Residence and Campus Fit

UNB residence rates by campus — and the guarantee that does not exist

Neither UNB campus publishes a first-year residence guarantee. Saint John says it plainly: if you apply and the residence is full, you will be placed on a waitlist, new students are handled first come first served, and most years the residence fills by the end of May. Fredericton discloses that in 2023 residence began operating with a waitlist by the end of May. Rates and buildings also differ completely between the two campuses, so read the row that matches your campus.

Meal plans for 2026-2027

Infinite Plan

$6,262 for the year

Includes $100 in dining cash. Priced identically on both campuses at $3,181 in the fall and $3,081 in the winter.

Infinite Plus Plan

$6,462 for the year

Includes $300 in dining cash.

Infinite Max Plan

$6,712 for the year

Includes $550 in dining cash.

Where a plan is not required

Fredericton exemptions only

The Fredericton fees page heads Neill House and Elizabeth Parr Johnston with no meal plan required, and Magee House is separately described as optional. Saint John states plainly that a meal plan is required for all students staying in residence.

Fredericton deposit

$800

Non-refundable, paid by credit card with the application, and deducted from the total academic year residence fees rather than charged on top.

Assignment timing

Apply by March 30

Fredericton states that applications with the fee in by March 30 receive a fall room assignment by June 1; the central dates page lists July 15.

Communication fee gap

$430 vs $250

Both campuses bundle $70 in house dues into the yearly rate, but Fredericton adds a $430 communication fee against Saint John's $250.

Official-source conflict

UNB's own pages disagree about Neill House and about how many residences exist

The Fredericton fees page heads the Neill House rate block with the words no meal plan required. The Fredericton residence listing marks Neill House as Meal Plan: Required. Both pages are live. A meal plan is a $6,262 decision, so confirm in writing before choosing Neill on that basis. Separately, UNB publishes four different residence counts — 12, 13, 15 and 16 — across four live pages. Saint John's count of three is consistent everywhere; the Fredericton number is not.

Current policy

Neither campus guarantees first-year residence

Confirmed

No UNB page reviewed for this guide publishes a first-year residence guarantee. Saint John states plainly that if you apply and the residence is full, you will be placed on a waitlist, that new students are handled on a first-come-first-served basis, and that most years the residence fills by the end of May. Fredericton's apply page discloses that in 2023, Residence began operating with a waitlist by the end of May.

This is a real difference from universities that publish a dated first-year guarantee. Apply for residence as early as the campus allows rather than waiting for the May 15 confirmation date.

Current buildings

What the buildings actually are

Confirmed

Fredericton's traditional houses are Aitken (capacity 86), Bridges (97), Harrison (97), Joy W. Kidd (162), Lady Beaverbrook (64), Lady Dunn Hall (88, co-ed with an all-female section), MacKenzie (99), Neill (94) and Neville-Jones (94), plus Tibbits Hall (127). Elizabeth Parr-Johnston is suite style with 68 furnished suites and is limited to graduate students and undergraduates in third year or later, and Magee House offers 101 unfurnished apartments for adult learners, graduate students, third-year-and-later undergraduates and students with families. Saint John's Mackay Residence has 164 standard suites plus three premium plus bedrooms.

Neill House and Neville-Jones House are described by UNB as mirror-image twins. Elizabeth Parr-Johnston and Magee are not first-year options.

Meal plan prices are identical on both campuses

Latest available

The Infinite Plan is $6,262 yearly and includes $100 in dining cash, the Infinite Plus Plan is $6,462 and includes $300, and the Infinite Max Plan is $6,712 and includes $550. Both campus fee pages publish the same three prices, split $3,181, $3,381 or $3,631 in the fall and $3,081 in the winter. Winter-only students are charged and receive half of the dining cash associated with each plan.

The meal plan is roughly the same size as the room charge, so a Saint John double at $5,550 plus the Infinite Plan is closer to $11,812 than to $5,550.

Neill House meal plan status is contradicted

Official-source conflict

The Fredericton residence fees page heads the Neill House rate block with the words no meal plan required. The Fredericton traditional residences page lists Neill House with Meal Plan: Required. Both are live first-party UNB pages and they say opposite things. Saint John has no such ambiguity: its fees page states that a meal plan is required for all students staying in residence.

A meal plan is a $6,262 decision. Do not choose Neill House on the assumption you can skip it — confirm in writing with Fredericton residence services first.

UNB publishes four different residence counts

Official-source conflict

The Fredericton residence landing page says home to 13 residence buildings. The Fredericton residence listing says choose from one of the 12 fantastic residences on our Fredericton campus. The student life page says 15 different residences. The living-in-residence page says 16 residences: 13 on the Fredericton campus and 3 on the Saint John campus.

The browsable Fredericton listing enumerates twelve buildings. Saint John's count of three is consistent everywhere, so trust that one and treat the Fredericton number as approximate.

Fredericton residence deposit

Latest available

Students applying to residence in Fredericton, excluding Magee House, must pay an $800 non-refundable residence application deposit by credit card at the time they submit the application. UNB states the deposit is deducted from the total academic year residence fees rather than charged on top, and that the remaining balance is divided between the fall and winter semesters.

Saint John residence deposit amount

2027 pending

Saint John states that a residence deposit is required before a student can be accepted into residence, but does not publish the amount on either the residence admissions page or the fees page.

Every Saint John room type shows a consistent gap between its total-including-deposit figure and its yearly figure, but UNB does not label that gap as the deposit. Ask Saint John residence services rather than assuming the Fredericton amount.

Residence application and move-in timeline

Latest available

Fredericton states that all students who submit their application and fee by March 30 will receive their fall term room assignment by June 1, while the central dates page lists July 15 for room assignments being made available and April 1 as the residence application fee deadline. Saint John requires returning students to re-apply by March 1, after which the roommate and room are not guaranteed. The 2026-2027 Fredericton calendar sets September 3 move-in for students new to residence and September 7 for returning students.

The March 30 and April 1 dates are one day apart on two different UNB pages. Work to March 30.

A published Saint John rate carries an inconsistent label

Official-source conflict

The Saint John fees page lists an apartment rate under Sir James Dunn labelled per month, per person, but publishes it alongside the other yearly rates with a per-semester split, and the Sir James Dunn building page describes only single and double room types without mentioning apartments at all.

Read the apartment line as an annual figure consistent with the surrounding table, but confirm before budgeting on it — the per-month label would change the number by an order of magnitude.

Two campuses, two student communities

Current

Two separate student communities

Confirmed

Fredericton has the UNB Students' Union, CHSR-FM — described as established in 1961 and Fredericton's only campus radio station — and The Brunswickan, described as established in 1867 and Canada's oldest official student publication. Saint John has the UNB Saint John Student Representative Council with over 50 clubs and societies, CFMH 107.3, and The Baron, a bi-weekly newspaper.

Founding, motto, and the age claim

Confirmed

UNB's quick facts page states that UNB is the oldest English-language university in Canada, that the Fredericton campus was established in 1785 and the Saint John campus in 1964, and that the motto is Sapere Aude, meaning Dare to be wise. The history page adds that UNB began with a petition presented to Governor Thomas Carleton on Dec. 13, 1785, that on April 13, 1859 the act creating the secular, provincial University of New Brunswick was passed, and describes UNB as the first English-language university in Canada.

UNB uses both oldest and first in different places. Both are its own wording; neither is independently adjudicated here.
