Jean Royce Hall at Queen's: Rooms & Fees

Jean Royce may suit a student who values an on-site dining hall, nearby waterfront paths, access to the Faculty of Education and Education Library, and a residence community on West Campus. Queen's describes 605 residents and 16 Dons across the complex's 12 named houses.

The largest practical distinction is location. Jean Royce is on West Campus rather than Main Campus. Queen's says a nearby bus stop provides access to Main Campus and the rest of Kingston and describes Main Campus as within walking distance. Students should still map the trip to their likely classes and evening commitments instead of treating either statement as a promised travel time.

The building page lists stair access. If you need an elevator or an accessible route, contact Residence Admissions about the specific house and room before selecting. Use the residence accommodation process for disability or health-related functional needs; an accommodation request does not itself guarantee a residence space.

Jean Royce lists Single and Double rooms, both with communal washrooms. Queen's 2026–27 building page shows total academic-year charges of $18,795.80 for a Single and $17,618.80 for a Double. The university-wide fee schedule says those totals include the $805 deposit, room and mandatory meal plan, a $120 Residence Society fee, $150 for Good-to-Go and Flex Dollars, and $91.80 for residence insurance.

The residence period runs from September 5, 2026 until no later than 3 pm on the day after the student's last scheduled April 2027 exam. Fees are specific to 2026–27 and subject to change. Queen's also warns that photos and tours show samples: the size, appearance, storage, windows, and other details of an assigned room can vary.

The complex has indoor access to Jean Royce Dining Hall and a late-night cafe. Queen's notes that indoor access to the dining hall and Education Library applies to Phase 1 houses, so a student should check the specific house rather than assume every route is identical.

Rooms include an adjustable Twin XL bed, desk and chair, clothing storage, curtains, and garbage and recycling bins. Laundry is in the building. Students are told to bring Twin XL bedding, a fridge no larger than 3.5 cubic feet if wanted, and a wireless router plus ethernet cable. Internet is wired, and the building page encourages a router purchase.

Individual rooms and hallways are listed as carpet-free. Queen's accessibility inventory also identifies an accessibility room or suite and a Jean Royce single room with a visual alarm, but the inventory does not promise availability. Students should submit the appropriate accommodation form and let Residence Admissions match the approved functional need to available inventory.

For 2026–27, Queen's places part of its faculty-based Engineering Living Learning Community in Curran House and Douglas House on the third floor of Jean Royce Hall, using Single and Double rooms. The other Engineering LLC location is Smith House, where the listed room style is Single Plus. An applicant who prioritizes the Engineering LLC should therefore compare both the room configuration and campus location attached to each placement.

Jean Royce also hosts Queen's Pet-Friendly Unique Community. Queen's distinguishes Unique Communities from LLCs because they centre on a shared living preference and have less theme-specific programming. Selecting Pet-Friendly on the residence application limits the rooms visible during self-selection to that community. Students may apply with an approved cat, fish, or specified small caged animal, subject to the university's detailed conditions; students without a pet may also apply to live there.

LLC spaces are limited. A first-year applicant may apply to one LLC and must submit a brief written response explaining their interest and fit. Queen's says accepted students are contacted at their Queen's email at the end of June. For 2026–27, LLC and Unique Community self-selection ran before general self-selection.

A residence guarantee covers a bed space, not Jean Royce Hall or a particular room type. Self-selection times are assigned by lottery, and later times see less inventory. Build a ranked backup list before the assigned time.

For Jean Royce, compare Single versus Double, communal washrooms, West Campus travel, stair access, the house-level location, and whether an LLC or Unique Community restricts the rooms you can see. Review the official floor plan and 3D room examples, while remembering that they do not guarantee the dimensions or appearance of the assigned room. Once a student clicks Finalize Selection, Queen's says the choice is locked.
