The average you need

UNB lists a minimum admission average of 75% for Ontario applicants to nursing. It does not post a competitive average, a mean or an acceptance rate for the program. Meeting 75% lets UNB consider you. It does not promise a seat.

Higher level courses, such as IB or AP, count for admission and may earn bonus points toward your scholarship average. Work out your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

Casper and other extra steps

UNB's nursing pages say applicants to UNB's nursing programs must complete the Casper test. The general admission requirements page does not repeat this, so plan to write Casper and confirm the date with UNB.

Before clinical work, you give proof of immunizations, current First Aid and CPR, and a yearly criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening. UNB also has the Nutsihpiluwewicik (Indigenous) Admission Pathway. First Nation, Inuit and Métis applicants can choose a wholistic review by an Indigenous Selection Committee.

Dates for Fall 2027

UNB's important dates page lists February 15 as the application deadline for the Bachelor of Nursing. The general fall deadline is March 31, but nursing closes earlier. Entrance scholarship applications are due March 1.

The page does not print a year, so treat February 15, 2027 as your target and confirm with UNB. Admitted students accept and pay the deposit by May 15. See our Canadian deadlines page.

Campuses and program options

The four year Bachelor of Nursing runs at UNB Fredericton and UNB Saint John. Saint John also has a three year condensed delivery model. UNB also offers an LPN to BN Pathway and a Learn Where You Live option for licensed practical nurses.

The Bachelor of Nursing Accelerated Program (BNAP) runs only at the Moncton site. It is for people who already have university credits. Its deadline is November 15 for the next September.

The High School to Accelerated BN Pathway

High school students can also enter the accelerated route. In the first year you take 46 university credits over fall, winter and summer. Fall and winter are in person in Fredericton. Summer is online. Then you move to Moncton for the accelerated degree. UNB calls the whole route a 3 year accelerated program.

Year one includes five leadership courses, the five courses you need for BNAP, and electives. Finishing the leadership courses earns a UNB Certificate in Leadership Studies. For New Brunswick students the entry rule is 70% in Biology 120, Chemistry 122 and English 122, and 75% across those and Grade 11 math.

Two pages disagree on accelerated entry

UNB's admission requirements page says the accelerated program is for people with a degree or 30 credit hours or more. The accelerated program page says you need at least 46 university credit hours with a 3.0 GPA (B or 70%).

The 46 credit rule matches the high school pathway, which gives you 46 credits in year one. Ask UNB which rule applies before you plan around it.

Courses, clinical work and progression

The four year degree needs at least 126 credit hours. That is 91 nursing credits, 26 credits of required courses in other faculties and 9 open electives. First year mixes nursing courses with biology and writing.

Clinical work happens in health agencies, and you may need to travel. UNB says placements can include evenings, nights and weekends. You need at least a C or CR in each nursing course. A GPA below 2.0 means probation, and below 1.7 means you must leave the program.

No co-op stream

UNB's nursing calendar describes clinical practice, not a co-op stream. Hands on learning is built into the degree.

Graduates are eligible to write the NCLEX-RN, the licensing exam for registered nurses.

Entrance scholarships

UNB guarantees a scholarship to high school students with a scholarship average of 80% or more. Its awards range from $500 to $100,000.

The scholarship application opens September 1 and closes March 1. UNB says all scholarships go out by April 30. The page does not list a grid of amounts by average, so ask UNB for details.

English tests and accelerated course rules

If English is not your first language, UNB's nursing pathway page sets a TOEFL iBT score of 100, a paper TOEFL of 600, or an IELTS of 7.0. These are higher than many other programs, so book the test early and send your scores before the deadline.

For the accelerated program, you must finish the required university courses with at least a C in each and a combined GPA of 3.0. You can apply before they are done, but they must be complete by July 31 before the September start.

For parents

The 75% minimum is a floor. UNB does not post how many nursing applicants it admits, so help your child apply to a few other nursing programs too.

Watch two early dates: Casper and the February 15 deadline. Ontario students should note that UNB asks for Grade 11 Functions, not a Grade 12 math.
