Western Meal Plan and Dining Halls
Western's residence meal plan is a declining balance on your ONECard, not a set number of meals. Dining halls charge by weight, so you pay only for what's on your plate, and residence students get 50% off there. For 2026-27, Plan 1 costs $8,300 and Plan 2 costs $7,700. In both, $4,050 is a non-refundable overhead fee; the food credit is what you actually spend.

What each 2026-27 plan contains
Meal plans are mandatory for first-year residents except in Bayfield and Lambton Hall. You choose your plan when you complete your residence application. Western recommends Plan 1 if you live in a traditional or hybrid building without in-suite cooking, and Plan 2 if you live in a suite-style building.
The overhead fee pays for running and maintaining the residence dining halls, including labour and equipment. It carries no food credit and isn't refundable. The food credit is refundable under the rules below.
| Part of the plan | Plan 1 | Plan 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Residence Dollars | $3,550 | $2,950 |
| Flex Dollars | $550 | $550 |
| Overhead fee (non-refundable) | $4,050 | $4,050 |
| Capital improvement fee | $150 | $150 |
| Total | $8,300 | $7,700 |
| Western recommends it for | Traditional and hybrid buildings | Suite-style buildings |
Residence Dollars and Flex Dollars work in different places
Residence Dollars get the discount. In residence dining halls, the price is reduced and tax-exempt because you've already paid the overhead fee. At other Hospitality Services eateries on campus you pay full retail price, though still without tax. Starbucks is excluded.
Flex Dollars reach further, but at normal prices. When your Residence Dollars run out, Western moves Flex Dollars across automatically in $50 steps. Online top-ups add Flex Dollars only, with a $10 minimum, through the Western Meal Plan Portal. The same portal shows your recent transactions.
| Balance | Where you can spend it | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Residence Dollars | Residence dining halls | Reduced, tax-exempt price (50% residence discount) |
| Residence Dollars | Hospitality Services eateries on campus, except Starbucks | Full retail price, tax-exempt |
| Flex Dollars | Campus vending machines, campus Starbucks, partner restaurants on and off campus | Full retail price; off-campus purchases add tax |
The eight dining halls and their hours
Western runs eight residence dining halls itself: Ontario, Saugeen-Maitland, Sydenham, Elgin, Perth, Delaware, Clare and Essex. You can eat at any of them, whichever building you live in. Hours vary, so the late-night options are the ones to know.
| Dining halls | Regular hours listed on September 29, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Ontario, Saugeen-Maitland, Sydenham | 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days, with a 9 to 11 p.m. snack bar |
| Delaware, Clare, Essex | 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday; to 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday |
| Elgin, Perth | 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., seven days |
- Bayfield and Lambton have no dining hall; Saugeen-Maitland's is about a five-minute walk.
- Alumni House has none; Western says Elgin and Sydenham are within a two-minute walk.
- London Hall has none; Essex's dining hall is less than a minute away.
Allergies, halal and kosher
If your allergy needs a specific building, submit a Residence Accessibility Request in myHousing with documentation, before the residence deadline. If you don't need a specific placement, self-identify during Residence Onboarding in late July. Western's registered dietitian then arranges a meeting with the dining team at move-in. Priority allergens are marked where you pay.
Halal proteins follow Halal Monitoring Authority guidelines. Western doesn't run a kosher kitchen, but it offers sealed, manufacturer-certified kosher meals to residence students and helps heat them safely.
What happens to money left at the end of first year
Unused food credit carries over into a Campus Meal Plan you can keep using in upper years. If you'd rather have the money back, request a refund in myHousing between April and May 15, 2027. Western deducts a $40 processing fee and credits the refund to your Student Center account, where it first pays any balance you owe.
Plans for students who don't live in residence
Commuters and upper-year students can buy a campus plan instead. These plans aren't available to students already on the residence meal plan.
| Plan | Cost | Saving at Hospitality Services eateries |
|---|---|---|
| Mustang Meal Plan | $525: $500 in tax-exempt dollars and $25 in Flex | 13% |
| Flex Meal Plan | Add as little as $50 to your ONECard | 5% |
