Queen's Living Learning Communities

Queen's describes LLCs as floors or clusters where students with similar interests or values live together and take part in programming connected to the community theme. Current examples include faculty or staff meet-and-greets, themed events led by an LLC Don, monthly leadership skill-building workshops, and legacy projects in the Queen's or Kingston community.

Unique Communities have a different purpose. Queen's says they have less specific programming and instead bring together students who want a particular living environment. The current options are Study Floor, Woman Identified, Alcohol and Cannabis Not Preferred, and Pet-Friendly. A student seeking quiet hours or a substance-free environment should therefore evaluate the Unique Communities rather than assume every preference is an LLC.

An LLC can narrow the building and room styles available. Apply because the theme and programming matter enough to accept those constraints. If location, washroom style, accessibility, price, or a particular room type matters more, compare those factors before committing to the LLC application.

These locations apply to 2026–27. Queen's says its communities and locations can change each year; later applicants should check the new cycle before choosing a building.

Engineering is a faculty-based LLC, separate from Women in STEM. For 2026–27, its rooms are split between Jean Royce Hall on West Campus (Single and Double) and Smith House on Main Campus (Single Plus). Queen's pages conflict about Women in STEM: the LLC overview describes an all-women LLC in a mixed-gender building, while the 2026–27 application page calls the Leonard Hall fourth floor mixed gender. Confirm the arrangement with Residence Admissions before choosing it.

The LLC application is optional. During the first-year residence application, a student may apply to one LLC. Queen's asks for a brief written response explaining why the student wants to join and what makes them an ideal participant. The university suggests using relevant traits, activities, interests, awards, or volunteer and work experience as evidence.

Spaces are limited, and Queen's says it selects students based on their written responses. Applicants are contacted through their Queen's email at the end of June. For 2026–27, students selected for an LLC and those who applied to a Unique Community self-selected on July 13–14, before general first-year selection on July 22–24.

Applying to residence is separate from applying to Queen's academically. The 2026–27 residence application opened March 5, 2026, and the application plus $805 deposit had to be received by June 1 at 4 pm ET. Those dates should not be reused for a later intake until Queen's publishes that cycle's schedule.

A preferred roommate cannot automatically follow you into an LLC. If you are accepted and your friend is not, Queen's says you cannot form a roommate group unless you withdraw from the LLC. Groups normally select multi-occupancy rooms. General applicants cannot form a Single Plus roommate group. Queen's pages disagree about the accommodation exception: the first-year application FAQ permits a group when both students have approved Single Plus accommodations, while the accommodation FAQ prohibits it. Confirm the current rule with Residence Admissions before relying on that exception.

An approved residence accommodation and an LLC may be compatible, depending on the location and room style required. Queen's warns that not every LLC has rooms that can meet every approved need. A student may apply to the LLC and submit the relevant accommodation form, but Residence Admissions may ask the student to choose if the community lacks the approved room configuration.

A health or non-health accommodation request should go through the formal residence process. Queen's states that requesting or receiving approval for an accommodation does not itself guarantee a residence space.

Start with the community itself: do you want residence programming and peers organized around Engineering? Then compare the two 2026–27 placements. Jean Royce offers Single or Double rooms in Curran and Douglas Houses on West Campus, with communal washrooms, stair access, and Jean Royce Dining Hall in the complex. Smith House offers Single Plus rooms on Main Campus; the residence fee category is higher than Single or Double for 2026–27.

Acceptance to the Engineering LLC is not an engineering admission advantage, an academic guarantee, or a promise of a particular room. The official residence sources describe a living community and its selection process. They do not state that participation changes admission, grades, internships, or degree progression.

Keep backup choices. Queen's says no LLC operates in every building, room styles vary by community, and LLC locations may change. During self-selection, read the portal's current location and room attributes before finalizing; once finalized, the selection is locked.
