Course requirements

MacEwan's BCom page lists Alberta courses: ELA 30-1, Mathematics 30-1 or Mathematics 30-2, and three subjects from Group A, B, C or D. That makes five courses. Group A is humanities, Group B is fine arts, Group C is sciences and Group D is options.

MacEwan's high school subjects page lists the Ontario match for each Alberta course. English Language Arts 30-1 matches ENG4U, EAE4U or ETS4U. Mathematics 30-1 matches Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Mathematics 30-2 matches Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U). Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) is a Group C science, so it can count as one of your three other subjects.

You may use at most two Group B subjects, from different disciplines, and at most one Group D subject. MacEwan also encourages a broad range of subjects. Map your timetable with our course planner.

The average you need

MacEwan sets a minimum overall average of 65%, with no course grade lower than 50%. But it says the BCom is competitive. That means you need a higher average than the minimum to be admitted.

MacEwan publishes its competitive range. For regular and mature admission, it lists the high 60s to mid 70s for both 2025/26 and 2026/27. MacEwan says this range may change as applications come in, because it depends on the grades of others applying for the same term.

For competitive programs, MacEwan says high school courses must be finished by June 30 to count for fall. Check where you stand with our Top 6 average calculator, then focus on your five admission courses.

No essay or interview

The BCom requirements page lists grades and English language proficiency. There is no supplementary application, essay, interview or portfolio for admission.

The co-op stream is different. You apply after you start, and MacEwan looks at your work experience. More on that below.

Dates for Fall 2027

MacEwan's requirements page says it is for Fall 2027 or Winter 2028 intake. Fall applications open October 1. The dates page lists June 30 as the BCom deadline for fall and November 30 for winter. That table isn't labelled with a year, so confirm the date when you apply.

Documents for programs closing June 30 are due July 15. Final documents for fall are due August 1. Apply by March 1 if you want to be considered for an entrance scholarship.

The application fee for 2026/27 is $110. Keep every date in one place with our Canadian university deadlines page.

What you study

In the first two years, MacEwan says you learn business basics: macroeconomics, marketing fundamentals, introductory accounting, analysis and argument and financial math. In years three and four you specialize through a major.

You can finish a major and a minor, a double major, or a major and a double minor. You also take 6 credits of business electives, 15 to 21 credits of non-business electives and 9 to 15 credits of open electives. The BCom is 120 credits, and there are full-time and part-time options.

Majors named on MacEwan's co-op page include accounting, human resources management, international business, management, marketing, legal studies in business and supply chain management.

Co-op is optional and competitive

MacEwan offers a co-op stream within each major. It is a quota stream, so admission is competitive and not guaranteed. All applicants need at least 650 hours of paid work experience in the past three years. The work doesn't have to be in business. Retail and hospitality jobs count.

Most majors can apply in their first semester. Accounting majors apply in year one or two, and co-op for accounting is significantly more competitive. Co-op students take four co-op courses on top of the 120 credits, and MacEwan charges $537 for each co-op course.

What counts as 650 hours? MacEwan gives examples: two shifts of 6 or more hours a week held steadily over the past 18 to 24 months, or two full-time summer jobs in the previous two years. MacEwan also looks at volunteer and extracurricular experience. If you want co-op, a steady part-time job in Grade 11 and 12 is good preparation.

Tuition for 2027-28

MacEwan charges per credit. Its calendar lists an estimated 2027/28 rate of $214 per credit for the Bachelor of Commerce, for Canadian students. The rate still needs approval from MacEwan's Board of Governors.

Our estimate, not a MacEwan figure: 120 credits over four years is about 30 credits a year. At $214, that is about $6,420 in tuition a year.

Fees are extra. The 2027/28 estimated fees include a $104.00 sport and wellness fee and a $18.35 registrarial service fee each fall or winter term. When you accept an offer, there is a $400 admission deposit for 2026/27, which goes toward tuition.

Scholarships

If you're offered admission, you're automatically considered for the Chancellor's Scholarship Series. Apply by March 1 for fall. Tiers are based on your admission average: Chancellor's at 95 to 100%, President's at 90 to 94.99%, Provost's at 85 to 89.99% and Dean's at 80 to 84.99%.

MacEwan's scholarship page doesn't show the dollar values. To keep the award you need at least 12 credits in each of fall and winter, and a 2.0 GPA after fall for the second half.

For parents

MacEwan publishes a competitive range. If your teen is in the high 60s to mid 70s, they're in range. Above that, they're in a strong spot. The 65% minimum alone won't secure a place.

Watch two dates. March 1 is the scholarship date, and June 30 is both the application deadline and the date courses must be done. See our MacEwan University guide for residence and campus details.

How the BCom compares with nearby options

MacEwan also runs a Business Management diploma with the same June 30 fall deadline. If you're weighing it against the BCom, ask MacEwan how diploma credits count toward a degree.

In Edmonton and Calgary, compare with our Alberta business guide and Calgary Commerce guide. The BCom itself carries Canadian Institute of Management accreditation, which MacEwan says meets the academic requirements for the C.I.M. designation.
