Course requirements

Ontario students need 4U English or French, Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) and Physics (SPH4U). McGill names Calculus and Vectors, so do not drop it. Advanced Functions is usually taken first, since it leads into Calculus and Vectors. Physics is also required, so plan both science and math in Grade 12.

McGill averages your best six Grade 12 courses at the 4U, DU or 4M level. At least four must be 4U or DU. Use our course planner to check your Grade 12 plan.

The average you need

McGill lists typical minimum admission ranges of low to high 90s for architecture. That range applies to both your Top 6 average and your math and science courses. It is one of the higher ranges on McGill's Ontario page.

McGill says these numbers are a guide only. They may not match the next cycle, and meeting them does not guarantee an offer. McGill does not publish an acceptance rate for architecture. Check your number with our Top 6 average calculator.

Portfolio and supplementary steps

McGill's Ontario requirements page lists no portfolio or essay for architecture. The architecture program page and the school's prospective student page also send applicants to the general admissions guide for requirements, and do not list a portfolio.

That makes McGill different from Waterloo, Carleton and TMU, which all ask for creative work. Since rules can change, check your McGill applicant portal after you apply for any extra request.

When offers come out

McGill says Ontario high school applicants to architecture can expect a decision between mid February and the end of May for September 2027 entry. Offers can come at any point in that window, so an early offer to a friend does not mean you were missed.

McGill grades are self reported by Ontario students at set times. McGill asks you to check its Applicant Portal and your email often. Any request for documents shows up there, with its own date. Missing one can stall your file.

Do you need French?

No. McGill teaches in English. Its documents page names only a few programs where French is essential for an internship, such as nursing, dietetics and the therapy programs. Architecture is not one of them.

Some French is still useful for daily life in Montreal. It is not part of the admission decision for architecture, and you do not need to send a French test.

How McGill compares with Ontario schools

Most Ontario architecture programs add a portfolio or interview. McGill's Ontario page does not. That means your grades carry almost all the weight. A student with a strong portfolio but an 88% average may have a better chance at a school that scores creative work.

McGill's required math is also stricter. It names Calculus and Vectors, while Waterloo and TMU accept Advanced Functions. If you are applying to several schools, take both maths and Physics so you keep every door open.

What the degree is

The Bachelor of Science in Architecture sits in McGill's Faculty of Engineering, at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture. McGill says the school has about 250 students. Students use 24 hour computer labs, a workshop and research spaces.

The school lists 126 credits for the degree, with separate course paths for students who come from CEGEP and those who do not. Current students also have a Sketching School and exchange options listed on the school's site.

Path to becoming an architect

McGill is clear that the B.Sc.(Arch.) is a non professional degree. To start toward a licence, students must also finish the Master of Architecture (Professional). McGill describes that master's as a 1.5 year program.

So plan for about five and a half years of university, or more, if you want to be a licensed architect through McGill.

Co-op and work experience

McGill's architecture admissions page lists no co-op stream for the B.Sc.(Arch.). Hands on learning comes through studios, the workshop and the Sketching School instead.

If paid work terms matter to you, compare Waterloo's co-op only BAS and TMU's five year co-op stream.

McGill's 2026-27 fee table for the B.Sc.(Arch.) lists tuition of $12,985.50 for Canadians from outside Quebec, or $16,015.79 with fees. International students pay $35,561.10 in tuition, or $39,551.39 with fees. Quebec residents pay a much lower rate.

McGill says tuition for new Canadian students will rise each year, and suggests planning for about 3% a year. The fee totals are estimates. Health and dental insurance is shown at 2025-26 rates and may change.

Scholarships

Every applicant is considered for a one year $3,000 entrance scholarship. Major Entrance Scholarships of $3,000, $5,000, $10,000 or $12,000 a year are renewable. They need a separate application, which opens October 1 on McGill's portal. Committees look at academic achievement and at outstanding leadership in school or community activities, so list your clubs, jobs and volunteer roles clearly.

The School of Architecture also considers every student for its own awards with no separate form. These include the Sheila Baillie Scholarships for incoming students and travel awards for exchanges. Most list a value that varies.
