Western Libraries: Weldon, Taylor and Study Spaces

Western has five libraries on its main campus: Weldon, Taylor, Business, Law and Music. You can study, pick up holds or get help at any of them, whatever your program. Weldon is the largest and busiest; Taylor, in the Natural Sciences Centre, is second. Each library uses three noise zones: conversation-friendly, quiet and silent. Your Western ONECard is your library card.

Compare the five main libraries

Pick by the kind of study you need, not only by your faculty. Weldon has the most seats and a whole silent floor. Taylor has the most bookable rooms on one floor. Business and Law are smaller but open to every Western student.

Weldon is being revitalized, and Western says the construction can affect services and space availability. Check the library's notices before planning a long session there.

Other library spaces and the affiliated colleges

Western Libraries also runs smaller spaces. The Map and Data Centre, on Weldon's Ground floor, seats about 80 and has two bookable rooms for up to eight people. The Archives and Research Collections Centre (ARCC) has its entrance and reading room on Weldon's main floor. The Education Resource Centre has quiet space for about 12 people.

Huron, King's and St. Peter's Seminary run their own libraries. King's Cardinal Carter Library lets you book study rooms, pods and tech, including laptops, for two hours at a time. Brescia's Beryl Ivey Library closed permanently on May 1, 2024, after Brescia integrated with Western; its collection moved into Western Libraries. You can borrow from any Western or affiliated college library and return items to any of them.

How to book a group study room

Current Western and affiliated college students can book Weldon's rooms with their Western ID. Rooms are for academic work tied to a Western course or program, and you can reserve up to two weeks ahead. Weldon, Taylor, Business and the Map and Data Centre all cap bookings at two hours a day.

Not every room is bookable. At Weldon, rooms with media equipment on the Ground, Mezzanine and Second floors are reservable. The group rooms on the third and fourth floors are first come, first served, and keys go back to the Info Desk before closing.

  • Book early for midterm and exam weeks, when two-hour slots go first.
  • Students registered with Accessible Education can borrow a key for one of seven individual rooms on Weldon's second floor, for three hours at a time.
  • Accessible Education runs the Access Lab in Weldon; ZoomText, Kurzweil 3000 and JAWS are on every library computer.

Borrowing, printing and library rules

Students borrow general-loan items for 120 days with unlimited renewals. Renewals stop if you owe more than $20 in fines. Printing and copying need a PaperCut account; scanning is free. Info Desks lend phone and laptop chargers, HDMI cables, headphones, calculators and travel adapters.

The libraries are open to the public, though some resources are for the university community only. You can't eat in the libraries, and during exams Western reminds students: if you move your feet, you lose your seat. Use Ask the Library chat or book a Research Help appointment when you're stuck on an assignment.

Where to check hours

Hours differ by library and change through the term, so use Western Libraries' live hours page. Weldon and Taylor extend their hours during exam periods. Western has published late closing times for past April exams, but check the current term before you plan an all-evening session.
