Which degree Laurier offers
Laurier's economics degree is a Bachelor of Arts, offered by the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics on the Waterloo campus. Laurier says the program is AACSB-accredited. It runs four years, full time or part time, and you can start in September or January.
On OUAC you choose code UZE, then select your subject of major interest and any program enhancement. The four majors are Economics, Economics and Accounting, Economics and Financial Management, and the newest, Economics and Data Analytics.
Laurier's BBA is a separate program with OUAC code UB. It lists a high 80s range, compared with the low 80s for economics. Read our Laurier BBA page if you are weighing the two.

Course requirements
Ontario students need English at 70% and Advanced Functions at 70%. You also need one of Calculus and Vectors or Data Management at 60%. Laurier says all prerequisite courses count in your admission average, including English.
That means you need two Grade 12 math courses, so plan both early and check with your school how they fit your timetable. If you plan on the Data Analytics major, Calculus and Vectors is useful prep, since first year includes calculus and linear algebra. Plan your timetable with our course planner.

The average you need
Laurier lists an average admission range in the low 80s for all four economics majors. It does not publish an exact cut-off, an admitted average or an acceptance rate for economics.
Because English and both maths count in your average, a weak math mark pulls the whole number down. Aim for the mid 80s if you can. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

The Applicant Background Summary
Economics has no required supplementary application. Laurier does invite every applicant to send an Applicant Background Summary (ABS) form about activities and achievements outside class. Laurier says the form is optional but highly recommended, and it may be used for admission decisions.
Laurier suggests sending it within two weeks of applying. For Fall 2027, the last day is April 25, 2027. You fill it in once, even if you apply to several Laurier programs. A separate form lets you explain special circumstances that affected your grades.

What first year looks like
Every major starts with EC120 Introduction to Microeconomics and EC140 Introduction to Macroeconomics. The Economics major adds MA129 Introductory Calculus for Business and Social Sciences or MA103 Calculus I, plus 3.5 non-economics elective credits.
The Accounting and Financial Management majors add BU111 Understanding the Business Environment and BU127 Introduction to Financial Accounting. The Data Analytics major adds programming, DATA100, Calculus I and linear algebra. Upper-year options include sports economics, health economics and environmental economics.

Minors and the Management Minor
You can add a Management Minor when you apply. Laurier calls it a direct-entry, 4.0-credit option covering the core areas of business. You pick it as your program enhancement on OUAC.
Other popular minors for economics students include Data Analytics, International Policy and Legal Studies. You can plan other minors with an academic advisor in first year. The Economics major can also be combined with another major.

Co-op
Co-op is optional and you don't choose it on OUAC. You apply for admission to co-op in first year and may get an admission interview early in second year. If admitted, you take the Fundamentals of Co-operative Education course for help with job applications and interviews.
Economics co-op students complete three four-month work terms, or one eight-month and one four-month term. Each paid work term lasts 12 to 16 weeks. Laurier reports a 99% employment rate for co-op students in 2025/26.
The Data Analytics page calls it a four-year co-op program, but its co-op section also says you apply for co-op at the end of first year. Confirm with Laurier how co-op works for your major.

Tuition for 2026-27
Laurier's economics pages show one year, or two terms, of full-time costs at 2026/27 rates. Domestic tuition is $6,180. Student fees are $2,334, or $4,219 with co-op. Textbooks are about $1,500. International students pay $39,112 in tuition and $3,282 in student fees, or $5,167 with co-op.
Laurier says fees are subject to increase. Our estimate, not Laurier's: a domestic first year without co-op comes to about $10,014 before housing.

Entrance scholarships
Laurier assesses you for entrance scholarships automatically, based on your admission average as of July 2027. For domestic students, the grid for September 2027 entry lists $2,500 for 85.0 to 89.9%, $3,000 for 90.0 to 94.9% and $4,000 for 95% or higher.
The 95% award is the President's Gold Scholarship. It renews at $4,000 a year if you keep an annual GPA of 10.5 or higher over at least 5.0 credits. Economics students qualify from 85%, while BBA students start at 90%. See our scholarship finder for more.

How it compares
If you want a business degree with economics inside it, the Laurier BBA is the closer fit, but its range is higher. If you want economics with heavy math, compare our Waterloo Economics page. For an Ottawa option with its own economics degree, see our Carleton Economics page.

For parents
The key planning point is math. Your child needs Advanced Functions at 70% and a second Grade 12 math at 60%, and both count in the average. Co-op is a separate application in first year, so it is not guaranteed at entry.
Laurier lists careers such as economist, financial analyst, data analyst, policy analyst and actuary, and notes some need more training. Read our Laurier guide for campus context.
