Which SFU engineering program

Engineering Science is a Bachelor of Applied Science in the Faculty of Applied Sciences. By third year you choose one of five options: Biomedical, Computer, Electronics, Engineering Physics or Systems Engineering.

SFU also lists Mechatronic Systems Engineering and Sustainable Energy Engineering as separate programs with their own admission rules. This guide covers all three.

Course requirements

From BC, Engineering Science needs English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12, Chemistry 12, Physics 12, and Pre-Calculus 12 or Calculus 12, within at least five approved Grade 12 courses. You also need 70% or higher in Language Arts 11 or English 12.

From Ontario, you need six Grade 12 U or M courses. For Engineering Science these include ENG4U at 70%, and MHF4U, SCH4U and SPH4U at 75% each, plus two more from SFU's lists. Mechatronic Systems and Sustainable Energy need 70% in those courses. SFU recommends Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) for all three. You also need Grade 11 English, a Grade 11 math and a Grade 11 science. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The mid 80s range

SFU publishes historical grade ranges from the past three years. For Engineering Sciences and Mechatronic Systems Engineering, the range is mid 80s for Canadian students and for students on a study permit. Sustainable Energy Engineering is also mid 80s for Canadian students.

SFU says grades at or above these ranges don't guarantee an offer. It reviews all approved Grade 11 and 12 courses, with more weight on List A courses for Ontario students. Work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

Mandatory co-op

Co-op is optional at SFU for most students, but it is mandatory in Engineering Science, Mechatronic Systems Engineering and Sustainable Energy Engineering. Work terms are paid, full time, and at least 12 weeks or 420 hours.

SFU charges tuition for each four-month work term: $932.08 in 2026-27. Work term units don't count toward the units you need for your degree. A four-year degree with a co-op designation needs three completed work terms.

Tuition

SFU charges tuition by the unit. In 2026-27, domestic students pay $220.61 per unit for most courses and $242.67 per unit for 200, 300 and 400 level courses in the three engineering schools. International students who started in 2024-25 or later pay $1,262.88 and $1,348.19 per unit.

How the Engineering Science degree runs

SFU's calendar describes Engineering Science as a demanding program aimed at the superior student. You start with a core of pure, applied and engineering sciences, then move into your option. The honours degree can be finished in nine academic terms plus at least three co-op terms.

The program also includes courses on the social impact of technology, finance, management, design methods and entrepreneurship. A communications course runs through the whole degree. You need a C- or better in prerequisite courses to take the next engineering science course.

After first year, students usually alternate study terms and work terms. At least two of the three required work terms must be in industry. One can be a special co-op term, such as research or an entrepreneurial term, with the co-op office's permission.

There is also an optional non-technical work term, ENSC 194, which students often take after their first two study terms. It does not count toward the three required work terms. The co-op office also looks for chances for students to do their honours thesis in an industry setting, on or off campus.

The program begins each fall, although admitted students may enter in any term. For questions about admission to the school, SFU lists asadvise@sfu.ca.

Transferring into Engineering Science

SFU students in other programs can apply for an internal transfer. In the term before they apply, they need at least 12 units and a CGPA of 2.5 or higher. They are then ranked on an engineering-related GPA from at least three set courses in math, computing and physics. SFU says it typically expects this GPA to be as high as 2.8, and the bar depends on seats.

Students from other colleges or universities need at least 24 units of transferable courses, including set math, computing and physics courses. Entry is competitive for both routes.

Entrance scholarships

The Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship needs its own application. For Fall 2027 it opens October 1, 2026 and closes December 15, 2026. You need at least a 90% average, or 31 IB points without bonus points, in the courses required for your program.

SFU says domestic awards range from $20,000 up to $60,000. Winners also get priority access to residence and early course enrolment. SFU may add a living allowance for exceptional students with financial need.

The Uggla Family Scholarship gives up to $170,000 over eight full-time terms to ten Canadian students a year who face major financial barriers. It asks for a financial need assessment, two short written statements, a 750-word essay and two letters of support.

Residence

First-year students can live in the East and West Towers or the North Towers on the Burnaby campus, and some first years live in McTaggart-Cowan Hall or Shell House. More than 1,900 undergraduates live on campus.

You can apply to residence before SFU admits you. Housing offers go out only after you accept your offer of admission, in order of when you applied to residence. Apply early if you want a room.

For parents

SFU's January 31 deadline comes later than many Ontario dates, but the entrance scholarship closes December 15, 2026. Plan both.

Mandatory co-op means paid work terms. Budget for the work term fee each time.
