Which Trent program is the environmental science one

Trent's program page is titled Environmental & Resource Science / Studies. It offers a Bachelor of Science in Environmental & Resource Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental & Resource Studies. The B.Sc. is the environmental science degree. The B.A. leans toward environmental law, planning, policy and business. The program page lists OUAC codes RSV for the science degree and RAV for the studies degree.

Trent also runs a separate Bachelor of Environmental Science and Studies (B.E.S.S.), named Environmental Science & Studies. That is a different degree with a 75% overall average. This guide covers the ERS B.Sc. and B.A.

Course requirements

You need an OSSD with at least six Grade 12 4U or 4M courses, including any program prerequisites. ENG4U must be 60% or more.

For the B.Sc., Trent requires SBI4U, SCH4U and a 4U math. The B.A. has no extra subject requirements beyond ENG4U. If you're unsure which degree you want, taking biology, chemistry and a 4U math keeps both open. Plan your Grade 12 year with our course planner.

B.Sc. or B.A.: which one to apply for

Trent says the B.Sc. offers an advanced scientific understanding of the environment and builds industry level skills. B.A. students explore topics in environmental law, planning, policy, or business and the environment.

Pick the B.Sc. if you enjoy lab and field science and want to work as an environmental scientist or consultant. Pick the B.A. if you're drawn to policy, planning or advocacy. Both share the same first year ERSC courses, and both can be paired with another subject as a joint major.

The program page lists Fall, Winter and Spring/Summer start terms, and full time or part time study. Most high school students start in the fall.

Accreditation and the fast track master's

Trent says the program is accredited by ECO Canada, the Environmental Careers Organization. The department says graduates can state on their resume that they finished an ECO Canada accredited program.

For parents and how it compares

The entry bar is moderate. Your child needs a 70% average and the three B.Sc. prerequisites. The main trade off is no co-op, so work experience comes through internships, field courses and research instead.

Trent's careers list includes environmental scientist, environmental consultant, remediation specialist and park warden. If your child likes lab science, compare our Trent Forensic Science guide. For the wider picture, see our Trent admissions overview.
