MacEwan University Computer Science (BSc) admission requirements: ELA 30-1, Math 30-1, two sciences, 65% minimum

MacEwan's Bachelor of Science asks for ELA 30-1, Mathematics 30-1, two of Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Mathematics 31, Physics 30 or Computing Science, Advanced Career and Technology Studies (5 credits), and one subject from Group A, B, C or D.

Some BSc majors add their own courses, such as Biology 30 and Chemistry 30 for Biological Sciences or Psychology. Computer Science is not on that list. It follows the general BSc rules.

If you study outside Alberta, MacEwan says the Registrar assesses your preparedness on your own curriculum, with a program-specific subject at the Grade 12 level. MacEwan does not list Ontario course codes on this page, so ask the Registrar which of your courses match. Plan your courses with our high school course planner.

MacEwan's minimum is a 65% overall average, with no course grade below 50%. The BSc is competitive. MacEwan's competitive range for regular admission was the high 60s to the high 70s in both 2025/26 and 2026/27.

MacEwan says this competitive average can change as applications come in. It depends on the grades of other students applying for the same term. MacEwan does not publish a separate range for the Computer Science major.

MacEwan's BSc requirements list no essay, portfolio, interview or supplementary form. Beyond grades, you must show English language proficiency.

Applicants with two required-to-withdraw records in the past five years are not considered for three years. That rule is for students with past university or college records.

MacEwan opens fall applications on October 1. The Bachelor of Science, Computer Science listing has a June 30 fall deadline and a November 30 winter deadline. There is no spring or summer intake. International applicants must apply by May 1 for fall unless an earlier date is listed.

Apply by March 1 if you want entrance scholarships. That is MacEwan's fall scholarship deadline. The application fee is $110, and new domestic students pay a $400 admission confirmation deposit that goes toward tuition.

MacEwan's dates page lists Bachelor of Science, Computer Science as its own application choice. The 2027-2028 calendar adds a rule for declaring the major: you need to have passed MATH 114 and be taking or have finished CMPT 200. The declaration deadline is January 15, and students hear by February 1.

The two pages read differently. One lets you pick Computer Science when you apply. The other sets course conditions to declare it. Ask Arts and Science Academic Advising how the rule applies to students who choose Computer Science on their application.

All BSc students must declare a major and minor, or another approved structure, by the time they finish 45 credits.

The calendar's student plan for year 1 is CMPT 101 Introduction to Computing I, CMPT 103 Introduction to Computing II, MATH 114, MATH 120, ENGL 102 and 15 credits of breadth courses. Year 2 adds CMPT 200 Data Structures and Algorithms, CMPT 201 Practical Programming Methodology and STAT 151.

The major is 42 to 60 credits, with at least 36 at the senior level, inside a 120 credit degree. You also complete a minor, two minors or a second science major. You can stay general or pick a stream: Databases and Interactive Visualization, System and Information Security, or Gaming.

MacEwan lists Computer Science as a major and minor, but not as an Honours program. The department says students work with community partners on real problems starting in first year.

The 2027-2028 calendar does not list a co-op stream for Computer Science. Instead, the final-year requirement is CMPT 496 Final Project or CMPT 497 Computer Science Internship.

CMPT 497 is work-integrated learning in industry, with a minimum of 90 contact hours. It needs at least a C- in CMPT 395 and department consent. You can count at most 3 credits from CMPT 496 or CMPT 497.

MacEwan's calendar lists an estimated 2027/28 Bachelor of Science rate of $250 per credit for Canadian students. The rate still needs Board of Governors approval.

Our estimate for a full year of 30 credits is $7,500 in tuition. MacEwan's estimated mandatory term fees add $139.50 per fall or winter term: a $10.00 medical clinic fee, $7.15 mental health fee, $18.35 registrarial fee and $104.00 sport and wellness fee. The SAMU membership fee is $13.50 per credit, up to $202.50 per term.

That puts our estimate near $8,184 for the year before books, other SAMU fees, housing and food. This is our estimate from MacEwan's posted rates, not a MacEwan figure.

MacEwan's Chancellor's Scholarship Series is automatic for Canadian students entering a degree from high school. You must apply by March 1 for fall. The tiers are 95 to 100% (Chancellor's), 90 to 94.99% (President's), 85 to 89.99% (Provost's) and 80 to 84.99% (Dean's).

The main page does not list dollar amounts. Fall awards are paid in two parts, and you need 12 credits in each term. The Chancellor's Scholarship renews in years 2 to 4 if you keep the required GPA and course load.

MacEwan's floor is 65%, but recent BSc ranges reach the high 70s. Aim higher than the minimum.

Tuition is set per credit, $250 for the BSc in 2027/28 (estimated). Apply by March 1 so an 80% or higher average is considered for an entrance scholarship.
