Western Student Center, OWL and Course Registration
Western uses a different tool at each step. As an applicant, you check your offer in the Choose Western Offer Portal and accept it on OUAC. After you activate your Western Identity, you register for courses and see your fee statement in Student Center. Your course sites live in OWL Brightspace. For 2026-27, Year 1 enrolment appointments started between June 22 and June 26.

Which Western tool does what
Mixing these up is the most common first-year mistake. Draft My Schedule only plans a timetable; it doesn't register you. OWL Brightspace is where instructors post course material, but it isn't where you add or drop courses.
| Task | Where | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Check your offer | Choose Western Offer Portal | The link comes in your offer email; if you applied through OUAC, you accept on OUAC |
| Activate your account | Western Identity | You need your Student Number and a Western Access Code, retrieved with your Student Number and OUAC number |
| Plan a timetable | Draft My Schedule | Usually available June 1; shows course constraints; doesn't register you |
| Register, drop and swap | Student Center | You need an enrolment appointment; Western emails you 2 to 3 days before it starts |
| See fees and pay | Student Center | Review your tuition fee statement there |
| Course sites and assignments | OWL Brightspace | Western's learning system; old OWL Sakai sites closed to most users in May 2026 |
| Residence and meal plan | myHousing Portal | Separate from course registration |
The 2026-27 first-year registration timeline
These are the 2026-27 dates Western published. Fall 2027 dates aren't out yet, so treat this as a guide to the shape of the summer rather than next year's calendar.
Since September 2024, undergraduate applicants don't get a Western email with their Western Identity. Email and other central services switch on at term activation, typically four to six weeks before term starts. Watch your personal email until then.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| June 1 (usual) | Draft My Schedule opens; first ONECard orders open for fall starts |
| June 22 to 26, 2026 | Year 1 enrolment appointments begin in Student Center |
| July 6 to 28, 2026 | Priority enrolment period; some courses stay limited to certain campuses or programs |
| July 29 to August 5, 2026 | Adjustment period; registration pauses briefly at the start and end |
| Mid-July to late August | Engineering students are auto-enrolled into their timetable |
| September 9, 2026 | Fall/Winter classes begin |
| September 17, 2026 | Last day to add or drop a Fall/Winter 24-week or Fall 12-week course with no transcript entry |
| November 30, 2026 | Last day to withdraw from a Fall 12-week course with a WDN grade |
Building a first-year course load
A full-time first year at Western is 5.0 credits numbered 1000 to 1999. They must cover at least four subjects, with no more than 2.0 credits in any one. Full-time students can take between 3.5 and 5.0 credits. You'll also need 2.0 essay credits before you graduate, though none are required in first year.
Western offers free, virtual 1-1 Course Advising, formerly Summer Academic Orientation, to new main-campus students outside Engineering. Engineering, Nursing and Music follow their own enrolment steps. Main-campus students can't take an affiliated college course that's also taught on main campus, and can take at most 1.0 course per session at an affiliated college.
- Build two or three timetable versions in Draft My Schedule before your appointment.
- Check each course's notes for priority or restriction constraints.
- Enrol as soon as your appointment opens; popular electives and good time slots fill quickly.
- At the end of first year, complete the Intent to Register in Student Center to move into your module or program.
Where to get help
Student Central is the registrar's one-stop service desk. It helps in person in Room 1120 of the Western Student Services Building, by chat or by email, and it's where you pick up your ONECard. Your faculty's academic counselling office handles course choices, degree rules and exceptions. Huron and King's students use their own college's counselling office.
Before dropping a course, check the Sessional Dates page. A drop by the add/drop deadline leaves no trace on your transcript; a later withdrawal shows WDN, and after the withdrawal deadline the grade is F.
