UNB engineering admission requirements: a 75% minimum, 70% in four core courses and a common first year
UNB engineering asks for English, math, Chemistry and Physics. You need at least 70% in each one. Your average must be at least 75%. Meeting the minimum does not promise a spot. All students start in a common first year. You pick your field after first year, and that choice is based on your grades. There is no essay for high school students.

Course requirements
Ontario students need English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) and Physics (SPH4U). UNB wants at least 70% in each. Calculus and Vectors (MCB4U) or MGA4U can stand in for MHF4U, also at 70%. You also need one elective from UNB's group 1, 2 or 4 list with at least 60%.
New Brunswick students need both Pre-Calculus A 120 and Pre-Calculus B 120, plus English 122, Chemistry 122 and Physics 122. UNB says a higher course can replace a required one, such as Calculus 120 in place of Pre-Calculus A and B. Plan your senior year with our course planner.

The average you need
The minimum admission average is 75% in every province UNB lists. UNB says engineering admission is competitive. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a spot. UNB does not publish a typical admitted average, a cut-off or an acceptance rate for engineering.
Your admission average is the average of the courses UNB requires for your program. If you have more than one allowed elective, UNB picks the one with the highest grade. If a Grade 12 course is not done yet, UNB uses the Grade 11 course to estimate it. It does not accept midterm grades. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator, then work out the five course average UNB uses.

Supplementary application
UNB lists extra forms for education, nursing, kinesiology and some other programs. Engineering is not on that list. High school students applying to engineering send grades, not essays or interviews.
After you apply, UNB tells you which documents it needs and how to send them. Transcripts must come straight from your school. The application fee is $65.

Dates for Fall 2027
You apply directly through the UNB portal, not OUAC. The general deadline for fall entry is March 31. UNB says all programs accept applications after their deadline while seats remain. Documents are also due by March 31 unless your program says otherwise.
Scholarship applications are due March 1. You must accept your offer and pay your deposit by May 15. These dates come from UNB's current dates page. Confirm them for the 2027 cycle. Compare other schools on our Canadian deadlines page.

The common first year
Every engineering student starts with the same first year. In the fall you take Programming for Engineers, Earth Sciences and Sustainability, Cornerstone Design Principles, Mechanics I, Calculus I and Linear Algebra. In the winter you take Chemistry for Engineers, Mechanics II, Calculus II, Waves and Electromagnetism and two design courses.
You get a taste of all nine fields before you choose. UNB says entry to a field such as Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical or Software Engineering is competitive. It depends on your first year grades.

Fredericton or Saint John
First year runs on both campuses. In year two, Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical are offered in Fredericton or Saint John. Engineering Physics, Geological, Geomatics and Software are only in Fredericton. Environmental Engineering is taken in Saint John.
For years three and four, every field except Environmental Engineering finishes in Fredericton. So a Saint John start usually means a move later on.

Co-op
Co-op is optional. You can join after your first term grades come out in January of first year. You go to an orientation session and start a professional development course.
You can do up to six work terms, which adds up to 24 months of work. Finish at least three and you graduate with a Co-operative Education Designation. Past employers include NB Power, Irving Oil, Stantec and Imperial Oil. International work terms are also possible.

Tuition for 2026-27
UNB posts fee sheets for 2026-2027. At Fredericton, Canadian engineering students pay $13,038 in tuition for two terms. With student fees, health and dental plans, the total is $14,244.50. Software and Geological Engineering cost less: $12,072.50 in tuition, or $13,279 in total.
International students in most engineering fields pay $25,871 in tuition, or $27,722 with fees. First year students also pay an $80 orientation fee.

Scholarships
UNB promises a scholarship to high school students with a scholarship average of 80% or more. You must send the scholarship application to get it. One form puts you in the running for most UNB awards.
Your scholarship average is your admission average plus bonus points for enriched courses such as AP or IB, if you scored 75% or more in them. You can earn up to four bonus points. The average is not rounded, so 79.9% stays 79.9%.

After you apply
If a required Grade 12 course is still in progress when UNB reviews your file, it uses the matching Grade 11 course to estimate your mark. So strong Grade 11 marks in math, Chemistry and Physics matter. Keep your grades up after an offer, because UNB still needs your final marks. A final grade of ENR cannot be used to meet a course requirement.
If you are admitted to the Fredericton campus, the residence application comes in your admission package. In Saint John, you can apply for residence when you apply to UNB. The residence fee is due May 15, the same day as your deposit. In spring, UNB runs SOAR events where new students meet their faculty and register for courses. Room assignments come out on July 15.

For parents
A 75% minimum is lower than at many Ontario engineering schools. But UNB is clear that it is competitive, and the field your child wants depends on first year grades.
Look at the total cost, not just tuition. Fees, residence and a possible move between campuses all add up. Co-op pay can help. Compare with other schools on our engineering requirements across Canada page and the UNB guide.
