Queen's University scholarships and financial aid
A full Queen's funding plan can mix several kinds of aid. It can include an automatic entrance scholarship. It can include an application-based admission award. It can include a need-based bursary. It can include OSAP (Ontario's student grants and loans) or another government program. It can include external scholarships. Later, it can include work-study or general-bursary support. These routes do not share one application or deadline.
Principal's Scholarship

This is a one-year automatic award. It is for students in the top 3% of the competitive admission average within each first-entry program.
Chancellor's Scholarship
$48,000
This award is $12,000 annually over four years. There are 50 available. A high-school nomination is required. It is renewable with a 3.5 GPA (grade point average) in a full course load.

Automatic scholarships
Apply for admission. Queen's assesses eligible applicants using the grades available with the offer. Queen's can reassess accepted students after final grades arrive.
Financial Aid and Awards Profile
After applying, use SOLUS to submit the shared profile. This profile is for admission bursaries, Commitment Bursaries, Major Access Awards, Promise Scholars, and many donor-funded awards.
Major Admission Awards
Fill out the separate SOLUS application. Check if you need a school nomination. The award application is one submission. The program supplementary essay is a different submission.
Government student aid
Apply separately for OSAP or the student's home-province program. Queen's need-based aid can expect applicants to pursue government funding first.

Need-based admission bursaries

For 2026–27, first-year admission bursaries reach up to $6,285 for Arts and Science, $6,300 for Health Sciences or Nursing, $6,760 for Engineering and Applied Science, and $8,240 for Commerce, assessed through the Financial Aid and Awards Profile in SOLUS. The Commitment Bursary provides $2,000–$5,000, renewable for three subsequent years, for students from underserved or underrepresented groups with demonstrated financial need.
The recommended February 15, 2026 profile date belongs to the prior entry cycle, although applications continue after that date.

Dean's International Awards

Renewable four-year awards for students paying international tuition: $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, or $25,000 per year in Arts and Science and in Engineering; $15,000, $20,000, or $25,000 in Commerce; and $10,000 or $15,000 in Health Sciences. Automatic and Major Admission Awards
The Principal's Scholarship is automatic and one year only. It is awarded to the top 3% of the competitive admission average for each first-entry program. Queen's does not publish a single guaranteed percentage. Grades available with the offer are used first. Accepted applicants can be reassessed after final grades arrive in July.
Major Admission Awards use a separate application. You must be an eligible Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person. Queen's considers academic strength, original thinking, leadership, and school or community involvement. Financial need applies to some awards. A 90%+ cumulative average is described as a competitive expectation, not an award guarantee. The flagship Chancellor's Scholarship is currently $48,000. It is paid as $12,000 annually over four years. There are 50 available. It requires a high-school nomination. It renews only while a 3.5 GPA is achieved in a full course load.
Queen's financial-aid checklist
- 1.Use the exact 2026–2027 fee row for the student's program and residency status; do not treat Arts tuition as a university-wide price.
- 2.Add residence or rent, food, books, transportation, health coverage, travel, winter clothing, and an emergency reserve to the published academic total.
- 3.Submit the admission application early enough to receive SOLUS access before any award deadline.
- 4.Complete both the Financial Aid and Awards Profile and any separate Major Admission Award application that applies.
- 5.Keep automatic scholarships, need-based bursaries, government aid, work study, and external awards as separate lines in the funding plan.
Admission bursaries and the Financial Aid and Awards Profile
Eligible incoming Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and protected persons submit one Financial Aid and Awards Profile in SOLUS. Queen's uses it for the Admission Bursary, Commitment Bursary, Major Access Awards, Promise Scholars, and many donor-funded opportunities. You should also apply for government student aid. Anticipated public funding is part of the need assessment.
Current first-year admission-bursary maximums are $6,285 for Arts and Science, $6,300 for Health Sciences or Nursing, $6,760 for Engineering, and $8,240 for Commerce. The current Commitment Bursary provides $2,000 to $5,000. It can renew for three more years. This is for eligible students from underserved or underrepresented groups who demonstrate financial need.
OSAP and current-student bursaries
OSAP is not part of Queen's institutional aid. Undergraduate students should not enter Queen's-administered scholarships, awards, or bursaries again on the OSAP application. Queen's reports them directly. You still need to report external post-secondary awards.
After enrolment, the General Bursary can support eligible students with assessed need. Queen's currently expects most Canadian and U.S. applicants to qualify for at least $5,000 of government aid for two terms or $7,000 for three terms. International student scholarships
International applicants are considered automatically for the Principal's Scholarship and other eligible awards. The Dean's International Award program currently offers awards each year that can renew. They are $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, or $25,000. They go to eligible international-fee students. These students must be entering Arts and Science, Engineering, Commerce, or Health Sciences.
These awards do not make every program affordable on their own. Compare the international academic totals above with Queen's residence and meal-plan costs and keep a separate travel, permit, insurance, and emergency budget.

