UNB Fredericton vs Saint John Campuses
Choose the UNB campus from the degree outward. Fredericton and Saint John share some degree names, but the faculty, specialization structure and co-op rules can differ. Engineering may also require a later campus move. Once the academic route is clear, compare residence, dining, libraries, recreation and the local services you expect to use each week.

Make the campus decision in the right order
Start in UNB's undergraduate program finder and filter by campus. A broad label such as Arts, Business, Computer Science, Engineering, Nursing or Science does not prove that both campuses offer the same degree structure. Open the exact program result and confirm its location, credential, faculty and current calendar requirements.
Fredericton has campus-specific faculties and departments in Education, Forestry and Environmental Management, Kinesiology and Law. Saint John has its own faculties of Arts and Business, plus the Faculty of Science, Applied Science and Engineering. Nursing and Health Sciences appears on both campus lists, while the program finder places the Bachelor of Health and the listed Health Sciences pathways in Saint John.
Treat campus availability as a current-program check rather than a four-year guarantee. UNB's finder is the practical source for applying, while the undergraduate calendar governs degree requirements. Recheck both before accepting an offer, especially when a pathway begins on one campus and finishes on the other.
| Decision | Fredericton | Saint John |
|---|---|---|
| Academic structure | Separate faculties include Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Forestry and Environmental Management, Kinesiology and Law | Arts, Business, Nursing and Health Sciences, and Science, Applied Science and Engineering are campus faculties |
| Computer Science | Bachelor of Computer Science in the Faculty of Computer Science | Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in SASE |
| Engineering | Common first year and the completion campus for most listed disciplines | Common first year; Environmental Engineering is the listed full-degree exception completed in Saint John |
| Campus-specific examples | Forestry, Kinesiology, Law and Leadership Studies appear in the Fredericton program list | Bachelor of Health, Applied Coastal Ecology and the listed Health Sciences pathways appear in Saint John |

The same subject label can lead to a different route
Computer Science is a clear example. The program finder lists a Bachelor of Computer Science through Fredericton's Faculty of Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science through Saint John's SASE faculty. Compare the actual curriculum and options instead of assuming the two credentials are interchangeable.
Business is offered on both campuses, but UNB says Fredericton uses honours or concentrations while Saint John uses minors, majors or concentrations. The campus decision therefore affects the available academic structure even when both results say Bachelor of Business Administration.
Arts and Science also appear on both campuses with campus-specific subjects. If a planned major matters, verify that exact major on the finder. Do not use the presence of a general BA or BSc as proof that every subject can be completed on either campus.
Engineering students must plan beyond first year
UNB publishes a common engineering first year at Fredericton and Saint John. That makes either campus a possible starting point, but it does not make every discipline a complete degree at both campuses.
The current Saint John undergraduate calendar says Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical and Software Engineering students may complete their second year in Saint John before moving to Fredericton. Geological and Geodesy and Geomatics students can complete approximately one quarter of their degree requirements in Saint John, then require six or more terms in Fredericton. Environmental Engineering is completed entirely in Saint John.
UNB's common-first-year page gives a conflicting year-two summary: it omits Computer Engineering and labels Software Engineering as Fredericton-only. Use the current calendar and confirm the plan with Engineering before registration. The stable completion rule across the reviewed sources is that every listed discipline except Environmental Engineering finishes in Fredericton, so most Saint John starters must budget and plan for a later campus move.
- Choose a likely discipline before choosing the starting campus.
- Check which year a move would occur and how it affects housing plans.
- Reconfirm the discipline pathway in the current undergraduate calendar before accepting an offer.
Compare residence by living format, not campus count
Fredericton's traditional residence listings include single and double rooms, building-specific bathroom arrangements and generally required meal plans. Current Neill House pages conflict: the traditional listing labels its meal plan required, while the 2026–27 fees page says no meal plan is required. Verify the assigned building and contract rather than applying one rule to every traditional room.
Elizabeth Parr-Johnston is for graduate students or undergraduates in third year or later; its suites have private bedrooms with shared washroom, kitchen and living areas, and the meal plan is optional.
Saint John lists three residence houses: Barry and Flora Beckett, Sir James Dunn and Dr. Colin B. Mackay. UNB says the buildings connect to the rest of campus through tunnels and pedways. Its residence dining page describes an all-you-care-to-eat plan, with dining cash usable at listed retail locations.
Do not compare the campuses using UNB's headline residence count. Live UNB pages disagree about the Fredericton total. Compare the rooms you are eligible for, the bathroom and kitchen setup, meal-plan obligation, current price and application terms on the campus residence pages.
Libraries and recreation work differently on each campus
Fredericton has several subject-oriented library locations. UNB identifies Harriet Irving as its largest Fredericton library, the I.U.C. Library for Science and Forestry and Environmental Management, and Head Hall Library for Engineering and Computer Science. Saint John's library is the Hans W. Klohn Commons.
Students may use any UNB library. The shared catalogue supports requests for pickup at a selected library, and the libraries offer study spaces, group-room booking, research help and online resources. Check live hours for the location you expect to use; hours are operational and can change by term or date.
Athletics also has separate campus identities. Fredericton's REDS compete in U SPORTS, while the Saint John Seawolves compete in the CCAA. UNB lists varsity, club and recreation opportunities on both campuses, so compare the sport and participation level you want rather than treating athletics as a single university-wide offering.

Map a normal week before choosing
Both campus service lists include academic support, financial aid, international-student support, accessibility and wellness resources. The offices are campus-specific. Fredericton lists separate counselling and Student Health Centre links; Saint John groups counselling, its Health Centre and Campus Ministry under Student Wellness.
Build a sample week with the current campus map, likely teaching buildings, residence or off-campus housing, library, recreation facility and the campus-specific support office you may use. Check the municipal transit provider for the address you are considering. If the program changes campuses, plan for relocation and verify current intercity transportation independently.
If your degree requires a later campus move, repeat the housing and travel check for that year. A convenient first-year setup in Saint John does not remove the practical cost of relocating to Fredericton for a discipline completed there.
