Western Science admission requirements: English, Calculus and two more 4U courses, with a low to mid 80s guideline

Western's Faculty of Science admits first-year students to one BSc entry, OUAC code ES. You need Grade 12 English, Calculus and Vectors, and two more 4U math or science courses. Western's average guideline is the low to mid 80s. You try out subjects in first year. Then you apply to a module, such as Biology or Physics. Most science programs have no supplement.

How first year works in Western Science

You apply to Science as a whole, not to one subject. Western calls this a flexible first year. You take the first-year courses for the modules you think you want, plus electives. A module is a group of courses in one subject, and you need at least one to graduate.

Western lists seven program areas in Science: Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, and Statistical and Actuarial Sciences. Computer Science (code ECS) and Medical Sciences (code ESM) are separate entries with their own requirements.

There are four module types. An Honours Specialization is 9.0 or more credits and fits only in a four-year Honours degree. A Specialization is also 9.0 or more credits, in a four-year degree. A Major is 6.0 to 7.0 credits, and a Minor is 4.0 to 5.0 credits. You can combine them, for example an Honours Specialization with a Minor.

Course requirements

Ontario students need the OSSD with at least six Grade 12 U or M courses, not counting co-op. For Science, these must include English (ENG4U) and Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U). You also need two of Advanced Functions, Mathematics of Data Management, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science, and Computer Science. Western says you need at least 70% in each required course.

Pick your two extra courses with care. Western says you need Grade 12 Biology and Chemistry to take first-year Biology and Chemistry, and those are required for all Biology modules and some Chemistry modules. A student who skips SCH4U can still be admitted, but may have fewer choices in first year. Plan ahead with our course planner.

The average you need

Western's admission average guideline for Science is the low to mid 80s. Western says this range reflects last year's incoming class, that some students fall above and some below, and that no minimum grade guarantees admission. Western looks at your required courses, your highest Grade 12 grades and your overall Grade 11 performance.

Western does not publish an acceptance rate for Science. The program page lists a first-year class size of 550. Compare your marks with our Top 6 average calculator, and read our Western acceptance rate page for what Western does publish.

Getting into a module after first year

Your first-year marks decide which modules you can enter. Each module sets its own rules in the Academic Calendar. Biology is a good example because it is popular.

For the Honours Specialization in Biology, you need to finish first year with no failures. You also need at least 70% across 3.0 principal courses: Biology 1001A and 1002B, Chemistry 1301A/B and 1302A/B, plus one more course, with no mark below 60% in any of them. For the Major in Biology, the bar is lower: no failures and at least 60% in each of Biology 1001A and 1002B.

Both modules also need a physics half-course and a math course. If you don't finish them in first year, you must finish them by the end of second year. Look up your target modules in the calendar before you pick first-year courses.

Western Integrated Science (WISc)

WISc is a small program inside Science. Western says it takes about 60 students a year. You apply to Science (code ES) on OUAC and choose WISc as your subject of major interest. Then you complete a separate WISc supplemental application. You also need Grade 12 Chemistry (SCH4U).

The deadline is not settled on Western's pages. The deadlines page says early April 2027. The Ontario requirements page says April 2027, to be confirmed. The WISc page itself still shows the Fall 2026 cycle, with full consideration for forms in before April 6, 2026. Confirm the 2027 date with the WISc office before you plan around it.

Science Co-op

Co-op is optional. Western's Science Co-op Program offers paid, full-time work terms of 4 to 16 months, starting as early as the summer after second year. Western says graduation is normally delayed by one year, because you build at least 12 months of co-op work.

To apply, you need to be in a four-year degree, in Year 2 or 3, with a cumulative average of at least 60%. Western notes that most second-year job postings target Computer Science and Statistical and Actuarial Sciences students, so other students are more likely to land a role in third year. The program page lists a typical intern salary range of $31,121 to $74,690.

You don't pay tuition while on a work term, but there is a co-op fee. Western says the fee is the student's responsibility and is non-refundable.

Deadlines, fees and scholarships

Apply on OUAC by January 15, 2027 for equal consideration. The Special Consideration and Extraordinary Extracurricular profiles are due March 1, 2027. Ontario universities cannot require a response from a current Ontario high school student before June 1, 2027.

Western's 2026-27 fee schedule lists Year 1 Science tuition of $6,171.00 for Ontario students and $7,719.00 for other Canadians, or $8,222.46 and $9,770.46 with fees. International students pay $47,493.00 in tuition, or $50,492.46 in total. The schedule is marked draft and may change.

Admission scholarships are automatic. A final average of 92% or more earns $3,500, and 90% to 91.9% earns $2,500. Western also offers 250 Scholarships of Excellence worth $8,000. Consideration is guaranteed if your application and documents are in by March 1.

Science plus Ivey

Western's Science page lists a combined Honours Specialization in Science with the Ivey HBA. Western's degree page also names Science on its list of combined Ivey degrees. Ivey's route starts with AEO status from high school, or an application once you are at university. See our Ivey HBA guide for that path.

For parents

Western Science is a broad entry. That suits a student who likes science but has not picked a subject. The trade-off is that the real competition moves to first year, when module entry depends on university marks.

Make sure your child takes Grade 12 Biology and Chemistry if a life science or pre-health path is likely. Without them, some first-year courses are closed.
