Courses you need

Trent's general rule for Ontario students is the OSSD plus six Grade 12 4U or 4M courses, including the program prerequisites. ENG4U must be at least 60%. For Computer Science, Trent's Ontario requirements page adds a 4U math for the B.Sc.

Trent does not name which 4U math. MHF4U, MCV4U and MDM4U are all 4U math courses. If you are unsure which one to take, MHF4U is the safer pick, because Trent's Software Engineering route and its Data Science degree both name MHF4U.

The other four courses can be any 4U or 4M courses. Use them to lift your average. Plan them with our high school course planner.

The average you need

Trent publishes a minimum, not a past range. The regular Computer Science program needs a minimum 70% overall final average. The co-op stream needs a minimum 80% average. Trent does not publish the average of students it admitted to computer science.

Trent says an offer made while you are still in high school is conditional. You must still meet the minimum for your program when your final grades arrive.

Work out your number with our Top 6 average calculator. If you are near 80%, the co-op code is worth adding to your OUAC list. If you are near 70%, protect your English and math marks first.

No essay, portfolio or interview

Neither Trent's program page nor its Ontario requirements page lists a supplementary form, essay, interview or portfolio for Computer Science. Your grades decide the offer.

That also means there is nothing extra to submit for the co-op code. The co-op decision at entry rests on the 80% average.

What first year looks like

First year starts with COIS 1010H The Digital World and COIS 1020H Programming for Computing Systems. COIS 1400H Introduction to Data Science teaches Python. The department says students with some programming experience may take both COIS 1010H and 1020H in the fall term.

The co-op schedule shows a fuller first year. It adds COIS 2240H Software Design and Modelling and COIS 2430H Web Development I in winter. Co-op students then take a summer term with COIS 2020H Data Structures and Algorithms and COIS 3400H Database Management Systems. Math starts in year one, with MATH 1110H or 1005H recommended in fall and MATH 1350H in winter.

Trent's program page lists courses such as Web Application Development, Computer Networks, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Security and Data Mining. The department lists three program types: single-major Honours, joint-major Honours and a single-major General program.

Specializations

Honours students can add a Specialization in Data Analytics, Software Engineering or Theoretical Computer Science. The department says you can pursue more than one.

The pages do not agree on one number. The program page says the Software Engineering specialization needs 9.0 extra credits. The department's specializations page says 9.5 credits. Confirm with the department before you plan your upper years.

Data Analytics needs 4.0 COIS credits, including COIS 1400H, 3510H, 4400H and 4550H, on both pages.

Co-op and work terms

Computer Science has a paid co-op stream in Peterborough, under OUAC code RZK. The program page says it gives you 12 months of work experience. Only the B.Sc. is open for co-op.

The department's schedule has eight study terms and three work terms. Work term 1 is the fall of year 2. Work term 2 follows in the winter of year 2. Work term 3 is the summer of year 3.

To stay in co-op you need at least 75% in COIS courses and a 70% cumulative average. The department says it cannot guarantee a placement for every student. Co-op students pay an administrative fee for each work term. The page does not list the amount.

The program page also lists a third-year internship worth 80-120 hours of on-the-job training, and a fourth-year capstone with a real business client.

Tuition for 2026-27

Trent charges computer science students more than most arts and science programs. For a new Ontario student in Peterborough starting in Fall 2026, the computer science row (2023 and later cohort) shows $10,293.26 in total fees. That is $8,171.04 in tuition and $2,122.22 in ancillary and levy fees.

Trent splits it into a fall payment of $5,568.05 and a winter payment of $4,725.21. Trent's dates page says Fall 2027 fees will be posted by summer 2027.

Residence, meals, books and co-op work term fees are extra. This fee page covers Peterborough only, not Durham GTA.

Entrance scholarships

Trent gives renewable entrance scholarships to Canadian high school students with an 80% average or higher. No application is needed. At 95% or more, the total is $18,118, with full first-year tuition of $6,118 plus $4,000 a year for three years.

At 90 to 94.9%, the total is $12,000 ($3,000 a year for four years). At 85 to 89.9%, it is $8,000. At 80 to 84.9%, it is $6,000. To renew, you need at least 80% in a full course load.

Students entering with 80% or more can also apply for a Prestigious Scholarship by March 21, 2027.

How it compares with other Trent options

Software Engineering is a separate entry under code RZH. It asks for an 80% average, ENG4U, MHF4U and one of MCV4U or MDM4U. Trent's Data Science B.Sc. asks for 75% with ENG4U, MHF4U and MCV4U or MDM4U.

Computing Systems is a B.A. option at 70%, with no 4U math listed on Trent's Ontario page. Artificial Intelligence asks for 70%, or 80% for its co-op, and any 4U math.

If your math marks are your strength and you are above 80%, Software Engineering or the computer science co-op code may fit. If you are near 70%, the regular RSC or RCM code is the main route.

For parents

The bar is clear. Your child needs 70% overall, 60% in ENG4U and a 4U math. Co-op needs 80%.

Computer science fees are higher than Trent's general rate. Plan for about $10,293 in 2026-27 fees before housing. An 80% average also brings an automatic entrance scholarship of at least $6,000 over four years, if it is renewed.
