Course requirements

Western asks Ontario students for the OSSD (the Ontario Secondary School Diploma) with at least six Grade 12 U or M courses, not counting co-op. For Kinesiology, English (ENG4U) and Biology (SBI4U) are required, with at least 70% in each.

Western recommends a Grade 12 U or M math and Grade 12 U Physics for biomechanics, research methods and statistics. If you're thinking about the BSc, it strongly recommends Grade 12 science courses, and you need Grade 12U Chemistry to take first-year Chemistry. Plan your courses with our course planner.

The high 80s guideline

Western's admission average guideline for Kinesiology is the high 80s, for Ontario high school students. Western says reaching the guideline doesn't guarantee admission. The first-year class is about 335 students.

Western reviews all your completed and in-progress Grade 11 U and M courses too. It doesn't publish a Kinesiology acceptance rate; our Western acceptance rate page explains what it does publish. Work out your average with our Top 6 average calculator.

From outside Ontario or the IB

Students from Alberta, British Columbia and the territories need Grade 12 English and Biology, with at least 70% in each. Western recommends any Grade 12 math and Grade 11 or 12 Physics, plus another Grade 12 math or science such as Calculus, Pre-Calculus or Chemistry.

IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma students need the full diploma, with TOK and the Extended Essay, six subjects (three at Higher Level), at least 27 points including the EE and TOK, and no mark below 4. Kinesiology needs IB Biology at HL or SL, and IB Chemistry is required for first-year Chemistry. Ontario IB students are assessed on their OSSD.

Beyond the average

Western says its typical first-year class enters with an average around 88%, and that it also looks for consistent performance and strength in the required courses for your program. It runs equitable and accessible admission pathways for students who haven't had the same access and supports.

If something outside your control affected your grades, Western's Special Consideration profile is due March 1, 2027. The Extraordinary Extracurricular Activities and Contributions to Citizenship profile has the same deadline.

First year and choosing a module

Every Kinesiology student takes a common first year: Social Foundations of Kinesiology, Functional Human Gross Anatomy, Psychology of Human Movement Science, Introduction to Psychomotor Behaviour and Introduction to Human Physiology. You choose your module before second year, so pick first-year electives that match its prerequisites.

With a 70% average and no mark below 60%, you're guaranteed to progress within Kinesiology, though limited-enrolment modules may need more. Most students choose the BA Honours Specialization. The BSc Honours Specialization admits 75 students a year and needs first-year biology, chemistry, calculus and physics.

Western's School of Kinesiology says professional programs such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and medicine don't favour the BSc over the BA, so it advises choosing the program that fits your interests.

BA, BSc or Clinical Kinesiology

Western offers Kinesiology as a BA or a BSc, both under the same OUAC code. Modules include Honours Specializations in Kinesiology (BA), Kinesiology (BSc) and Clinical Kinesiology, plus a Major in Kinesiology. Clinical Kinesiology teaches you to apply kinesiology in clinical and non-clinical settings.

Combined and concurrent options include Kinesiology (BA) with an Ivey HBA, a Kinesiology major with Rehabilitation Sciences, and a Kinesiology major with an Honours Specialization in Nutrition and Dietetics.

First-year courses include Social Foundations of Kinesiology and Psychology of Human Movement Science. Upper years add exercise physiology, research design, biomechanical analysis of human locomotion, Olympic and Paralympic issues and legal issues in kinesiology.

Internships and practicums

Western lists internships rather than a co-op stream for Kinesiology. After second year, with all required courses done and a cumulative average of 70% or more, you can take a 4, 8, 12 or 16 month internship. You must return afterwards for at least 3.5 credits. International students aren't eligible for internships at this time.

Fourth-year Honours students with a 70% average can take the Kinesiology Practicum: 75 hours a term with a community partner for 0.5 credit, pass or fail. Western says six kinesiology courses build in practicum experience, and it lists $9,856 for its paid Undergraduate Summer Research Internships.

Careers

Western points Kinesiology graduates toward coaching, sports management, strength training and wellness programming. Students can work as athletic trainers for varsity teams or with professionals at the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic on campus.

For further study, the School of Kinesiology also runs a course-based Master of Kinesiology (MKin) and a thesis-based master's program.

For parents

Only English and Biology are required, so a strong Biology mark matters. If your child might want the BSc, make sure Grade 12 Chemistry is on the timetable.

International students should know that Western's kinesiology internships and most practicums aren't open to them at this time. Clinical Kinesiology's practicum (KIN 4590) is the exception.