Queen's doesn't promise an award for each percentage band
Queen's automatic Principal's Scholarship is currently $7,000 for one year. It goes to students in the top 3% of the competitive admission average in each first-entry undergraduate program. Queen's doesn't publish one fixed 90%, 95% or 97% ladder that guarantees this award across all programs. A strong average is useful academic evidence, but it doesn't tell you where you stand within a particular program's applicant group.
Queen's calculates an awards average using the subjects required for admission, including Grade 12 marks available when you're admitted. Its automatic-awards page also describes cases where Grade 11 subjects are used when the corresponding Grade 12 mark isn't available. Your self-selected best six can differ from that calculation. Keep the offer's exact award name and avoid presenting a calculated percentage as a guaranteed $7,000 award.
Apply for major awards before waiting for an offer
The 2027-28 Major Admission Awards application is due in SOLUS on December 8, 2026. Queen's recommends applying through OUAC by November 20 to allow access to SOLUS, saying credentials normally take four to six business days. That early admission application is a planning step for scholarships; it shouldn't be mistaken for every program's final admission deadline. The separate scholarship application still has to be submitted.
Queen's says one MAA application considers you for the major awards for which you're eligible. Review each award's citizenship, geography, program and financial-need conditions first. The practice application contains the questions used in the online application and is available through the official forms page. Use it to plan your own answers. Receiving an early admission offer doesn't remove you from MAA consideration, and scholarship outcomes can come later.
Chancellor's requires a school nomination
The Chancellor's Scholarship is $48,000 in total, paid as $12,000 a year for four years, with 50 listed awards. You need a high-school nomination and an MAA application. The nomination limit depends on graduating class size: one for fewer than 250 graduates, up to two for 250 to 499 and up to three for 500 or more. Ask your guidance office about its own selection timetable, which can be earlier than Queen's deadline.
You provide the high-school official's contact details in SOLUS. After you submit, Queen's emails the official for the electronic form. Follow up to ensure the official identifies you as the selected nominee; naming a referee isn't itself confirmation of nomination. Queen's permits gap-year nominations from the prior full-time high school and specified Quebec high-school or CEGEP nominations. Financial-need awards need the additional profile
The Bank of Montreal Award lists $40,000 to $72,000 depending on program. Several other major awards also combine academic achievement, leadership and financial need. Queen's requires a Financial Aid and Awards Profile for the specified need-based awards. Filling out the MAA alone doesn't replace the profile where the award row says it's required. Make a checklist with both submissions and any requested documents.
Admission bursaries are another route and shouldn't be reduced to the automatic merit calculation. The official bursary page explains the profile and how Queen's reviews unmet need. Compare the program-specific award value with your costs rather than assuming every award in the MAA list has the same cash amount. The university reserves the right to revise values, so your award notice is the record to keep for financial planning.
Renewal and award combination rules
The Principal's Scholarship is non-renewable. Chancellor's is renewable for three subsequent years if you earn a GPA of at least 3.5 in a full course load each year. Other named awards have their own conditions; some require continued financial need, a different GPA in the first year or continued leadership involvement. Apply the conditions of the award actually offered to you rather than one general Queen's renewal rule.
Queen's says Major Admission Award recipients aren't eligible for other merit-based scholarships. If a major award replaces an automatic award, don't add both amounts to your annual total. Need-based bursaries can have different combination and deferral rules. The MAA page says merit scholarships can follow an approved admission deferral, while awards with a financial-need criterion can't be deferred. Ask Student Awards before treating a gap year as an automatic continuation of every component.
Documents, decisions and a Kingston budget
Ontario MAA applicants need a Credit Counselling Summary or Student Status Sheet covering earlier grades and current November grades. If the November marks aren't included, Queen's asks for an additional school-authenticated document. Non-Ontario applicants have a different list, including a transcript and all current-year courses. Don't substitute a generic final transcript checklist for those award-specific instructions.
Queen's normally posts MAA results in SOLUS in late February. Until then, build a base budget with confirmed funding and a separate possible-award scenario. The official tuition and residence pages identify the costs that scholarships are meant to help cover. OSAP and the later general bursary have separate applications. Keep those steps open even while you're waiting for a competitive award, and check the university's payment and reporting instructions before assuming a scholarship will settle a particular fee invoice.

Entrance scholarship questions
Does Queen's promise $7,000 to everyone above 95%?
No. The current automatic Admission Scholarship is based on being in the top 3% of applicants to the particular program, not a universal 95% line. Queen's evaluates that program-relative ranking. A calculator can help check course averages, but cannot know the final applicant distribution or promise selection.
Can I apply for Chancellor's without my school's nomination?
The Chancellor's Scholarship requires the school nomination within Queen's published quota. Confirm the local selection process with your counsellor before the university deadline. A completed Major Admission Award application is a separate student step, and a school may set an earlier internal date to choose its nominee.
Why should I apply for admission before November 20?
Queen's recommends that date so the applicant has time to receive SOLUS access before the December 8, 2026 Major Admission Award deadline. Access can take several business days. Waiting until the award deadline to start the admission application risks leaving no time to complete the separate scholarship application.
What maintains a renewable Chancellor award?
The published award terms require the relevant full course load and a 3.5 GPA for renewal. Save the offer and annual renewal instructions, and ask Student Awards before changing your registration. A successful high-school application establishes the initial award; it does not remove the later academic and enrolment conditions.
