Memorial University business admission requirements: direct entry to the BComm at 70%, co-op after Year One Commerce

Course requirements

Ontario students need five Grade 12 courses in set areas. One English (such as ENG4U). One math: MDM4U, MHF4U or MCV4U. One lab science: SBI4U, SCH4U, SES4U or SPH4U. One social studies or language course. Then one more 4U or 4M course as an elective.

Business also asks that you be ready for a first university math course: Math 1000, 1005, 1090 or 109A/B. A strong Grade 12 math mark helps here. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The average you need

Memorial needs an overall average of at least 70% in the five Grade 12 courses that meet those subject areas. That is a five-course average, not a top six. The business pages do not list a higher average for the regular BComm.

Memorial does not publish an acceptance rate or a past cut-off for business. Use our Top 6 average calculator to track your grades, then work out your five-course Memorial average.

How to apply

You apply on Memorial's own application, not through OUAC. Choose the Faculty of Business Administration and the Bachelor of Commerce. There is no essay or interview for the regular BComm.

Memorial's application for fall opens September 10 of the year before. The fall priority deadline is March 1. Documents are due August 20.

Dates for Fall 2027

Apply by March 1, 2027 for the BComm. That same date is the cut-off for early entrance scholarships for high school students. Memorial encourages early applications so there is time for advising and registration.

If you later want co-op, the fall deadline to apply to the BComm (Co-op) is May 15, after your first year. Compare dates with our Canadian deadlines page.

Year One Commerce

All business students start with a common first year called Year One Commerce. It is ten courses, or 30 credit hours. In fall you take Math 1090, 1000 or 1005, Economics 1010, an English course, Business 1000 and a non-business elective.

In winter you take Economics 1020, an English or Critical Reading and Writing course, one of Business 2111, 2205 or 2600, and two non-business electives. All ten courses are required before you can apply to the co-op BComm.

The co-op BComm

The co-op BComm has three paid, full-time work terms, and Memorial reports a 100% placement rate for work terms. It is a structured, full-time program that normally takes five years and 45 courses. It was the first business degree in Canada to be accredited by CEWIL, the national co-op body.

To apply you need all of Year One Commerce, an overall average of at least 65%, and at least 60% over your last 30 credit hours. You must show you can handle 15 credit hours in one semester, and you normally need 15 credit hours at Memorial. Memorial says co-op is competitive and the minimums do not guarantee a spot. No fee figure is posted on the co-op page we checked.

The regular BComm

The regular BComm is 40 courses, or 120 credit hours. You can study full or part time, on campus, online or both. You can even finish the whole degree online with careful planning.

You can choose focus areas, study abroad and take non-credit professional development seminars. Memorial's Faculty of Business was the first in Atlantic Canada accredited by AACSB. Memorial also offers joint degrees with Music and with Arts, and a BBA at Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook.

When the co-op work terms happen

Memorial's co-op office lays out the five-year co-op BComm like this. Years one and two are academic terms only. From year three to year five, academic terms alternate with work terms, and you complete three paid work terms in total.

Work terms can be in private, public or non-profit organizations. Memorial publishes a Business Co-op Handbook with the details, and questions go to the business co-op office. Since you only enter co-op after first year, plan to ask about the handbook early in Year One Commerce.

Joint degrees

Since Fall 2022, Memorial has offered two joint degrees with business: a Bachelor of Commerce with a Bachelor of Music, and a Bachelor of Commerce (Co-operative) with a Bachelor of Arts.

Memorial says joint degrees let you study two subjects at the same time, and with careful planning you may take fewer courses in total than if you earned the two degrees one after the other. Each has its own program page and rules, so check them before you pick your first-year electives.

Tuition for 2026-27

Memorial charges by the course. Under its tuition framework, new students pay $675 per three credit hour course if they are from Newfoundland and Labrador or elsewhere in Canada, and $2,250 if they are international. Memorial froze tuition for fall 2026.

Ten courses come to about $6,750 for Canadians and $22,500 for international students, by our math. Other fees and residence are extra. Co-op students study for longer, so plan for more terms of tuition in the five-year co-op degree.

Scholarships

Memorial's Early Scholar Program uses your early admission average. For the Fall 2027 domestic intake, 98% and higher earns $6,000, 95% to 97.9% earns $2,000 and 93% to 94.9% earns $1,000.

You must apply for admission by March 1 of your graduation year to be considered. The Faculty of Business also lists its own undergraduate awards, including work term awards for co-op students.

For parents

The 70% bar and low tuition make Memorial a realistic and affordable option. The catch is co-op. Your child cannot enter co-op from high school and has to earn it with first-year grades.

Help your child take first year seriously, and apply by March 1 for scholarships. Read our Memorial university guide for more.
