Course requirements

High school applicants need Memorial's general admission requirements plus six set courses: Grade 11 and Grade 12 Biology, Grade 12 Chemistry, English and math, and a Grade 12 social science or modern language. If you're from outside Newfoundland and Labrador and don't have the social science or language course, you take another Grade 12 science instead, other than biology or chemistry.

Memorial's general admission for Ontario students also asks for an overall average of at least 70% in five Grade 12 subject areas. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The 85% target and conditional offers

Memorial bases your admission average on the six required courses, using marks up to the end of Grade 11. To be competitive, it suggests a Grade 11 average of 85% or higher across those courses, and says the recommended average can change from year to year.

Every offer to a high school student is conditional because final Grade 12 marks aren't ready when offers go out. Memorial reviews final grades each June, and if your average across the six courses falls below 70%, the offer is revoked. Work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

Residency priority

Memorial gives priority to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, but encourages out-of-province and international applicants to apply. Selection is based mainly on academic performance.

Up to three seats a year are reserved for applicants with Indigenous membership who meet the requirements but aren't among the top-ranked candidates. You check the box on the application and send documentation by the document deadline.

Memorial also offers LPN Bridging for licensed practical nurses and an accelerated option, which have their own admission pages.

How to apply

Choose the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Collaborative) on Memorial's undergraduate application. For Fall 2027, the application deadline is January 20, 2027 and the document deadline is February 3, 2027.

A personal statement is optional, and a reference isn't required, though the committee can ask for one. Out-of-province students send their transcript to the end of Grade 11 with the application, then an official final transcript in June or July. Upload documents as PDFs, and watch your MUNmail account, where decisions are sent.

Clinical hours, not co-op

Memorial's nursing pages describe clinical practice rather than co-op. The four-year option lists a minimum of 1,500 clinical hours, and Memorial's nursing overview says graduates have more than 1,600 hours of patient care, among the most of any Canadian program.

The program is accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing. Memorial asks every applicant to review the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Nurses' entry-level competencies before choosing nursing.

What first year looks like

First year mixes nursing courses with English and Human Biosciences 1430. Upper years add non-nursing electives such as psychology, statistics, philosophy and a social science, which you can take before entering if you're already at university.

Satellite sites in Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor and Happy Valley-Goose Bay have smaller classes. Students there can receive tuition grants of $2,000 a semester for the first two years, $8,000 in total, with no return-in-service obligation for that funding, but they can't transfer to St. John's.

If you've started university or study abroad

Students coming from Memorial or another post-secondary school apply to the same four-year option. If you don't have the required high school courses, you need Biology 1001 and 1002, a first-year chemistry course and one university math course (not statistics). Both biology courses must come from the same level, high school or university.

You can also complete some of the program's non-nursing courses before you start, and they count toward the degree: English critical reading and writing, Human Biosciences 1430, Biology 3053, Psychology 1000, a statistics course, and courses in social science, philosophy or religious studies. Taking them doesn't guarantee admission.

International applicants who don't meet the prerequisites are advised to study at Memorial for two semesters first, completing Biology 1001 and 1002, a chemistry course and three credit hours of math, then apply as current Memorial students.

Careers

Tuition and scholarships

Memorial charges tuition per course. Under its tuition freeze, the fall 2026 rate for Newfoundland and Labrador and other Canadian students is $675 per 3-credit course, the same as 2025-26, and $2,250 for international students.

Canadian students from outside the province are considered automatically for the Transforming Our Horizons Entrance Scholarship if they apply by March 1. For the fall 2026 intake it ranged from $500 at an 85% early average to $6,000 at 98% or higher. Nursing's January 20 deadline comes first, so you'll meet that date anyway.

For parents

Memorial decides on Grade 11 marks, so your child's Grade 11 Biology and the other required courses matter more than they would at many Ontario schools. Then the final Grade 12 average must stay at 70% or above.

If you live outside Newfoundland and Labrador, apply knowing residents get priority. A satellite site can be a strong option, with smaller classes and tuition grants.
