 and apply for residence by February 15. The application opened October 5, 2026, with a $50 non-refundable fee.

In 2026-27, a double dorm room with a meal plan costs $14,574 and a single costs $16,666 or more. Need-based Residence and Meal Plan Bursaries of up to $1,500 are open to Canadian students.

For parents

UVic Engineering decides offers on required courses, with an estimate of at least 85%. Your child needs Grade 11 Chemistry and Physics, which is easy to miss. Software Engineering is chosen after first year, by GPA when seats are short, so first-year marks matter.

Co-op is built in, with four paid work terms and fees starting in first year. Ontario families apply through EducationPlannerBC, not the OUAC. Compare other schools on our engineering requirements across Canada page and read our University of Victoria guide.
